All Support To: ‘The People vs Kinder Morgan’

What’s at Stake

The Kinder Morgan pipeline and tanker project poses unacceptable risks. Whether it’s oil spills that can’t be cleaned up, orcas that will become extinct,  or increasing carbon emissions in the age of runaway climate change, an approval of this project is the wrong direction for our region and our world. In an era of reconciliation, we cannot allow our government to run roughshod over First Nations rights.

Kinder Morgan was approved without B.C.’s consent.

59 First Nations including almost every coastal nation directly impacted by tanker traffic, 21 BC municipalities including Vancouver, North Vancouver, Victoria, and Burnaby, and over 210,000 citizens have signed petitions opposing the pipeline and tanker project.

The Tsleil-Waututh and other coastal First Nations are poised to launch court challenges. We know from experience in stopping the Enbridge pipeline that defending Indigenous rights in court is a strategic choke point for such projects.

In order to prepare  to take their opposition to the pipeline project to the courts, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation need an initial $50k.

We won’t let this get built. Help us fundraise so First Nations can stop Kinder Morgan in the courts.

‘Gray Days’ a poem by Fauzia Rafique

Each gray
day
reveals strong
bright shades of green
to occupy the fore
front of my vision.

Standing tall
hanging low
trailing
below.

Winter after
winter
the undying green
keeps shinning
sprouting
from the seeds
thrown by the
coast
salish people
tending
the love
of this land.

We Can’t Drink Tar Sands Oil‏

We know that tar sands oil is the dirtiest fuel in the world, and that tar sands projects create toxic lakes filled with cancer causing heavy metals and neurotoxins.1 We also know that the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline would cross pristine land in six states and put almost 30 percent of our country’s agricultural water at risk of contamination.2

But a new report reaffirms that the corrosive nature of tar sands oil will increase risk of spills to a degree not seen in conventional oil pipelines.

Write a letter to the editor of your local paper and help us spread the word about the dangers posed by new tar sands pipelines.

The Sierra Club, in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council, the National Wildlife Federation, and Pipeline Safety Trust, is releasing a report this week that shows transporting tar sands oil is much more dangerous than transporting traditional oil.3

Why? Because tar sands oil is more corrosive than traditional crude oil, and its thicker nature means increased heat and pressure are needed to force it through a pipe, making ruptures and spills more likely.

We cannot allow regulators to treat tar sands oil the same as regular crude oil — write a letter to the editor today.

Despite the new risks posed by tar sands crude, American regulators have not created specific safeguards to protect communities along pipeline routes from spills and contamination.

Before we agree to transport tar sands oil across the Midwest, we need to make sure it’s not going to destroy our water and farmland.

The American people deserve a voice before new tar sands pipelines are approved — write a letter and make your voice heard.

A New Year of Hope for Animals
By popular demand, it’s back and better than ever! Care2 is proud to announce our second America’s Favorite Animal Shelter contest: “A New Year of Hope for Animals.”

As the economic crisis worsens and pet abandonment rates grow, Care2 and Adopt-a-Pet.com are raising the stakes; Care2 will award $25,000 to 29 local animal rescue groups and shelters across the US and Canada. The top 20 vote-getting groups will win prizes, giving a greater number of deserving groups a chance to win, and every week a randomly-selected group will win a much-needed $500 prize.

Important note: Now, animal rescues and shelters in the U.S. AND Canada are eligible to win, including groups that help birds, rabbits, horses, and animals other than cats and dogs.

How the contest works
Anyone can visit Care2.com/animalsheltercontest and select their favorite animal shelter or rescue group. Then, you can tell neighbors and friends to do the same! The shelter or rescue group with the most votes wins $10,000.

In addition to the grand prize:
– Second and third place winners will each receive $1,000. The groups that place 4th through 20th will each win $500.
– Every week, a randomly selected participating group (five or more votes that week) will win $500.
– The 20 contest participants who recruit the most friends to vote for their favorite shelter will receive a $50 gift certificate for pet products as special thank-you gifts.

How to get a group registered for the contest
All participating animal shelters and rescue groups are part of the Adopt-a-Pet.com network. If you want to support a shelter or rescue group that you do not currently see on our contest site, please have a representative of that organization register their group with Adopt-a-Pet.com here: adoptapet.com

It’s simple and approval only takes about 24 hours on average. So send your group’s representative to Adopt-a-Pet.com’s registration form. Once your favorite group has been added to the database, you can come back to vote!
