“I’ve got friends that will run through walls
I’ve got friends that will fly once called
When I’ve nowhere left to go
And I need my heroes
I’ve got friends that will run through walls”
– The Script, ‘Run Through Walls’
This weekend was very different to my normal practice of hardcore people avoidance. In fact, I went out of my way to connect with people instead. I headed down to ‘The Big Smoke’ with Sal and Helen, both to catch up with Tory and to see The Script at the O2.
Every time I visit London, I ask myself why I don’t go more often, and realise afresh that I still have a very northern attitude to our capital city. Despite the fact that I now live a maximum of two hours away and can get there ridiculously easily, it’s not somewhere I really go. And if I’m honest, that’s almost entirely due to the odd attitude of disdain I grew up with. The dismissal of an entire metropolis as ‘a waste of time’, ‘too expensive’ and ‘full o’ southerners’.
And yet, there’s a real buzz to the city, a sense of adventure to be found in using the tube (I know, I’m sorry, I’m such a tourist!!) and seeing the sights. Admittedly, being emergency-evacuated from Stratford station, only to be told it was a drill, was somewhat irritating. The idiot group of ‘yoofs’ on our way out of Hainault trying to break into the rear engine of the tube with a piece of broken plastic were tedious. Although, the way they responded to Tor’s teacher voice by ceasing and desisting immediately was very entertaining … especially when they tried to style it out! If I lived there, I’m sure the constant announcements of suspended services and closed lines would be the bane of my life. However, given that in spite of the numerous announcements, not a single train appeared to have actually been cancelled, it was merely city colour to us.
I have to restrain myself from taking a million photos … I do try to pretend I’m not a complete country bumpkin, but I find the sights absolutely fascinating. It’s a very different type of detail to my usual, but I’m constantly being distracted by graffiti, coloured lights, urban trees, and the skyline.
Anyway, The Script were utterly amazing; I had an absolute blast dancing and singing along to all my favourites … and I really do have friends who would run through walls.
As I would for them ❤️
