A Year?

So Leilani just turned FIVE!
It occurred to me the other day that I have not done any sort of record keeping for an entire year.
What a horrible thought!
My children have done so many things and grown in so many ways but I've no way to look back and remember those things.
Perhaps it is for the best?
This year was a tipsy turvey roller coaster and I may not have been in the best of state to write my point of view of the whole thing.
But, for right now, I would like to share some things about my adorable daughter and her charming character.
Leilani is a ray of sunshine to those around her.
She is full of life and makes every day and every event the BEST!
Things are so magical to her right now.
She loves holidays and celebrations.
According to her, she is the fastest runner, the highest jumper, the most accomplished artist, the most beautiful singer, the greatest sense of humor, and the list goes on and on.
I've decided to just go with it because I know the world has the power to bring her down soon enough so why not give her the best head start in confidence now so that when the world does come crashing down hopefully the blow will be softened by her inner self esteem:)
She has been doing a preschool program for the last several months that has been helping her learn to read and has greatly improved her number recognition and use.
I usually stand back in awe at her ability to read difficult words and understand concepts.  I hope her joy of literature continues when she can be independent enough to read on her own.
Right now she is resisting that freedom and still wants me or Targhee to read to her.  I wonder if it has something to do with not being ready to lose that part of childhood.
Even though she is extremely advanced in her academics and language skill, preschool is a source of contention between the two of us every day.
She just doesn't want to do it.
She has a little bit of a lazy bone when it comes to anything that requires work.
Play?
She is all over that for hours and hours.
Work?
The end of the world has just encompassed her.
She is not above bribery, however, and reward systems tend to be her main motivation right now.
Her current household jobs include emptying the dishwasher, making her bed and cleaning her room (which, somehow no matter how much effort is put into this particular avenue, always looks like a disaster... she has too many other important things to worry about than where a pair of shoes or dirty pants go:)
She actually likes her dishwasher job and we'll play along with that for as long as we can!
She's a little social butterfly.
It doesn't matter if her audience is 68 or 3 years old, she can talk their ear off for as long as they will let her.
She loves playing with friends and having activities to do each day.
Even so, if there are no friends to play with or Mom is not being very accommodating with the activities she still contains her incredible imagination and can play in her own wonderland for hours.
She is taking dance lessons right now and learning tumbling, tap, ballet, and hip hop.  She loves dance class and I can see her being very successful in it if she wants to continue.  She especially loves to put on her dance outfits and I know will be in little girl heaven when she gets to put on her costumes and perform on stage.
She is really looking forward to her new little brother to come to our family in April.  She talks about him often and all the things she is going to teach him and do with him.  She's been practicing with her own baby doll and the only thing she says she wont do is change his diapers:)
We'll work on that one.
She is a Daddy's little girl in every sense of the term.
She tolerates Mom for the most part, but she comes to life when Dad is home.
I truly am grateful for their relationship.
We are so grateful for our flamboyant little girl who doesn't feel so little anymore.
She makes us laugh all the time by her many comments and we're so glad she is in our family.
Happy Fifth Birthday Leilani!

A Labor of Love

I've been MIA for a while, not really on purpose, but there's been plenty going on,  I'll have to play catch up later, but, this is what I did this "fall"/Christmas break.  It was intended to be a nice project to keep me busy without a husband (aka while Targhee was finishing up his last semester of college with 18 credit hours, working two jobs, and doing an internship!) Turns out, I had plenty to keep me busy...  so it got done the week before Christmas.

Before:
It was time for this amazing wall paper to go.  Leilani was super sad to say goodbye to her pink walls and blue flowers.
This section took me three hours to remove the wall paper. This project took some learning.
AH ha!  Figured it out.
Once I got going it came off fairly easy.
The one and only time I let Leilani color on the walls:)
Awwh a clean wall!  It stayed this way for several months...
After Targhee's graduation I could solicit his help.  I honestly wouldn't have been able to do it without him.  Good thing we're a good team. (p.s. see all those spackle marks?  Times that by about 40 and you'd have how many holes I covered and sanded.)
The cursed PINK walls!!!
I did NOT choose pink.  I chose a very pretty tan color.  It looked tan in the bucket, it looked tan on my paint brush and it even looked tan on my fingers, but on the wall...it was pink. I gawked at it the entire time we were painting.  Why on earth would I remove pink wall paper just to paint the walls pink again???
When Leilani saw it the next morning she exclaimed happily, "It's pink!!  Just like it was when I was little!"
*Sigh*
Much to my relief, the bottom color neutralized the pink one and I was very happy with how the colors turned out.
I decided to be even more ambitious and add stripes to the top layer.  It is the same color, but flat and gloss striped.
This is how Leilani helped me (even though she REALLY wanted to do more.)
This is how TJ helped me (even though he really REALLY wanted to do more:)
Sadly this is probably the best picture I could get of the stripes.  I don't know if it's the lighting in the room or what, but they are barely noticeable.  Which is quite disheartening considering the amount of work it takes to paint the dang things.  Next time I choose to do stripes I will for sure use different colors so you can see the work put into it.  I like to idea of the flat and gloss though, it gives the wall dimension.
Adding the final touches.
"Oh ok, that's how you do it Dad."
"Now let me show you how it's really done."
The Finished Product!
I am very pleased with how it turned out.  Now to get up enough courage to put a nail in the wall.  They're just so pretty:)

7 Grooms for 7 Sisters

If you ever need some assistance planning an outrageously awesome family reunion go ahead and contact my sisters because we have had some reunions to BOOT the last couple years.
I love my family!
This year we went up to Island park to a beautiful cabin.  An experience I probably won't be able to duplicate in my lifetime.  How do you fit 40 people into one cabin?  With 5 bedrooms, 2 lofts, a master living room, and a deck that wraps around the entire building.  That's how!
But aside from a beautiful cabin and scenery, it was simply one of the most wonderful weeks we have spent together as a family.
My first thought was that this must be one of the many blessings of my parents serving as missionaries.

It has taken me several months to put this on the blog simply because I can't pick which of the 600 photos to post!!  They all make me so happy I don't want to skip any of them.  So please excuse the excessive amount of pictures but that's just what has to happen:)

On our way up there I had to stop in Rexburg and see the temple.  It was the first time I have been back since I graduated in 2006.  The temple was being built when I left so I was excited to see it finished and show my family the place of my "college years."  Good memories:)

 The Grand Tetons.
I loved driving through this area.  It was seriously some of the most beautiful countryside I have seen... and I've seen a lot!
 "Daddy's forest!!"

The theme for this year was "7 Grooms for 7 Sisters" so each day we did an activity that had to do with the theme.
Monday night was "Barn raising!"

This was my team's attempt.  Definitely not the tallest, but most structurally sound haha.

Tuesday we headed to the river for some rafting mania.  We were asked if we were with a youth camp.  Nope!  We just have THAT many teenagers in our family:)

Sometimes pictures don't do scenery justice.  It was beautiful!

The beachers who stayed behind.  TJ is just as happy to sit on the beach and throw rocks.

My little fishy!
Lake time!
Yup I got pooped on.
That night we had a wood sawing and hatchet throwing contest.
My arm was sore the rest of the week!!
Of course Targhee was the ultimate champion!  That's my man!
The younger kids walked the balance beam rather than risking cutting their fingers off, but Leilani wanted to saw SO BAD!
So Dad finally let her.  It's the little things, ya know:)

Wednesday we went to West Yellowstone, ate lunch, devoured more like, at The Gusher, and then played a picture scavenger hunt. We split into 4 teams and had to complete a list of 30 some odd picture findings. Our clan creates quite a wake when we go into public all together.
Baby in a stroller wearing sun glasses.

Someone with a Mullet...haha close enough!
 A pregnant woman:)
We had to complete all the pictures in a specific time so we were all running through West Yellowstone trying to finish!

That night the men stole the "sobbing women!"  Eventually the kids noticed that we were gone and were given instructions on how to find us.  We were all just tucked away in a bedroom giggling as we listened to the chaos outside.  Once they found us they had to answer 3 questions about the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and then find which sister was which "bride".  We each had an ingredient to make smores.  These were no joke smores!  Gourmet at it's finest.

Thursday was ATV day
Leilani was so excited for her turn!
This is probably my favorite photo of the week:)

Hanging out at the cabin
There was no lack of game playing
 Our pedi shop.

The porch had the most amazing swings I've ever seen. Just make sure you time it right if you want to cross.
Cousins are the best!
Can you fit 25 people in your shower?  Cuz I could!!

The teenagers performed a skit from Studio C.  Flirting Academy.
Preston cries when he sees beautiful women.
Morgan trying to attract a man.
So funny:)

That night was our Hoedown!
Setting up our homemade tin lanterns and wild flower center pieces.

The men had been growing their beard out for our grand finally beard trimming contest.
 Our mountain men.

Making the magic happen.  The wives and family had to cut the beard.
The final products
 Seneca from the Hunger Games
The color helps bring out the design:)
 Antlers
 Checkerboard
The full head effect.  It reminded me a Darth Maul.
San Fransisco
 Batman
After a grueling voting session
Nathan won it with the Checkerboard.
 Chuck Norris was proud.

Friday we drove through Yellowstone before heading home.
This was the first animal we spotted:)
I loved the colors!
 Cousin friends!
TJ was pretty much done with our week of excessive fun.  This is him waiting for Old Faithful I'm sure wondering why on earth we were sitting on a bench watching smoke.
Coming...
coming...
BAM!
We took the scenic route home.  It took us FOREVER but it really was beautiful.  I felt mixed emotions getting home.  I was happy to be home, but so sad to say goodbye to my family and to such a wonderful happy week together.
I have the BEST family EVER!
