fried chicken & whiskey buttermilk pie at hill country chicken

As a last dinner of sorts prior to her moving to London, my friend Anna and I made plans to go to Hill Country Chicken, a spot she recommended and that I’d been meaning to try for quite some time. The atmosphere is very casual – no table service. Instead, you walk up to the display counter, order, and then seat yourself.

When I walked in, I thought it was interesting to see that you could either order set dinners or order by the piece. Smart – so not hungry? Grab a chicken breast and a side, and you’re done. And that’s exactly what I did. I added their “blistered corn salad”, which was a spicy flavorful take on corn salad. And of course, I had to get one of their buttermilk biscuits, which was big, flaky, and fluffy – an essential addition to the meal.

And with so many options in their display, dessert was a must try. They have certain daily offerings as well as daily specials, one of which this day was their margarita pie with a pretzel crust.

How to decide?!?

And so much more!

And so much more!

I finally decided on the banana cream pie and the whiskey buttermilk pie. I couldn’t resist the banana cream pie and it’s awesome whipped cream topping – and it didn’t disappoint. The topping was vanilla bean flavored. If someone wanted to take vanilla bean ice cream and make it into a topping, this is what it would be. So good. And the filling was just slightly sweet and creamy. Perfect.

I tried a bite of the margarita pie, which was actually quite good. It was slightly less tart than a key lime pie and definitely tasted more like a margarita. And the pretzel crust was a nice touch. I’d be curious to see that with other desserts, but it worked well as another tie in to your traditional margarita. The whiskey buttermilk pie was also quite good. I usually like buttermilk pie just fine, but sometimes it seems a tad bland and lacking something. In this case, the whiskey brought that necessary something. Don’t like whiskey? Then this is not the option for you. I, on the other hand, really enjoyed it.

And next time, I already know what I’ll be trying… one of the worker’s recommended it as their most popular, but I couldn’t bring myself to choose it over so many other Southern staples. But next time, for sure.

classy comfort food at @melt_shop

It was a rainy day. I had to go over into Midtown for a midday doctor’s appointment, and I’d just gotten some bad news. Walking down Lexington Avenue with tears streaming down ones face in the rain could be classified as not the brightest of days. Maybe I’m the only one, but there are certain foods I automatically associate with bummer days where you need a bit of cheering up. While some would have decided a puddle hopping day was one to skip the restaurant where you have to order from a window, you standing on the outside waiting for your food, I said no. It was so a grilled cheese day and I opted to finally make my way to Melt Shop.

I was torn as to what to order. My eyes were drawn first to the aged cheddar with maple glazed bacon on sourdough. Kind of like a dressy grilled cheese, because bacon’s like adding a suit jacket. Always makes everything fancier. I was also eying the buttermilk-fried chicken with jalepeno jack cheese, red cabbage slaw, and melt sauce on country white. Or maybe even the gruyere with smoked ham, pickled red onions, and whole grain mustard on light rye.

I finally decided those would be contenders for my next visit, as, oh yes, there will be another one for sure. Instead, I went with what I felt like was a more classic first selection – the triple three cheese melt. It was comprised of gruyere, fontina, and goat cheese along with homemade roasted tomatoes on sourdough bread. It was perfect. I don’t like it when the cheese comes out in three distinct layers. Instead, it was perfectly melted into the sandwich, where you could taste the flavors but one would quickly flow into the other. Just right. The bread was fresh and noticeable, yet not overpowering.

And, of course, I had to try the tater tots. The TOTS! All caps worthy, in my opinion. They were very fresh and not overly greasy. They were topped with a light sprinkling of pesto and served with what they refer to as melt sauce. It made me think of Shake Shack’s Shack Sauce, although I’m sure each would say they do not favor. Whatever. They surely both have some sort of mayo base, some sort of spicy seasoning, and something that is ketchup-y. And somehow even though I hate mayo, I loved this. So good. Usually I’ll skip fries, tots, whatnot. Just not necessary. Although here? My vote is essential.

La Vuelta - Long Island City

I realized I’d forgotten my goal to continue exploring Long Island City, which was especially apparent as I saw my last LIC-related review, Five Star Punjabi, was back in August 2009. Oooops. I came across information about La Vuelta online, a restaurant featuring a mix of the staples of Latin American cuisine. The menu ranges from basics like quesadillas, empanadas, and skirt steak to less standard offerings such as paella, an ancho buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, and tamarind glazed chorizo.
