BEACH BASH - THE ALBUM

REPORTING FROM, BEACH BASH 2009

June 5, 2009 - Once again, something is about to happen at the foyer of KDU College. Coconut husks, torches, Tiki masks and bamboo stakes of various sizes were brought in to make over the foyer for the latest event promoted by Creative Arts & Performance Society. The night was entitled ‘CAPS Beach Bash 2009’. Headed by the club’s President, Erica Choong Mei Ling, the night is aimed at fostering creativity, confidence, performance and artistic qualities. It is also an event purposefully create to offer a platform to students where they may showcase their talents and exercise their soft skills and channeling it to a cause.

Preparations were undertow the day before and crew members were buzzing around college the day itself, right up to minutes before the event. Booths were set up, the stage was brought in and replicas of coconut trees and Tiki masks were shaped. The deco team was headed by our in-house design student, Azlin and helped by many other members of the club.

By 7p.m., the venue was nicely decorated and capturing a never seen before beach-like-atmosphere in KDU College Penang. Soon after that, guests were seen entering the premise and started to mingle around right away. Performers were getting ready for the show and booth attendances were occupied with the early birds. Guests were allowed to curb their appetites by purchasing food from the food kiosk, and fruity beverages from the ‘Tiki Bar’. Many camera clicks were heard and pictures taken at the venue. They were displayed and for-sale at the event’s ‘Photo Booth’. The ‘Body Art’ booth was a crowd pleaser that night, with many tribal arts drawn on guests by our own members.

Let the show begin! - Emcees, Bill Reitberger and Yugendran Sivakumaran started off the night at 8p.m. by welcoming the guests and promising a fun night! ‘Dawgmatics’ was the first to woe the crowd and they did just that with their opening number, ‘Check Yes Juliet’. The band is made up of vocalist, Christopher Huang, drummer, Benjamin Sigh, bassist, Ariff Rahimi and Jay Lim, Kevin Khoo and Tee Yew Shen were on the guitars. Two more numbers were played after that, ‘Home’ and ‘The Man Who Can’t be Moved’. The microphone was then conceded to Fern with the punk rock ‘Complicated’ and then followed by Benignus singing ‘Time After Time’. Rachel Fong entertained the crowd with her rendition of ‘Love Story’ with the accompaniment of the band.

The night went on with a stage magic performance by a fellow Korean student, Swan. His fast and skillful magic tricks mesmerised many and left the rest wondering what else is up his sleeves? The crowd was then entertained with a ‘Beat Box’ performance by our very own emcees and Benjamin, the drummer. A ‘Hip-Hop’ performance was presented to the crowd courteous of the Miracle Creator Dance Crew. Styles ranging from pop-and-lock to break dance were performed. A game of ‘Limbo’ then succeeded the dance performance. Six guests were invited to the stage and by the end of that, Chrystina Fong proved to be the ‘Queen of Limbo’. Though there were no losers, because all of the volunteers walked away with reload coupons for participation. The event then took a break at 9.30 p.m.

Thirty minutes later, the act resumed with the Afro-Brazilian dance of Capoeira. It was enthusiastically demonstrated by Capoeira Senzala Penang of YMCA. The crowd was pleasantly surprised after the performance as many were new to the art form and has never seen it up close. ‘Dawgmatics’ took centre stage again, with ‘Dare You to Move’, ‘This Love’ and ‘Won’t Go Home With Out You’. Jennifer Henson wowed the crowd with her vocals of ‘Love Song’ and Cindy Leow belted ‘That’s What You Get’ by The Paramore. Maya Hanum gave the crowd something to talk about with ‘Long Train Running’.

The crowd was anxiously awaiting this next number and everyone understood why as soon as Azlin, Maytheni and Jennifer Khoo stepped on stage with their shimmers and studded ‘Belly Dancing’ outfits. The girls gave an unforgettable performance of the Middle Eastern dance. Jia Wei, Bill Reitberger and Sean Khoo joined the girls on stage before being “kicked” off candidly by the girls. Two couples, Brenda/Jared and Elaine/Ken then gave an outstanding performance of a renowned Latin dance, the ‘Cha-Cha’ which then transitioned into a ‘Hip-Hop’ dance. The night was hyped-up with a teamed up performance of the Miracle Creator Dance Crew and beat boxers. The night drew to an end and closing act of the night was an upbeat ‘Dance, Dance’ by Bill and the band.

Extensions of thank you-s, goodbyes, good show, congratulations, good job and other warm wishes of that sort were heard uttered around the venue as the show ended at 11.30p.m. The crowd dwindled down to only the production crew and restoration efforts began. Cleaning-up finished at approximately 1a.m. and together with the help of most members and performers, the foyer looked like what it usually is on a normal day of college.

Evidently, college is not all about the academics. A big part of it is also about how we learn from the environment and others. We CAPS, believe that by organising an event as such, can achieve a lot more and compliment what students have learned in classrooms. We have paved the road for other clubs in KDU and other colleges to do the same. We call out to fellow peers to heed the challenge and encourage showmanship of college students. We hope to see more student/youth based activities in the near future.
