Rush's Second Birthday Party

Since Rush is a bit more reserved (at least at the moment) than his big sis, Cary and I wanted to have a blowout party for his second birthday. The idea was to let the kid shine and make sure he was the center of it all for a change. If you've spent any time with Rush in a car, you know that he loves to play the "spot the American flag game." Rush spots them like a hawk, and yells out a vowel-filled sound that somehow means "flag!" So, we went with a stars and stripes theme for the party. Cary had the inspired plan of getting a "bounce house" for the kids, and asked me to make a sprinkler out of pvc pipe (she had seen some cool variations on the internet).

The bounce house was a huge hit, even more so than I would have guessed. It wasn't easy to get a good photo because of the constant motion of all the kids, but you can certainly get a sense of Rush's enjoyment level from this shot.

The sprinkler I made was not the show-stopper we had hoped for. I think the holes I drilled were too large, and so it didn't have as much pressure as I would have liked. This photo probably make it look a bit more exciting than it actually was, but I still appreciate the kids paying some attention to the thing. Sprinkler 2.0 will be much cooler.

Rush is an absolute sucker for cookie cake, so he was really pumped to eat far too much of this awesome flag cake.
For his present, we got Rush a train set. Actually, most of the set is my own Brio train which my mom carefully saved and later gave to me to hang on to. It is really fun to have something from my own childhood be in Rush's life. He had so much fun playing with the train and configuring the track, we had to drag him screaming to bed! I didn't have to show him how the track works, he used his awesome puzzle skills to figure it out on his own. I'm excited to see how his creativity grows as he gets more comfortable building with it.
A great birthday for a great kid - can't believe it has been two years already!

Rush- Two Years Old

My little man is two years old. It really does seem like yesterday when I found out I had a 14 week baby growing inside of me! Both of our children mean a lot to me, clearly, and both mean something a bit different to me and the bigger picture.

When Winnie came along, it was on the heels of Andy and I having walked victoriously out of some marital problems. One of the meanings of her name is reconciliation. That is really sweet to me. Rush, clearly, was a surprise for us. When I found out I was pregnant, I was in the middle of feeding Winnie some baby food for lunch. I cried the entire time I was feeding her. That kind of reaction can happen when things don't go how you plan. When the nurse said, "It's a boy" after looking at the ultrasound screen, my heart leapt. A boy! I wasn't expecting that! Let me tell you, I am in love with this boy. His coming was the ultimate lesson...God telling me, "You know, Cary, I can write your story a whole lot better than you can. Trust me." I think of that every time I hug Rush or hold him or celebrate another birthday. Trust me. He and his sister have made sense out of my life and continue to deepen my purpose every day.

I think he is just the GREATEST. He is sweet and smart and loving and thoughtful and eats his green vegetables and sleeps like a champ. He's got style, this kid...Andy just described his clothing style as "SEC Undergrad," which of course had me beaming with pride. I just love him, but really, to know him is to love him. The first photo is Rush running and having a blast and letting loose and reminding me of his Daddy. This next photo is him staring at the Mississippi River, which he could do for hours if I let him. That's the Mommy in him. Happy Birthday, Rushie! You are my sweet, sweet boy and I love you all the way to the moon and back.

I can't go back and I don't want to. 'Cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you.

Rush Fun in Branson

I was just looking through our photos from our recent weekend in Branson. A common theme was Rush having fun! Since he is often in the shadows of his larger-than-life sister, I thought I'd just post some photos of my little man having a great weekend. I hope you were wanting to see a bunch of photos of Rush, because that's what you're getting!

Swinging in Matt and Michele's backyard...dirty feet- I love it!

You couldn't wipe the smile off of this guy even if you tried.

He LOVED the trampoline, after he got used to it. He's my cautious boy that lets loose when he feels safe.

He got some much-needed Papaw time.

Enjoying a cupcake at Finn's 11th birthday party!

Crafting a monster puppet at Finn's party. He was so thoughtful about where each sticker should go.

With all 7 of his cousins and his big sister. What a blessing!

A bit of soapy water goes a long way...

Cary took a bunch of amazing shots of the kids chasing bubbles in the alley next to our building. This one of rush is my favorite by far. Some other great shots follow. We need to start using that space a lot more; it could be a huge help with the condo cabin fever!

What I Wore

I should start off by saying that I do not consider myself a style expert. I am thoughtful about how I dress, and am not one of those people who just throws something on. A lot of my clothes are pieces that I've owned for years. And sometimes, I am a frumpy-dumpy...I wear jammies when I am in the privacy of our own home! Instead of these posts being "look at how cute I dress! everyone should be like me," I think of them as just fun documentation. I would give anything to have these kind of photos and information from my mom when she was younger! Here is a photo of me...in my mom's WEDDING DRESS!-In her defense, it is a lot cuter in her wedding photos than it was on me in her living room this summer. She weighed about 90 pounds when her and my dad were married and this looked so cute and was totally in style for 1972. But I love her old photos and her old clothes, even this shockingly short piece she chose to wear to her wedding. So if I consider this blog a gift to my children, then this is just a part of that. I think Winnie would want to see these posts.

Last Sunday evening, I went to the opera with my sister-in-law Katie. Fancy Cary!
Dress- gray sleeveless sundress from Vie in Ladue
Jacket- White House/Black Market
Shoes- peep toe wedges from the Steve Madden store
Necklaces- the long copper one is Mia Sorella and the small rectangle one is from Box Turtle
Clutch- I wish you could see my purse better...it is covered in gold beads and disks, maybe my most favorite thing I've ever owned. My mom bought it for me at Anthropologie the other day for $9.95 on sale. Deal of a lifetime, in my opinion.

I ran errands Monday morning- Whole Foods, Schnucks, etc. And just to squash any rumors before they start, I am not pregnant. It was just a tight tank top.
Shirt- gray tank top from Target
Necklace- same one from the outfit before
Skirt- blush colored from Anthropologie. I think this skirt is a beauty and would probably wear it every day if I could.
Shoes- pewter Havaianas from Splash

Please excuse my awkward leg- it's the only shot I got because we were in a bit of a hurry to go to meet Andy for dinner out on Tuesday night. After dinner, I went to a class at my church.
Shirt- I bought this blouse when I was pregnant with Rush at Urban Outfitters and wore it a ton, so it always reminds me of being pregnant with him.
Shorts- jean shorts, my favorite! These I found at Banana Republic.
Sandals- these snakeskin beauties are Coach brand from Dillards
Necklace- love, love, love this one. I just got it from Addition's etsy site. I think it's a show-stopper...made from a blue and gold vintage brooch.

On Wednesday mornings this summer, I'm doing a moms of young kids group. It was not a safari-themed week, as this photo might suggest.
Shirt- Target button-up
Necklace- my same one from Banana that I wear all the time
Watch- gold men's Armitron from Sears
Shorts- I have had these guys forever...at least 5 years. They are my go-to's from Banana Republic.
Shoes- Theory brand from Piperlime. You either love them or hate them, and I happen to love them.

On Thursday, the kids were visiting with Grandma and Nana, so I had the day off! I went bra shopping (exciting, I know) and had lunch with Andy at Almonds.
Shirt- one.september ruffled tank from Anthropologie
Jeans- Citizens of Humanity
Shoes- TOMS red stone washed twill shoes Mom bought me at Wilkinson's
Watch- silver Michael Kors

On Friday, I packed in the morning, and we drove to Branson in the afternoon to spend the weekend with my family.
Shirt- a David Gray concert t-shirt that I've cut the neck out of. The shirt has a leafless tree on it that changes colors in different lights. An updated hypercolor shirt, if you will.
Skirt- I don't even know where this is from. I am not even sure that it is mine. Maybe it's my little sister's? Mine now.

So I didn't take photos on Saturday in Branson, so this is a blurry me on Monday. I need to work on my posture.
Shirt- striped ruffled tank from Old Navy
Jacket- I love this thing! It's from Gap.
Jewelry- same watch as above, and the necklace was a gift from my little sister. It's a bicycle and is from the Box Turtle.
Pants- these are lululemon stance pants
Shoes- my trusty Jessica Simpson snakeskin flats

Summer List

Last August, I saw this idea on ohdeedoh's website, and have been counting the days until summer so I could make one for our family. I think looking at this poster helped me to get through some of the long winter months! You can click on this link, but mine looks almost exactly like theirs, but the "things" are a bit different:

Happy Summer! Bring on the heat! This family is living it up in 2011.

Rooftops see skylines, train tracks, and powerlines

Last night we walked down to the City Museum to ride the roof top ferris wheel. The kids have been seeing it for a long time from way down on the ground, and were asking to ride. Its actually a small-ish ferris wheel, but by putting it atop a 10-story building, they've created something really fun.

The first ride, Rush went with me. He seemed to really like it, but he was clutching my shorts just in case things got out of hand.
Winnie was fearless, and really enjoyed herself. She would've ridden for hours if they would have let her.
I was proud of how well they did with the ride, and both wanted to go again after we had seen some other stuff on the roof.

On our way out, we passed a fan blowing and Winnie made the funniest face. Summer fun is officially kicked off!
