TV Drama Review #257 - Born Rich 富贵门

No.of Epis: 41
Year/TV Stn: 2009/TVB
Cast:
Ray Lui ~ Marcus Zhuo Yi Yuan
Jaime Chik ~ Connie He Jue Nian
Anita Yuen ~ Rene Zhuo Yi Xin
Gallen Lo ~ Sha Fu Lai / Zhuo Yi Ming
Kenneth Ma ~ Sha Bao Lai
Kenix Kwok ~ Angie Dong Ling Zi
Sharon Chan ~ Dai Yi Xin
Joe Ma ~ Topman Gao Tuo Ming
Synopsis: (edited from Dramawiki)
Sophisticated banker Zhuo Yi Yuan mistakes con artist Sha Fu Lai for his half brother Zhuo Yi Ming, fortuitously elevating the swindler to one of the leading figures in the banking industry. The lost and found brotherhood has blinded Yuan to Fu Lai’s real nature and intentions.
Yuan is kidnapped in Mumbai by a group of rioters. He undergoes a dramatic personality change after the incident. Yuan’s wife, Jue Nian, has tried her best to console him but still cannot help him to get over the unpleasant experience. Longing for more comfort and support, Yuan gets back with his ex-lover Ling Zi. Nian is heartbroken to learn about the affair and decides to file for divorce.
The identity of Zhuo Yi Ming gives Fu Lai not just a sense of family warmth but also a sweet taste of romance. He finds himself in love with Yuan’s younger sister Zhuo Yi Xin. Xin is attracted to Fu Lai too, but thinking that they are true biological siblings, she decides to keep her love under wraps and stays with her long-term admirer Topman instead. This comes as a huge blow to Fu Lai. He is not willing to lose his love, but neither can he reveal his real identity. Caught up in the dilemma between love and money, Fu Lai finally chooses the fortune road of no return.
Slacker's review:
"Born Rich" was one of the mega dramas of TVB in 2009. Well, cast was grand, but plot was average. The storyline was rather predictable, though there were some good twists in between. The lousy twist was Bao Lai survived and made his way back to Sabah. I really wondered how he got back. Ha! Another damn irritating thing was...the only foreign land they kept going was Sabah. I knew Msia Tourism board sort of sponsored the filming, but no need everything also go Sabah right? Ending was alright, though one might wonder if Fu Lai really lost his memories. I thought the scriptwriter was too nice to Fu Lai as well. He caused so many deaths and yet he still cld lead a carefree life in Sabah????
Ray Lui looked good despite his age, but I did not like Yi Yuan. This man was fickle-minded and selfish. He wanted both his wife and Ling Zi by his side. WTH! He ignored his buddy Topman's advice and chose to believe a man whom he knew for such a short time. I wondered if he really loved Connie, or he decided to patch up with her to have a complete family. Well, since Ling Zi was out, Connie was the only choice for him....I don't know...it's just quite unconvincing.
Gallen Lo outshone Ray and Joe in the drama, and to me, he's the real lead. Fu Lai was clearly a bad guy here. He's hungry for fame & power, and he's also determine to have Rene. I thought Gallen's acting was quite good after Lai raped Xin, and his true identity closed to being revealed. The actor's expressions were like turning insane, and getting out of control. Chemistry with Anita was not bad, though I saw more sparks b/w Anita & Joe.
Joe was the big support lead in "Born Rich", and sometimes it's weird to see Joe acting a plain good guy. I still like him acting as neither gd nor bad..hehe! Loved Joe's scenes with Anita, though sometimes I pitied Topman. His love for Xin was deep, but sometimes I did not think Xin deserved his love. The guy became so emotional when Xin decided to stay with Lai after being raped. In the end, Topman still ended up with Xin, but I did not understand why they chose to lead their new life in SABAH!!! Hey, Sha Fu Lai was there too!!! No where else to go??? This is really dumb!
Glad to see one of my fav HK actress on the small screen. Anita's performance was good, but I did not like Xin somehow. She was not honest with herself, and I seriously believed that she did not love Topman as much as he did for her. Throughout their r/s, Xin clearly had feelings for Lai. One of the big twist for Xin was her decision to stay with Lai. However, it was quite clear that she had other motives later on.
First time watching Jamie Chik, who is an actress in the 80s or 90s, and wife of Michael Miu. I liked Connie, as she's really a nice person. She might not be likable initially as she was too rational, and somehow has a distant personalty. I liked how she handled her husband's affair with Ling Zi, and Jamie's acting was great, as we cld feel her pain and sorrow. As for Connie's ending with Yi Yuan, I thought it was quite reasonable, though I wld prefer Connie to remain as a career woman and remained single.
Long time no see Kenix Kwok. You might hate Ling Zi most of the time, but she was one woman who stayed true to her feelings. She cld sacrificed herself so that the guy wld not suffer from a broken family. I cld not stand Ling Zi and Yi Yuan's scenes most of the time, as I really disliked this couple! However, I thought it was rare for a TVB drama to focus so much on a storyline b/w a married man and his lover. Ling Zi's ending was a sad one, but if she did not exit from the big picture, Yi Yuan & Connie wld never reconcile.
Last but not least, Kenneth and Sharon were supporting characters here. They did not have lots of scenes together, and I felt that their storyline was not fully developed. Nice acting from Kenneth when Bao Lai confronted Fu Lai. It's just a pity that Kenneth's Bao Lai was quite insignificant in the drama.
Theme song "差一剎的地老天荒" by Gallen Lo & ending theme "兩生關" by Kay Tse. It's nice to hear Gallen's singing again.

It's Saturday Again~

--Serangoon Broadway--
Took family portrait photos at the studio. It was really awkward to be posing in front of the camera. Hahaha! Let's hope the pics would look nice.
--Orchard--
After lunch, went to SK Jewellery to collect Tuan's ring. I bought another top again from G2000. OK...enough tops now, I need to find pants~!
Walked passed Taka's Swatch and saw my dying Swatch Skin. WTH! The watch cost 167 bucks now! Why getting so expensive? I only bought at 130+ yrs ago leh. Haiz~~~I still like to have a black Swatch Skin sia, but the price is kinda steep.
--Dinner @ NAC Cedele--
Finally, I cld bring Tuan to try the crab meat spaghetti which I liked.
E.W's veggie burger.
Tuan & my red chili crab meat spaghetti with soft shell crab. The red chili spagh tasted quite different from the black pepper version. I liked the mix of spicy tomato herb sauce and sliced chili. However, it was much harder to taste the crab meat.
Had Vanilla Latte as well....think it's better than their Mocha.
--Mooncake Fair at NAC Atrium--
Hoho~Time to eat mooncakes once again! After walking around, we bought Goodwood Park's assorted Snow Skin mooncakes. The mooncake packaging is still the same, but they gave us a thermal carrier. Cool~

Tuan returning to Shanghai next Sat, and I can't send her off....Thanks to the training session! :(

TV Drama Review #256 - Coffee House 咖啡屋

No.of Epis: 18
Year/TV Stn: 2010/SBS
Cast:
Kang Ji Hwan ~ Lee Jin Soo
Park Si Yeon ~ Seo Eun Young
Ham Eun Jung ~ Kang Seung Yeon
Jung Woong In ~ Han Ji Won
Synopsis: (from Dramawiki)
Lee Jin Soo made it big after writing several thriller novels and establishing himself as a talented novelist. He works for Seo Eun Young, the owner of the biggest publishing company in Korea, and has a long-time friendship with her. Jin Soo has lots of fans, especially female ones, and he seems to be the perfect match for any woman... but what no one knows is that he is actually a bit weird and sarcastic, has lots of strange habits, and holds a dark secret. The one who has to cope with him and his habits is his secretary, Kang Seung Yeon, who begged him for this job to become a pro instead of the below-average girl that she really is. On top of that, there is also the return of Han Ji Won, Eun Young's ex-fiance, whom she despises. Ji Won tries to win Eun Young back, but she has her eyes set on Jin Soo.
Slacker's review:
My interest for Coffee House did not grow until I saw some sparks coming from Jin Soo and Eun Young. The front part was more focused on how Seung Yeon became Jin Soo's secretary and how they worked together. I nearly thought they were letting a newbie to lead a drama! Luckily, the plot shifted towards Eun Young and Jin Soo. Coffee House's plot was quite refreshing, and the characters were quite unique as well. The scriptwriter did a good job to keep us intense, as the development was unpredictable and we gotta keep on guessing JS wld end up with who. Luckily, ending did not disappoint me. Haha!
Jin Soo is not the typical handsome guy who acts cool blah blah, and Kang Ji Hwan's acting was very convincing. To me, Jin Soo was always wearing a mask, and only some people can see his true self. As the drama moved on, we got see "peel off" Jin Soo's masks and understand why he behaved in a certain manner. KJH's chemistry with his co-stars were great as well. I loved his intense look when he saw Eun Young. Lots of emotions! With Seung Yeon, the guy was more relaxed and he really enjoyed and laughed very hard when Seung Yeon did silly things. Haha!
Park Shi Yeon has not impressed me much with her acting, but she proved that she cld act here! Her emotions were well portrayed, and perhaps due to Park Yong Ha's demise, PSY looked really languish towards the end of the drama. It must have been hard for her to cope with a good friend's sudden death and to work on a drama at the same time. I liked the storyline b/w EY & JS towards the end, their relationship cld not have a clean break, and it was very clear that they were deeply in love with each other. Lots of eye contact and you cld feel that many words were left unspoken, but they understood each other.
T-ara's leader Eun Jung gave a not-so-bad debut performance. Her acting was quite natural, though a little exaggerating at times. Seung Yeon clearly liked JS too, but she also knew where she stood. SY is a likable character and with her around, the drama's atmosphere wld loosen up.
Jung Woong In was like a mad person in the drama! I really detested Ji Won. Arrogant and horrible fella. I've never seen such a crazy character before! Don't want to remind myself about him...haha!
OST has got a few good tracks, do check them out!

Central & East Java Trip - Day 5

--1st Stop: Singosari Temple--
Candi Singosari, located about 12 kilometres north of Malang, is one of the monuments built in memory of Kertanagara, last king of Singosari, who died when his palace was seized by a usurper in 1292. The temple was partially restored in the 1930's. The roof, in its original state, would have mirrored the cosmic Mt Mahameru of Hindu mythology, four lesser pinnacles on each side surrounding a taller, central 'peak'. Yet it seems that the temple was never completed. The impressive kala heads, highly detailed on the roof, become mere outlines above the entrance and wall niches lower down, showing that the fine carving was executed from the top downwards. For some unknown reasons, the artists appear to have abandoned their work. (credits: eastjava.com)

The temple is quite small. Only one structure standing in the compound.

A statue which was still kept in the temple.
--2nd Stop: Lunch--
Another vegetarian meal. Food was quite delicious, despite looking plain.
--3rd Stop: Madakaripura Waterfall--
Madakaripura waterfall is located in Sapih village, Lombang district, East Java, not far from Mount Bromo area. Madakaripura is a sacred visiting area comprising lines of waterfalls. its reaches a height of 200 meters from the bottom. This waterfall have a related history with a great Prime Ministry, Gajah Mada, who strongly struggled to unify the whole territory of Indonesia under span of control of Majapahit, and said as “the last residence for Gajah Mada”. This spectacular waterfall lies hidden at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of the Tengger range. The water has cascades from the dense forest above. The primary attraction is its natural environment that is encircled by 7 waterfalls and caves. (credits: Wikipedia)
I didn't not know the trek to the waterfall was so "exciting". I've read about walking under waterfalls, but I did not anticipate crossing rivers a few times....haha! This is the first part of the trek which we needed to cross the river. Why? Coz' the pavement was destroyed somehow.
It was difficult trying to cross the river with my flip-flop. In fact, I nearly lost one of my flip-flop for a few times. Lolz~ Gotta thank Anjar, the driver and a few local guys who helped us along the way. (Pic credits: Tuan)
Saw some small waterfalls along the way.
I forgot how many times we needed to cross the river. May be 3-4 times? Anyway, I was bad at balancing....hahaha! (Pic credits: KH)
This was quite scary!!! I gotta climb down that slippery small cliff and there was hardly any flat piece of land for me to step properly. I started to think how I am gg back later on. Hahaha! (Pic credits: KH)
Amazing waterfall.
There were about 3-4 smaller waterfalls here. We actually walked under them in order to see the big waterfall. Luckily E.W brought along our disposable raincoats, or else we wld be totally drenched.
A closer view of the big waterfall. Actually we cld still walk further down, as I believed there were a few more smaller waterfalls. However, we were told that the water wld much deeper (wld reach our waists) if we continue to trek. So, we decided to end our trek here and returned to starting point.
Walking back~~
--4th Stop: Cemara Indah Hotel--
My bermuda shorts was kinda wet, and with our flip-flops, we were going to our final destination of the day - Cemorolawang Village in Mount Bromo area. I thought it was a nice experience to wear so little at a super cold place. I think temp at night was about 10 degrees celcius?
We reached Cemara Indah at 6pm, but the whole area was pitch dark. It was very cold. Sorry to say, I think I am one of the two who brought winter jackets. Hahaha! Tuan said this kind of temp was only in Autumn!!! Terrible~ Can't imagine how cold it wld be during winter!
There were so many kiddos selling winter apparels, and E.W & I bought gloves. Very very cheap ok? May Leng lao shi bought quite a few things, and we gotta stop her from buying more. Lolz~
KH & my room. I've read a lot of reviews about the guest houses in Mount Bromo area. The good ones were expensive and located further away from the crater rim, while the average ones had better location, but with basic facilities. I decided to change the original guest house to Cemara Indah, simply because the toilet facilities in the former was quite bad. Haha! I did not make a wrong choice, Cemara Indah's location was bloody good. Stunning view of Mount Bromo (do check out Day 6 review).
The toilet was nt that bad la...phew~However, it was hard to get hot water. KH and I have to bathe separately in Aunt Jo & E.W's rooms. I heard KH's "screaming" for hot water....hahaha!
Dinner time! The ambience of the restaurant was quite nice, and we were the only Asian group there. Saw another Asian girl chatting away in French (i think). This is my java coffee.
My corn soup. Did not look appetizing here, but it tasted very different from the creamy corn soup we have in SG. I think there were egg & meat inside. Tasted a little salty, but it was quite delicious!
E.W's vegetable soup.
E.W's chap chai main course.
I regretted ordering this Chicken Mushroom main course. Shld have chose something else!!
We returned to our room, and KH tried to snap pics of the super bright full moon. It's a pity that my digi cam cld not capture a gd shot.
Gotta slp with my jacket & gloves. Have to wake up at 2.30am the next day!

Shopping + Marina Bay Sands

--SK Jewellery @ 313 Somerset--
E.W bought an expensive diamond ring for Tuan today. Well, she can only wear in SG la. It's not safe for her to wear it when she returns to Shanghai. Lolz! Don't worry~ Ah Ching is not jealous at all....since she does not wear any rings.
--G2000 @ 313 Somerset--
Happened to pass by the boutique, and found out that they were having end of season sales. Bought a nice top @ 19 bucks...hehe!
--ALT @ Heeren--
Visited the new concept store. You can find many new brands there, though most of them are rather expensive. Can find many beauty products from Japan, Korea & Taiwan too. Wondering if the business is sustainable there, as the crowd was rather small on a weekend.
--Domani @ NAC--
Yes!!! I'm finally back to eat my favourite spaghetti!!!! I think there were small changes in the restaurant la. Menu changed again and they are offering more choices! Very interested in their crab spaghetti. Hehe!
Iced Cafe Mocha. Tasted quite different from the norm. I actually need to add sugar syrup to my Mocha leh.
Tuan & my favourite Sambal Seafood Marinara. Already started to miss it after we finished our meals. Lolz~
Their Tiramisu is back~~~Tasted & looked different from the one I had eaten before. Less liquor now....a little disappointed.
--The Helix & Marina Bay Sands--
Brought Tuan to take a look at the casino and The Helix bridge.
The Singapore Flyer.
Youth Olympic Park.
View of The Helix & MBS Hotel from Youth Olympic Park.
We were super lucky to see fireworks at The Float @ Marina Bay. Did not know what's the occasion for putting fireworks. May be they were testing for YOG's closing ceremony? We also got to see the YOG flame at the floating platform too.
Ah Ching was quite happy as I managed to snap shots of fireworks for the very 1st time!!!

Nice~!

View of The Helix & MBS hotel.
The Float @ Marina Bay.

YOG mascots - Lyo & Merly.
The Fullerton Hotel across the bay.
Night view of the CBD area.
The Shoppes @ MBS.
Saw another entrance of the casino. Hehehe~
