Odd ball indeed

This (Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge) is a great idea. In fact, Cee you are kind of a great idea “generator” and I appreciate the creativity that you have demonstrated in what you are doing through your website (and, of course, in your photos too).

Here is an “Odd Ball” for the Week 9 challenge, both literally and metaphorically. I took this photo a few years ago, shortly after I had purchased a new macro lens. In this particular case, I was photographing a rock in our backyard. The rock had lots of crocks and crannies with plenty of moss growing on it. At the macro scale, the rock, which is about 2 x 2 x 2 appeared to have caves with dead trees (actually little twigs) scattered about. Other than the moss, the largest living thing was a pretty new four-leaf clover  that stood roughly an inch tall. For perspective, one of the leaves of that clover is in the upper right hand corner of this photo. The odd ball here is what sits below the clover leaf. This part of the photo, even with the macro lens was so small that I did not even notice it when I took the original group of pictures and first looked at the results. I still can’t say for sure what the critter is or what it is sitting on – one person suggested a drop of water. The only thing I can say with a little confidence is that this is an odd ball photo and I hope you enjoy it.

Wow. Thanks for this challenge. Sometimes I can’t think of a thing that I can use for a challenge and don’t have time to take the right photo, but this week’s “Sunday Stills Challenge: F is for …” has delivered a market basket of choices of photos containing or about words beginning with “F”. So here we go:

First, let’s look at FLIGHT. For those of us who love nature we have a bald eagle flying down the Wisconsin River Valley.

If you prefer mechanized and somewhat crazy acrobatic flight, you have the Royal Canadian Snowbirds and their jets:

F is for Flight 1

Taking wing from the freedom of flight, we enter the world of fences. Here we have a photo of the fence around the governor’s mansion in Wisconsin. And talk about luck, the photo shows the fenced-in mansion in the fog thus scoring a “twofer” in the world of photo challenges.

I have hundreds of flower photos but I feel confident that such photos will be fertile ground for responses to the challenge so I am skipping these. Rather, I will finish with a photo of a local fireworks display (“Fireworks on the 4th,”another “twofer”) followed natural “fireworks” of the type that come with the changes of the season in one of my favorite times of the year: Fall.

Here are three more photos of bald eagles from my recent trip to photograph them on the Wisconsin River.

In the first photo, a mature bald eagle (mom or dad?) watches while two immature eagles appear to be engaged in some type of dominance play.

In the photo below, the bald eagle has just touched the water a few feet from the end of the ice that extends from shore in order to pluck a fish from the river.  A duck swimming by observes the moment. This photo required some digital manipulation because it was just a small portion of the original image and it was a little pout of focus. During that process I decided to make it more blue than it actually was in the original photo.

In the third photo, an immature bald eagle flies across the Wisconsin River.

Lake Michigan Sunset

I had been walking around the shore of Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin for about an hour as the sunset approached. While I got better photos of the sun, they lacked the one thing this photo has – foreground interest. I recall that I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted this man watching the sunset. He adds quite a bit of appeal to the photo. I took this several years ago and had forgotten about it until my photo mining project helped me to rediscover it.

Sparkle

I was feeling like I needed a little something extra in my day today and this photo of a  daylily came to mind. I hope it brings a little sunshine into your life, as it did into mine.
