My mediocre attempts to blog

Even after a year of inactivity, this is still my most visited blog.

I have been making things, but at a much slower and less frequent rate than when I first got into modular origami. Mostly I’ve been making Hello Kitty models and little daggers; things that don’t take very long.

Let’s try to get this going again though, shall we?

I’m sorry!

You’ve probably noticed that I have been extremely inactive on this blog.

I guess a simple sorry won’t suffice.

I started moving everything to a tumblr blog, but not quite everything. I don’t want to make a blog solely dedicated to my origami, at least not anymore. I might change my mind in the future, but for now, I am going to move my origami to my somewhat new WordPress blog, Words, Ink, and Paper.

Everything is still under construction. I’m working on it.

I’m working on school too. Midterms coming up and term papers to write.

3D Origami Pencil

If I hadn’t specified in the title, please let me know that this looks like what I say it is. After having three people stare at a picture without a clue, I finally changed the top part. Hopefully it looks more like a pencil now.

Excuse the poor-quality photo. Hopefully I’ll have time to take another one.

The reason I made this was because the owl in which I put some of my pencils and pens in is not staying together. The top pieces aren’t sticking and I don’t want to fold new pieces to replace them. So the first thing I thought of was a pencil to hold my pencils and pens.

And yes, I designed this all by myself. I’m a big girl now.

Maybe that’s why nobody can tell what it is, because I came up with the design… bah.

Inverted base (not shown).
Each level is 24 units.

3D Origami Toy Story Alien

This alien is from Pixar’s Toy Story. I attempted to make an actual hole for the mouth, but it didn’t work out so well and I substituted with black pieces instead. I also had some green pieces of a different shade and I attempted to form a smile around the ‘gaping’ hole. However, due to difficulties, taking pieces apart and putting them back together, I completely forgot about the subtle smile and they ended up mixed up and scattered. But that’s okay; the off-coloured pieces aren’t that noticeable. The body required twenty units per level, and the head twenty-eight units per level.

Here is a blurry top view.

A side view.

And a bottom view. You can see that I made a bit of a mistake with the base ring. I used an inverted base (the white units).

The Claw

I have side-view pictures of this Toy Story Alien as well, but those are still on my camera and who knows how long it will take until I find the motivation to upload them onto my computer?

This was a birthday present to my friend, hence my tardiness in posting a picture.

Body: 20 units
Head: 28 units

Ears were attached through slits I made in the head.

Heyhowdyhey

I’m still working on 3D origami. I finished a piece about a week and a half ago, but I will only be able to post a picture of it in the second week of November. Reasons being that it is a friend’s birthday gift, and I’d rather not have her see it before she celebrates another year of avoiding death.

Actual assembling of paper triangles has slowed down due to school work. I’m still cutting paper and folding it if I happen to be sitting down and needing to do something with my hands. I most likely will not work on anything for all of November because it will be NaNoWriMo.

Oh, and I made a little swan out of small triangles that I cut out of post-it notes.

Post-It Swan.

Biplane and Master Sword

I don’t know why I forgot to post my airplane after I “finished” it. All the parts and pieces are complete. It was just a matter of gluing it all together and making it stay. Unfortunately something happened and I became too frustrated to continue trying to keep the wheels on. Parts of the tail and the wings require a certain pattern that I have never seen before this model, and so I was having a little trouble with it. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I couldn’t get some edges to be entirely straight, or for it to stay together as firmly as I would have liked.

Gluing was a very difficult process. I was actually patient this time. If anybody attempts this model, please let me know in what order you glued the parts in.

I also completed my Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda yesterday (September 7th). I have no idea how big it would actually be, but I imagine that this piece is life-sized anyway. Unfortunately, I cannot wave it around and sword fight with it. Despite most of the pieces being fit together quite well, the blade is quite long and will not support itself.

Yesterday was also the day when glue decided to stop cooperating with me. Usually glue takes forever to dry, but yesterday it felt like the moment I applied some glue to reinforce the handle or parts of the blade, all the pieces would stick together. It wouldn’t have been such a big problem if I hadn’t stuck the hilt (which I had kind of split in half in order to apply some glue onto one of the levels) on incorrectly. I ended up jamming it back together after many failed attempts. Also, I had to fold some new triangles because I had to rip some in order to take them out to reconnect the whole thing. Overall, it wasn’t a very good experience near the end.

Even though the sword didn’t turn out as epic as I had envisioned it to be, I still think it’s cool. Heck, it’s got the Triforce of Wisdom on it.

Next piece of 3DO weaponry: lightsaber. Probably won’t be remotely life-sized, and its existence will depend on what colours I have. I’m in the middle of making birthday and Christmas presents while I still have time.

3D Origami Shrooms

I promise I’ll finish up my biplane now.

I know that the faces are wide, but since construction paper is soft and flimsy, and the modules fall apart after you finish folding it unless you connect them, it was hard to curve the top of the shrooms. I don’t have any light peach paper so I used this super pale yellow and lightlightlight green for the 1-up, which was the first one I made. Afterwards I just used white A4 1/32 printing paper.

The mini shroom is just made out of less pieces. I’ll work with 1/64 pieces another time. All credit goes to this artist HERE.

The printing paper that I have is recycled, so it appears less white than some of the other paper that I use. The brighter, whiter paper is usually notes, notices, or just junk paper with a blank side that nobody needs. I take it and cut it up so that we don’t feel bad putting it all in the recycling bin.
