Intercordia Canada is an organization that facilitates international experiences for young, Canadian university students through the lens of being with rather than doing for. The primary intent of the Intercordia experience is not to change the world but to change our understanding of the world. Living and working across cultures and becoming involved in people’s lives requires us to be attentive, respectful and curious. We have developed a unique mentorship program that supports participants in critical thinking and engaging them in deep and radical learning.

How the program works.

Why Mentorship is the Key to Transformative Learning Experiences

Fosters Self-reflection

Self-reflection is one of the most vital aspects of transformative learning; mentorship provides a framework to encourage it. It is like a mirror, which allows mentees to critically examine the paths to and around their thoughts, actions, and decisions. Through guided discussion and thought-provoking questions, mentees come to better understand their strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations.

Providing Guidance

In reality, a mentor offers a completely different tone. Whether academically, career-wise, or personally, things get complex, and having a mentor would go on long to make such a difference in an individual's life. Mentoring is also about helping mentees set practical goals, chart their strategies for reaching them, and sidestep common pitfalls.

Supporting Emotional Resilience

Emotional health is necessary for achievement since it enables people to overcome obstacles, stay confident, as well as persist in pursuit despite hardship. Wisdom and experience can give much stability amidst the uncertainties of life so that students can find their learning process sustainable and productive at the same time.

Experiential Learning

Among all the techniques of learning, the best is through experience, and mentorship aids in experiential understanding by giving learners real-world insight and hands-on experience. Unlike school, where the massive part of learning is theory, mentorship enables learners to apply their skills in real situations through job shadowing, internships, and collaborative projects.

Encouraging Critical Thinking

Mentorship is instrumental in developing an open thinking mentality. By not offering questionable answers, but rather by stimulating thoughts through analysis, evaluation of multiple views, and independent conclusion, mentees are encouraged and conditioned to think critically. That way, the mentee finds a better understanding of difficult topics and becomes more analytical and discerning in his or her decisions.

Encouraging Problem-solving Skills

In reality, it has been proven to even change the perspective of viewing how a problem or obstacle can be solved. With everything being the same, mentees will be able to tackle their problems with self-confidence as well as adaptability and innovation in the future, be it personal or professional.

Shapes Leadership Skills

Observation and interaction with seasoned advisors will teach the mentees essential characteristics of leadership, such as decision-making, communication, teamwork, and responsibility. Many mentees find it good role model typologies and a great learning process in adopting crucial leading behaviors. Learning in such an atmosphere will lead to learners being more capable and confident.

Effective Mentorship Programs

The success of a mentoring program entirely depends on the nature of the mentoring program and its effectiveness. Structured mentorship programs establish goals, train mentors, and provide supportive structures for mentees. An effective program ensures that the wider community surrounding the mentoring activities will also reap rewards, promoting a culture of learning and development.

Exchange Of Wisdom

The mentoring relationship is the wise exchange of knowledge, where knowledge is specified through years of experience, insights, and lessons learned over time which the mentor shares with the mentee. All of this comes under inculcating learning in a faster way and helps the mentee not to commit silly mistakes.
