Punchbowl News: “GOP lawmakers are growing increasingly outspoken about their frustration over the lack of details on the scope of President Donald Trump’s ongoing war in Iran.”

“As the Trump administration surges thousands of troops into the Middle East and begins laying the groundwork for tens of billions of dollars in funding for the war, Republican defense hawks say they need more information from the White House.”

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), chair of the Armed Services Committee, put it this way: “We want to know more about what’s going on, what the options are, and why they’re being considered. We’re just not getting enough answers.”

Politico: “Donald Trump’s messaging on what he wants from American allies in his war against Iran is so confusing that any effort to help in reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains deadlocked, according to four European government officials.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted to call on Iranians to flood the streets to protest their government last week, but President Trump told him it was just too risky, Axios reports.

Said Trump: “Why the hell should we tell people to take to the streets when they’ll just get mowed down.”

In an interview with Iranian state TV, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said that no talks with the United States have taken place, the AP reports.

Said Araghchi: “No negotiations have happened with the enemy until now, and we do not plan on any negotiations.”

A long-awaited meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will take place in Beijing on May 14 and 15, CNBC reports.

The Atlantic: “The strategy that Iran is pursuing now—asymmetric warfare against superior U.S. forces—is reminiscent of the methods used by Iraqi insurgents to counter American and allied militaries on the ground more than two decades ago.”

“Back then, the weapons of choice were improvised explosive devices dug into roadsides by Iraq’s insurgents. Today, they are cheap Iranian drones and floating mines.”

“As of last week, U.S. officials believe that as many as a dozen Iranian mines are already in the waterway, and some 5,000 more are in reserve. In both cases, low-cost, mobile, and easily concealed weapons pose an outsize threat to far more advanced—and expensive—U.S. weaponry.”

New York Times: “The ease and relative cost of production have helped give Iran the ability to keep fighting and create havoc across the region, even in the face of widespread U.S.-Israel bombardment. Iran is regularly firing missiles and drones across the Gulf, albeit at a lower rate than at the start of the conflict. Mr. Atalan said Iran was still able to launch 70 to 90 drones per day. That was down from more than 400 drones launched on March 1…”

“Iran is focusing large numbers of drones on the Gulf States. The distance from Iran to those nations is much closer than to Israel, giving them less time to react and shoot the drones down.”
