Urge the British Museum to Return the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

The Issue

As an ardent lover of history, I regard the possession and preservation of cultural artefacts as an important aspect of honoring and understanding our past. It is with this conviction that I am launching this petition to urge the British Museum to return the Benin Bronzes, a collection of historic artefacts of immense cultural value, back to their rightful owners, the Nigerian government.

The Benin Bronzes, first looted during the Punitive Expedition in 1897, have had a contentious history. Despite being significant representations of the sophisticated Court of Benin, these intricate metal plaques now reside thousands of miles away from their origin in the British Museum. Today, Nigeria is working tirelessly towards the return of these artifacts, backed by its National Commission for Museums and Monuments.

I firmly believe that countries should possess their historical artefacts. These objects are not merely decorative items, they are sacred symbols of a people's collective memory and identity. They tell stories that are best perceived and interpreted within their cultural context. As indicated by the University of Aberdeen's decision to return a Benin Bronze to Nigeria in March 2021, there is a growing global recognition of the ethical dimensions of cultural heritage repatriation.

It's time for the British Museum to enter talks about the permanent repatriation of the Benin Bronzes. This would not only play a crucial role in righting historical wrongs, but also enrich the understanding of these treasures within their true home, their original cultural milieu.

Join me in this movement. Sign this petition to assert that cultural heritage belongs to its people, and to urge the British Museum to return the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
