The Issue

The Eaton Fire has devastated the community of Altadena, burning thousands of acres, destroying homes, displacing families, and tragically taking lives. One of the primary causes of wildfires in California is downed power lines, which ignite fires that quickly spread in dry conditions. The residents of Altadena cannot afford to endure another preventable tragedy.

We, the undersigned, demand that Southern California Edison (SCE) take immediate action to bury power lines in Altadena and other high-risk areas to prevent future wildfires. As our community begins the long and painful process of rebuilding, we must ensure that we rebuild safely and responsibly to protect lives and property for future generations.

Downed Power Lines Are a Major Fire Hazard
Numerous California wildfires, including the devastating Paradise Camp Fire in 2018, have been sparked by downed power lines. Burying power lines is a proven method to reduce the risk of wildfires caused by electrical infrastructure.

Burying Power Lines Is a Long-Term Investment
While the upfront cost of burying power lines is significant, it is far less than the economic and emotional toll of wildfire recovery. Protecting communities from wildfires is an investment in the safety, stability, and future of our towns and cities.

Communities Should Not Have to Rebuild in Fear
As Altadena residents begin the process of rebuilding homes and businesses destroyed by the Eaton Fire, they deserve to feel safe. We cannot allow our community to live in fear of future wildfires caused by outdated infrastructure.

Our Demands to Southern California Edison (SCE)

We call on SCE to:

1. Immediately begin the process of undergrounding power lines in Altadena and other high-risk areas.
2. Work with the community to create a clear, transparent timeline for burying power lines.
3. Invest in fire prevention measures and infrastructure upgrades to prevent future disasters.
4. The time to act is now. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and more destructive. Communities like Altadena cannot wait for the next disaster to take action.

We must hold utility companies accountable for investing in safer infrastructure to protect lives, homes, and the environment.

Join us in demanding that SCE prioritize wildfire prevention and bury power lines to ensure the safety of Altadena and beyond.
