3rd Grade Field Trip

Aden had a field trip today to the Dallas World Aquarium. We had so much fun!

His class has been studying rainforest animals, and Aden completed a project on the ocelot.

There's a rainforest area in the aquarium, so off we went!

We had Aden's friend, Hunter, with us for the day. Aden had a blast! Even Hunter said, "best field trip ever."

The big draw was this extremely friendly sloth. He was not afraid of anyone. The boys got really close.

Here are some other moments...

Oh, Ethan...

I'd love to be able to document all the crazy, random, inspirational, witty, completely thought-provoking things that 5-year-old Ethan says. The truth is, it's an all day, EVERY day thing! He's at a very inquisitive age right now, and has some extremely well thought out questions (like, if the bible doesn't end with Jesus dying - what exactly IS the ending? And why do so many people write songs with the word "ride" in it?)

And then many times, he's just saying something incredibly funny. Like this week, while we were driving to school, he said, "Hey mommy. Do you think 'Earth Power' is a good name for my kid?"

And other times, he just inspires me to be better. Like a couple of weeks ago when we were trying to shovel out a bush from the front yard. I mentioned that I didn't think we would be able to do it and he told me that I just have to believe in myself and have faith in God.

I pray that he always shares with me this way. I hope he always asks me for advice and for explanation. I hope he always keeps his witty sense of humor and his bright curiosity of life. I love that I get to experience his life right alongside him.

Easter date with Gigi

We wanted to try a new Easter tradition with Gigi, so the boys made her an invitation to go out to lunch with her on Easter weekend. She accepted!

They bought her a beautiful, peach rose corsage, and took her to a tea room (her favorite thing to do!)
She was very impressed with how well they looked in their formal attire. I was very glad we could get another good use out of these clothes before they grew out of them.

And Ethan was glad he didn't have to wait for another cruise before he could go to a fancy meal.

I love these boys so much. They are just so handsome!

Go Scrappers!

After several seasons of soccer, Aden's trying out baseball this season. And he's doing a great job! He hits the ball pretty well, and got the teams first run of the season (earning him the game ball!)

He still has a ways to go, but I'm very proud of Aden for trying new things. He's so brave.

The Pickle Parade

Aden and Ethan are lucky enough to get to ride in Lola's Lincoln every year during the Pickle Parade. They really do have their parade wave down now. We have two running traditions for St. Patty's Day - eating green desserts and riding in the parade.

After the parade, there was a street festival with food and entertainment. We thought we might get rained out, but it turned out to be a nice evening.

Ethan got his face painted like a... tiger?
Aden refused the face painting.

Ethan also got his picture taken with the Pickle.
Aden refused.

Then we got ice cream.
Aden accepted.

Gryffindor

I'm not sure I mentioned our cat. Aden got Gryffindor (named after Harry Potter's "house" at school) for Christmas. He;s been wanting a cat for two years. Begging, pleading, making promises - anything to get a cat. And now he has one.

Gryff was a dumpster cat that we rescued at only 7 weeks old. He stunk... badly. It took several weeks and lots of bathing to get rid of that stink. He's a good looking cat and doesn't shed. His fur is very soft and he feels oh so huggable. The problem is, he bites.

All. The. Time.

Aden has been unable to cuddle or play with him because this cat is constantly biting! We kept thinking he'd grow out of it, get used to us, settle down. But it hasn't stopped. The problem is, at this point Aden is completely smitten. He loves this cat with everything he has and will not even THINK about getting another.

On the one hand, I'm glad he isn't so quick to toss one aside for another. I'm glad he has a heart for animals, and he really does a great job caring for Gryff. But on the other hand, I'm just so mad at this stupid cat for not giving Aden the compassion he wants.

And then there are these tiny moments, like the one captured in this photo, that give me hope.
