Why we might be, most likely will be, moving next year

So I just sent out am email explaining to family our big adventure this year and thought I might post here for friends to get the just as well.  It can be really confusing.

This is Brian's final year of medical school.  In May there will be a graduation ceremony where he will be capped and given his doctorate.  As many of you know he is away living across the county until November. This year he is continuing his "on the job" training in a variety of specialties.  Last year he did transplant surgery,  orthopedic surgery,  family medicine,  internal medicine,  psychiatry,  obgyn,  orthopedic oncology,  and pediatrics. After several years :)  in school and going through those specialities he has finally decided on a career.... General surgery ( possibly specializing in transplant surgery).

So on to why he is gone for months.  The beginning of this year he has what is called audition rotations or away rotations.  Basically it is a month long job interview where he can check out the program, hospitals,  and surgeons he would be working with. He chose to check out four programs in Tulsa OK,  Farmington Hills MI, Des Moines IA, and Dayton OH. In the coming weeks he will finish his applications for all the places he would like to be hired across the county.

November Brian will resume working in Kansas City until May.  November and December are interview months.  During those months he will hear back from some of or all of the places he had applied to.  Then he will travel to interview with the directors and faculty for the hospitals in the survey department.  After interviews have finished we will put in order 1 to 20 (or however many we applied) from our most desired to least.

Now comes the crazy confusing part.  In the spring there is THE MATCH it is basically a lottery for all doctors across the country.  Every doctor will put their desired programs in order of desire. Also every hospital will put in order their picks for hiring as they sort through their interviewers. So there are two lists: one from applicants and one from hospitals.  All are put into a computer program which tries to generate as many "matches" as possible.

So on MATCH DAY everyone across the country is sent an email with where they were assigned to go.  So as to where we are going we have some control because we pick where we apply.  Also we can pick our top picks.  Other then that we are at the mercy of the match.  We won't have any idea where we go until then.  (For those who are lds, it is like a mission call all over, we open the letter and see where we are headed for the next 5 to 7 years.)

So what is Brian applying for?  The next stage is residency.  After May graduation Brian is officially Dr. Bergstrom, yeah.  However he has chosen a specialty that requires a lot of additional training.  Residency for his will last 5 years.  Wherever we match to we will move and Brian will work for that hospital training as a general surgeon.  The first year has several names.  It is called first year residency,  intern year,  or pgy1 (post grad year 1). Depending on who you talk to they will call it something different.  After that it is usually just called residency or pgy-whatever year.

After Brian's five year residency he may decide to continue training again and specialize even further.  Right now that is our plan but who knows how we will feel after five years. If he does it will be the same process of applying and matching but for a two year contract.  After ALL of this is over he will get his first post training job.  At that point we may move yet again to settle and build his practice.

Whew that is a lot of info. So basically we don't know where we are going and everything is up in the air.  On the upside Brian is LOVING surgery and gaining so much from each place he visits.  We are so proud of him and even though we have a long road ahead of us we are ready for the journey together.

I hope that this helps explain what we are in the thick of and why we might be stressed or hard to reach.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

catch up time

I am slowly realizing how busy the next year is going to be for our family.   I am graduating this next year (it has been a long time coming), Brian will graduate a year from May, Isa will be baptized,  and many more events to come.  This past month Brian spent away on a rotation. It wasn't as bad as we thought but it isn't something we want to do a lot.  However we are realizing that fall will be full of many lonely night apart in the pursuit of a good residency.  Oh the joys of a med student.  This to shall pass.  Here are some highlights from the last few weeks.

Month in review

I have to say I am very glad that this month is almost over. Although it has not been nearly as difficult as I anticipated, I am exhausted and ready to live in a two parent household again. This month Brian has been at an out of town rotation. He was able to come home two weekends in a row but alas these past two weeks have been busy. Sometimes I look at all the responsibilities I have and I wonder how I got myself into this. The month has been full of snow days, days out of school, class parties, field trips, holidays, Young Women camp planning, Young Women activities and lessons, keeping up with the girls, homework, and parenting an almost two year old that runs me ragged. When I sit down to write on this here blog I feel like I have nothing to say since for weeks I have been writing thousands of words on an hourly basis. School this semester is less test based and more comprised of quizzes, essays, and research papers. I love my classes. They are family and child advocacy (which is where I am looking to work before grad school), family history (which is becoming increasingly more important in my life), and careers in psychology (which is helping me figure out my career path which up until now has been a one day not a what to do now).

Somehow along the way I have been able to capture a few of the things going on in our lives so here they are in no particular order.

Damon now does most of the shopping which leads to him buying more cookies than he needs
Which makes him sick in the back of the car and causes mom a lot of stress and cleaning
So we resorted to getting every thing at once which was a VERY LONG grocery trip in which I didn't want to even check out knowing I had to unpack. But then I say this photo below once more and realized this meant less of these moments so I am glad that my marathon shopping was done early.
This cute face was the only thing from keeping me from yelling, crying, or just getting plain upset. He did get dumped into the bath, clothes and all because oreo/snot isn't cool to clean!

3rd grade musical

I absolutely love these performances full of kids singing slightly off key at times and reading of lines and you might only catch half of.  It is a blast and a great partis that are short so you really do enjoy every minute even with kids in toe.

January update

Well after a busy holiday we finally got back into our usual rhythm,  kind of.  I am back in school taking a few classes which are really keeping me busy but I LOVE them.  I am really getting the chance to focus on what is next,  what I want to do outside of the home (for now and then after kids are grown).

Brian is still moving around from rotation to rotation.  January was a great month for his as he focused on Orthopedic Oncology.  Way over my head but he Loved it! Brian had been really blessed to be assigned to some of the top doctors in their field this year,  it had really been such an amazing experience.

Damon is crazy,  busy,  destructive,  and the most loveable kid ever.  He never ceases to keep us on our toes.

Layla is soaring this year in school.  She is not only learning so much and doing well but she is really growing into her own person.  She is a girl so there is much drama around life's daily adventures but she is becoming more compassionate with each passing day.  We love having her there to watch after her siblings and ever teach us the Blessings that come from parenthood.

Isa is our continuous mystery. The giggly little thing always had us wondering what us really going on in that head of hers.  This just means that she keeps to herself.  Everything in her words is "great"! There is little expanded on.  She had really taken a love for playing with Damon and he just adores her.  She had the patience if job and will play the same game over and over day in and day out.  She is also my thoughtful kid.  Since Brian is gone during February she gets up and helps clean the house before anyone else wakes up.  I really don't know what I would do without her.

Layla's birthday

For Layla's birthday this year we had an art part for her and 15 friends in our house ( and by house I mean tiny apartment). However crazy it was the kids seemed to have a great time.

Christmas at the Bergstrom home

This year we took fewer pictures since we focused more on being present in the moments of the day, which lately is our main focus.  There are too many distractions in life that take our time and attention away from the moments that really matter.  So here are the few shots we got off our day.
Damon and I watched the action while the sister divided up all the gifts.

I love that Isa and Damon have the same cheesy grin!

Our Elf is back

It is that time of year when Elf had returned to our home. I Am thankful that he is not a naughty Elf like I have heard many of them are. Ours is silly but kind and that seems to help the kids stay good.
 First he brought breakfast
Later he narrated the nativity scene
He joined some fellow "elves" for breakfast.
He did some sledding in the kitchen.
Put on a comedy show for the winter guests.

And joined the snowman choir.

So what does your Elf do?

Second half of the first day off school

l somehow never got around to posting the after school photos and updates for school. Like I said in another post layla loves third grade. Isa has a simply darling teacher who is really striving to help Isa with her confidence and come out of her shell. We love it. Damon misses the sisters when they are gone but time just with mom is working out great. Here are our after the first day photos.

Mom's little helper

This little man is by my side all day long while the sisters are at school. It is so weird to just have one but it is also nice to get that time together. On a weekly basis we try to go visit Nana which is probably his favorite activity. Every morning when we drop off the girls he says promptly as we drive off "going Nana?"

To say he loves his nana would be an under statement. We also try to get all the errands run like the grocery shopping, trips to the library, and preparations for the week or meetings. I feel like this semester is meeting after meeting and somehow I am trying to fit them all in. But it is always nice to have my little sidekick along with me. He is truly the most loving and busy little boy, I love him with all my heart and even though he makes me crazy I wouldn't trade our time together.

Shopping at Sam's Club means Lunch tasting time, his favorite!
