Daylight, off buttons, & Time-out chairs

It’s Sunday, I’ve been up for hours, the coffee’s hot ~ here are 5 randoms from my world.

1 ) Daylight is lingering longer .. anyone else notice it? We live in the western-most part of the Eastern time zone, and our state participates in that stupid “daylight savings time,” ugh. Lately, 5pm has arrived and it’s no longer as dark as a coal chute. Bonus – January’s bitter cold brought us more sunshine than “normal,” I’ll take it!

2 ) I’ve continued my daily reading habit that started during our multi-year C-vid lockdowns (when I turned off the news and dove into books. For the record, I am up-to-date and well-informed, but via reading, not pundits, ahh!) Anyways .. Christmas Amazon e-gifts were immediately cashed in for a host of Kindle e-books. Of the 10 books devoured in January, these are two I still think about: “The lies they told,” by Ellen Marie Wiseman and “Carnegie’s Maid” by Marie Benedict.

3 ) I’m enrolled in a year-long writing/self-discovery class. Once a month a group of women, including me, meet virtually where our facilitator leads us through prompts, discussions, follow-ups and assignments. In addition to morning prayer/journaling, I’ve added in this juicy-joy-filled creative/freestyle writing, and I’m loving it! Some questions or prompts are more enjoyable and sometimes more difficult than others, and that’s entirely the point. I love to push my boundaries, challenge my habits, and learn new things.

4 ) Drifting snow & freezing rain for weeks at a time have me daydreaming of beach days, swimming in an oceanfront pool, savoring fresh seafood caught in the Gulf, and going to bed sun-kissed and happy. I aim to plan another getaway with my sister this Spring. While our trips together are always enjoyable, we’ve agreed that our Florida beach trip last year was one of our most relaxing and delightful. Adult time-out chair, STAT!

5 ) I go back to this over & over: Turn it off. Read. Get outside. Volunteer. Learn a new skill. Life is SO much better without a constant negative narrative blaring at me! Want to learn or do something new but not sure where to start? Try this – https://www.eventbrite.com/ <– you can find classes, events, conferences, outings, and AND many are free 🙂 – you’re welcome.

How about you? Need an adult time-out chair? What habit do you find particularly restorative?

14, winter & one-night stands

It’s been bitterly cold with plenty of ice, snow and artic winds here in the Midwest (and, in MUCH of the country!) None of this has been friendly to my walks. I’d like to say I’m walking inside but I’m not; I move, stretch & stand as much as possible, but days happen where driving, working and later, reading at night consume me, and I’m just less active in winter than in summer/spring/fall. Ice – and the fear of falling / injuries – will do that to you.

A few months ago, Word Press reminded me of a milestone: 14 years of blogging! (first post here!) I fell away from a regular writing habit a while back – life/work/other things/lack of interest took priority. And that’s ok. I’m at the age where I no longer “should” on myself. (Shoulda done this, shoulda done that, that’s enough of that). But still, 14 years! I’m glad I started and yes, I’ll continue but now, I’ll do it as the mood “strikes.” It struck today.

Looking around, I’ve noticed something: we (Hubbs and I) actively lean into the pause that winter brings. He’s got his sports, politics and current events – I have my work, books, and church; we both have our family, friends and other things going on to keep us as engaged as we want to be. I enjoy this leaning business and the contentment it’s brought. Having joined and becoming active in my church gave me the community I longed for. I can see now how much I missed being part of one, and how all of these experiences have rounded out the edges.

After church today, I popped a ham, a big dish of scalloped potatoes and, separately, a green bean casserole into the oven to cook slowly on a lower heat; the house is cozy, the smells amazing. Sunshine sparkles on the snowbank outside my window, and I’m right where I need to be.

This made me laugh, and I hope it does you, too. Have a great week!

2024: Mid-way musings

It’s officially mid-year; we’re busy finalizing 2025 work goals and budgets ~ leaders are talking targets and reviews. Well, given that, here’s my random mid-year recap:

1 ) Pace cars vs. Packs: At work, each team is given metrics we’re measured against and my team &I are in the lead. Why? I’d rather be the pace car than the pack, choking down fumes. Zoom Zoom!

Outta my way, peeps, I’ve got places to be!

2 ) Throwbacks: Sorting through old photos, I came across this ’90s gem, taken on a camera using real film:

That’s me in the NY Harbor w/ the Twin Towers in the background. Surreal.
An Emjayandthem (C) photo

3 ) Ch-ch-changes: Several of my long-term colleagues recently retired or otherwise left the company; it’s weird to be one of the “last men standing,” (ahem, women). I do think about retirement, as it’s coming sooner than not; I view (and hope) retirement will be an extension of my weekends – daily walks, daily reading, cooking, Church, time with Hubbs, kids/grands, friends, and pets – and free time to pursue interests I’ve not had time for. I’ve had a wonderful career and many adventures, and am thankful for all of it. But there are also parts I can’t wait to leave behind (calls, video calls, and more calls, blah).

4 ) Grown-up stuff – This week, Hubbs & I formalized – and paid for – our funerals. Just typing that is sobering. Here’s the thing: he’s retired, I’m working, so why not lock in costs now? So we did. What’s not surprising is this: while we grew up in two different countries, we share the same values. We both chose cremation, a time of visitation, a Church funeral with a “church lady” luncheon after. We own a plot in the family cemetery that the two of us will share when the time comes. One less thing for our boys to worry about; pre-planning can help eliminate confusion and strife while grieving. And, surprisingly, neither of us were creeped out by the action; instead we feel relief.

5 ) Keep it coming, Love: Finally, at the top of my walking playlist is this song, “Keep it coming, Love” by K.C. and the Sunshine band. It’s a fun, fast-paced song that I walk briskly to. I’m sure I get some looks as I saunter along but who cares? So fun! We saw them in concert years ago; I never sat down once. Whee!

And how was your week? Any ch-ch-changes coming your way?

1/24th of your day

Earlier this week I returned from vacation, a total of 9 business days off, nearly 2 full weeks, and man-o-man, that was needed. My sister and I enjoyed a most excellent adventure wherein we:

  • Laughed
  • Slept in
  • Stretched, and walked
  • Dined out
  • Sang
  • Danced
  • Adventured
  • Read
  • Laughed some more
  • Slept in
  • Dined out again
  • Sang
  • Danced and
  • laughed more.

Self-maintenance: 1 hour or 1/24th of your day should be spent doing something restorative, something you enjoy. Try it and imagine giving the world the best of you instead of what’s left of you.

Ahhh….when’s the last time you took a break? What did you learn?

The slowing down

Yesterday youngest boy and I were chatting when our conversation swung to our mutual love of the changing seasons — we discussed what we loved about all of them: the bright colors and sunshine in Spring, the long, warm and happy days of summer, rich colors and family campfires in Fall, and being cozy in winter. While many around us say they dread the coming winter, his comment stuck with me, “I love the slowing down of winter; it forces me to rest and prepare for what’s next.”

And that got me thinking: If I experienced the same views every day, would I appreciate them as I do? No, I don’t think I would. The changing seasons give me reason to look up, take a breath, look around, smell, savor, bundle up, peel off, and enjoy. Seasons remind me that while I am busy doing “life,” life is passing, and not to let it pass me by. Winter does force a slowdown in most things – travel, outings, meetings, social events. It frees up time to do projects, reorganizing, or nothing at all.

I get it, kid. I love the slowing down of winter, too. You?

Random 5 downloads- Apples, goats, boats, and rivers

Organizing electronic records on my computer recently I reviewed files or images downloaded – they serve as a testament to my musings, moods and wanderings. And since this is a random 5 post, here are 5 random downloads:

And there you have it, folks — chaos is everywhere. I go out, I “deal,” and then I retreat.

What do your downloads reveal to you?

Soul support, Sam Hell, and steering the river

In a noisy world, how do you nurture your soul?

Bubble baths? Long walks? Prayer? Honey-do lists? Sweat & exercise? Loud music? Chocolate? Meditation and quiet? What’s your go-to? I have many, and am grateful for them all.

  1. Reading
  2. Walking / Time in Prayer
  3. Music / Singing / Dancing
  4. Cooking /Creating /Organizing
  5. Journaling / dreaming / discovering

With the turn of each season, I get itchy; I can feel something coming, just out of reach. Trees are starting to turn, mornings are a bit darker, and the evening air has a bite to it.

Work continues at a crazy, stupid-busy pace. It’s a daily pie-eating contest and 1st prize is … more pie. So many have left, “peace out, not for me,” they said. I’ve stayed. Somedays I wonder if I can. But I say the same thing year after year: I still enjoy the work and do my best to survive the chaos created by others, and the stress that comes along with it. Walking/Prayer/Reading/Music/Cooking nourish my soul.

What if we fed our souls first and then shared what’s left, instead of the reverse? Hmm, what a concept.

With 64 books read YTD, I don’t remember them all, but this one, this one, this one .. this one will stay with me a long time. This one I will read again.

Today is a beautiful September Saturday – full of promise.

I don’t know about you I’m moseying, walking, cooking, baking, stretching, singing, reading, and resting. I’m feeding my soul! Lastly, I leave you with this, which serves as a wonderful reminder for me:

  • Don’t try to steer the river. Deepak Chopra

In Season

Yesterday I bought these at a Centennial Farm near me. $42 for 8 quarts, amazing!

I can’t even tell you how good these strawberries are! How luscious, sweet and flavorful. My car smelled like a Strawberry Shortcake on wheels. As I washed the berries and removed tops, I ate 2 for every 6 washed. So. Good! I kept some sliced berries in the fridge to enjoy this week and the rest I froze for later desserts.

Speaking of desserts, this is a must try – I made it last year for our Fourth of July celebration with, you guessed it, fresh strawberries and it was a hit. Our daughter-in-law, between bites and and oohs and ahhs, pronounced it her all-time favorite ever dessert. “If you could make this every year for the rest of my life I’d be good with that.” Since we both have birthdays this week, and are celebrating with a family gathering next weekend, I’m making it again, and every year for the rest of my life, too. 😉

** Strawberry Dream-Cake **

  • 1 box Vanilla Cake Mix
  • 8 tbsp Butter melted
  • 2 cans Strawberry Pie Filling
  • 1 – 8 oz Whipped Cream Cheese ( I use 1 1/2 containers so 12 oz total)

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9×13 cake pan.
  • Spread both cans of pie filling in the bottom of the pan.
  • Add dollops of cream cheese on top of the pie filling.
  • In a mixing bowl, pour melted butter over cake mix and combine to make a crumble.
  • Sprinkle crumble over the strawberry/cream cheese layers.
  • Bake for 30 minutes ~ until the crumbs are golden brown.
  • Allow to cool – this dessert is best served cold.

I make this a day ahead, and serve with fresh Whipped Cream (beat whipping cream with sugar until peaks form) and fresh strawberries on top. (or partially frozen). Delicious – and in season!

Add to that – another thing in season is my annual week off for my birthday which starts today. I used to take at least the day off; as I’ve gotten older, I take the week. There’s something so decadent about a week off in summer. Ok, to be honest, anytime! I’ve resisted filling every day with “stuff” to do. So far a mostly blank calendar is giving me joy!

What’s in season where you are?

What do you feel overdue for?

Random 5 Sunday ~ Coffee, noise and therapy

Good morning, it’s cold, but the sun is out, coffee tastes good and it’s time for 5 random observations from my little part of the world. Here we go.

1 Laughed out loud at this one.

2 This image gave me pause, ooh the possibilities! I’d pull the ramp, shut the doors and luxuriate in reading and rockin’ on the water……….. ahh.

3 I work with some great people but some of them talk-talk-talk. My experience? Loudness may dominate, but pity the fool who confuses politeness with weakness.

4 Leading another high-level, high-profile (high stress) work project, this image resonated. Breathe, pace myself, breathe. Carry on and live to share the testimony!

5 In my professional role, I enjoy my road trips to new-to-me places, presenting to & engaging with others. Taking part in roundtable discussions, meet & greets, sharing information /updates. But I am equally grateful for time in the car; time to savor quiet, learn from a podcast or crank favorite songs and sing along at the top of my lungs.

Therapy, indeed. Simple, cheap, effective.

How about you? Does it seem like the world has gotten louder? What is your form of simple/cheap therapy?

Winter storms, winter breaks, and not talking

Winter break – that magical, mystical time between holidays when schools are closed, work slows and I can think, dream, breathe and relax. This Christmas Winter Storm Elliott shut down most of North America, changed travel plans and lives, some tragically.

When did we start naming winter storms?

I thought we only did that for Hurricanes. Winter Storm Elliott. Sheesh.

Makes me think of Elliott, our school bus driver; Elliott carried my sister on and off the bus after she broke her leg. Elliott would turn the bus around if we forgot something important, like a slipper or class project. Elliott would loft a stern look and a raised eyebrow at the “big kids” in the back and that was enough to settle them down. Elliott was a constant from my childhood. He’s a local farmer who loves a fast Polka, his wife & family, curling and a good pie. I’ll bet he wonders about winter storms being named, too.

Thinking ahead to 2023, and dreaming up new goals, I was gob smacked by something: a lack of magazines. I usually buy a stack of magazines every December as I prepare to create a new Vision Board. There aren’t many now. A few collectible types but not the “usual.” I guess everything is virtual now. Sad.

Some of my past vision boards

Enjoying my time off work with few plans except reading, walking, sleeping, and not talking much. My professional role is verbal, with so many calls all day, every day. Just a few days of NOT talking gives me a powerful reset.

A new year is upon us. I’m leaning in, looking forward, dreaming new dreams and setting new goals.

I’m cleaning out the clutter, giving thanks for the good, releasing habits, clothes and people that no longer fit.

You?

Good hoarding

This image had me snorting with laughter – this is SO me!

I call this “good hoarding,” — You?

Truth!

Recently a colleague asked about retirement plans ~ again, I laughed — “not anytime soon,” I replied. She’s ahead of me by a few years and “the end is in sight.” Geez, that sounds so depressing. Given my job, and the demand it entails, I know it will be hard to just “stop” when the time comes — and there certainly are things I dream of stopping – and adopting. Including:

NO:

  • alarms
  • reminders
  • zoom / webex / teams or conference calls
  • spreadsheets, PowerPoints, Smartsheets, or trackers
  • huddles, conferences or skull sessions

PLENTY OF:

  • Walks
  • Fresh Air
  • Books
  • Volunteering
  • Days at the beach
  • Sunshine
  • Family
  • Kids
  • Grandkids
  • Grand-dogs
  • And not necessarily in that order

Come to think of it, I guess I do have retirement “plans” – just not a timeline 🙂

How about you? What do your “plans” include?

Random 5 Writings – Prompts, stuff, books and ice

It’s a blustery, snowy January Saturday ~ we’re on the downward slide now, 57 days until Spring. Not that I’m counting. Time for 5 Random things from my world. Ready? Let’s go.

1 Tidying up: Having to stay inside has me cleaning “stuff” out. I don’t know about you, but I just keep too much. I was raised by (wonderful) Depression-era parents and grew up hearing, “You might need that.” As a result, I keep way more than I need … or will ever use. But it’s not all their doing, because some of the “pile” is due to NOT sorting through what I have before buying more! I spent the better part of today cleaning, decluttering and reorganizing the bathroom storage/linen closet. I tossed multiple jars with “just a little” left, kept duplicates of products I like, and threw away old/outdated stuff I don’t use anymore. 2 garden-sized trash bags full gone. Had a few moments like this:

2 Ice, Ice baby – I love to walk outside every day. It’s my happy place, my meditative space, one I fiercely protect. Unless I can’t b/c of ice. boo! 😦 I can take the wind, rain, and snow. But not ice. There’s no need to be down with a broken appendage several miles from home. C’mon Spring 🙂 57 days.

About right!

3 Reading. In 2020 I read 65 books, 82 in 2021. My goal is 100, and, as of today, I’m at 3. New books wait for me, like kids who paused the game and are waiting for me to join. I’ll get there. Work and other priorities are in the lead right now. ~ Sigh.

4 Prompts. I’m taking a 12-week creative writing course and loving it. What I enjoy the most are the prompts. Prompts take me right back to grade school and anticipating what “free” writing prompt our teacher would give us. Love! This week I’ve enjoyed prompts about childhood, i.e. list 5 things you were good at as a child, 5 foods you loved to eat as a child, 5 games you loved to play as a child. Wanna know a secret? Of the 5 foods I loved then I still enjoy today: popcorn, black licorice, strawberry shortcake, dill pickles and Turkey dinner. Yum!

Totally done this. Google.images.com

5 Books – I was sorting through my books and packed a box to let go. Books are my friends, and it’s hard to see them go. The ones leaving fall into 2 categories: a) gifted books I’ll never read, b) read already and won’t again. The only book I’ve ever thrown out was written by Governor Cuomo (Perhaps you have heard of the hideously cruel egomaniac who ordered CVID positive patients into Nursing homes, thereby contributing to the death of thousands?). I was gifted that book by someone who admired Sir Fakery. Why they thought I would like it is beyond me. Yes indeed I tossed it, but not before pouring bacon grease all over it. Yeah, I might have some strong feelings about that creep.

Isn’t this a dreamy reading space?

Your turn ~

  1. What trends do you notice in your “stuff?”
  2. Read any good books lately? Do tell!
  3. Share five foods you loved as a child.
