Title: POGON1, a "bona fide" family of nonautonomous DNA transposons. |

Abstract: POGON1 belongs to the Mariner/Tc1 clad of DNA transposons. There are ~25 copies of POGON1 in the euchromatin regions of the D. melanogaster genome, most of them are 100% identical to the consensus sequence and to each other. POGON1 elements have 21-bp TIRs and the TA TSDs. POGON1 is a perfect example of nonautonomous DNA transposons, which are erroneously called by some researchers as MITEs. The 88-bp termini of POGON1 are identical to those in POGO, the autonomous DNA transposon. Presumably, an internal deletion in a POGO element formed an ancestor of POGON1. It's highly likely POGON1 elements are currently transposable. Clearly, molecules of the POGO-encoded transposase execute "cut and paste" transpositions of POGON1.
