We have all hear people talking about ….waiting for their ship to come in…and maybe at times…we have wished that ours would come in as well.
Let’s think about it…a ship… is a large boat . ..that I for one… have never seen resting on a shore.
You may be thinking…but cruise ships come in to shore? right?….Not really. They come in to docks..(.not the shore)…. docks that have been specially built for them.
So I suppose that means …if you sit on shore and wait for it…you might be sitting there a very long time…unless there is a natural disaster that forces it to crash on the shore…
Your ship might come in but it will be damaged and broken …not exactly what you had in mind.
So I suppose.. if your ship doesn’t come in… swimming out to it would be in order…..Don’t know how to swim??…and the thought of learning to is frightening? ….you may have to just start building that long dock.
So… if sitting and watching…doesn’t bring in your ship….and you can’t swim or build…
you might have to reconsider the ship idea…
and settle for something a little smaller.
I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.

I have spent hours on our lake waters the past three years…and each year I am amazed by the changes of the landscape and the wildlife that find a home within. However…. …Where are all the ducks, geese, small wading birds and muskrat??? Why would there be many one year and almost none the next???
The only thing that comes to mind is the differing water levels each year. This year the lake water were extremely high…and moving too fast….could that be the reason???
Was there no place for nesting to take place?? I miss watching the young grow up…and looking forward to finding them each time I visit the lake.
However…the Turtles…the beautiful painted turtles seem to be a constant in the landscape…everyday around 10 am.
I love to float beside them …near the reeds…as they hug a piece of driftwood and raise the heads toward the sun in unison, is always a special moment.
For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.
Yes…I am missing something this summer…. the creatures …however…I have spent more time observing the trees and the plants as they grow and change during the summer…more than ever before. I have observed the changing of the shores…how the rain , sun and wind affect the growth, in and around the waters edge… how the water surface explodes some days with new growth…and how it can visually change from being glasslike in one spot yet choppy with waves in another.
Ahhhh…change. Mother Nature seems to embrace it and accept the consequences .
Now…if only I could be as flexible as she.

“I’m drawn to places that beguile and inspire, sedate and stir, places where, for a few blissful moments I loosen my death grip on life, and can breathe again. It turns out these destinations have a name:
thin places.”
Eric Weiner

It was not until a few years ago , when my sister told me about her thin place,…that I first heard this term.
She shared with me…a favorite beach she likes to spend time at….where wild horses can be seen running on the sand… a location she called her thin place.
I immediately wondered….what is it that makes a place… thin….how does a person know if they have ever been ….to a thin place??
Is it a place where the… spiritual…the physical ….the mental….and the natural….have a fine line between them?..
when they are indistinguishable from one another???
Is a thin place….an actual physical location???…or is it a state of mind???
Some have said that a Thin Place… cannot be described with words.
So that got me to wondering….have I ever found myself in a thin place?
…the first thing that came to mind was…
my kayak… paddling all alone…. on the lake or down the creek in my kayak…
Yes…I do believe that is MY thin place.
A place where I can be alone but never feel alone….where my mind can breath and my body relax… where life as it is ….seems to disappear.
Perhaps that is why I look so forward to the end of a long cold Canadian winter… a chance to once again….return to that place…my Thin Place.
Have you ever been there?
Have you found your….
Thin Place???

Hope is the state which promotes the belief
in a good outcome related to
events and circumstances in one’s life..
Think about it for a minute….unconciously we are all… hoping…hoping everyday…all the time without even thinking….. hoping that it will be sunny…hoping that we get to work on time…hoping the traffic light does not turn red….hoping you will receive an email from a friend….and the list could go on and on. We hope all the time.
There are of course… times when hoping is what helps us to get through a tough day or a difficult time and is more conscious thought.
It is at those moments when having hope is what gets us through the day.
Hope, like the gleaming taper’s light,
adorns and cheers our way;
and still, as darker grows the night,
Emits a brighter ray.
[Oliver Goldsmith]
Now… I am the first to say that, by just hoping ,we cannot make sure a good outcome to occur…however…it can sure make you feel better…more positive about the possible future…
So if all of this is true…why would we ever, ever want to…TAKE AWAY ANOTHER PERSON’S HOPE?
Oh no..!!!!! Makes me wonder.. have I ever taken away someone’s hope??

So….here we all are….looking forward to another year…. !!! Will it be full of things that never were????
For me….for the past 3 years….I have made and kept a New Year’s resolution… I know that most people say….Bah, Humbug….to any kind of resolutions…We have all made them and tried our best to keep them with little or no success…so why bother???….Well…I have come up with a way to be able to make and keep a resolution….easily……The trick is to decide on a change that adds to your life….not one that causes stress
For example….one year I vowed to buy only vine ripened tomatoes when available….nothing less….then there was the NOT turning on the radio in the car unless driving more than 16 kms….how nice and quiet my rides were….and last year I decided to ….around the first of each month…to go clothes shopping for an item or two….to help update my shabby wardrobe. Now you must admit…..very easy resolutions to make….and follow through on. Not a bit of stress involved ….and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of each year. And these resolutions I have continued to carrry on till the present!!!!!
So….now comes the difficult part….coming up with a new resolution for 2013…..but thanks to some friends of mine….on New Year/s eve….we did some brainstorming on possible ideas for resolutions…..such as….
- Once a month…..do a first….maybe trying a new food….or…buying a new kind of soap or shampoo ….or….watching a new tv show…or…how about just brushing your teeth with your other hand…or maybe going into a store you have never visited ….pay for a stranger’s coffee …etc. etc…!!!
- Once a month….Taking one item out of my freezer downstairs and using it….(I keep putting items in but never take them out) so it might be an adventure for me
I am feeling that the freezer idea will be it for me in 2013 ….I think once a month ….would be a good way to go this year…..Now I am a bit excited to find out what is lurking in that freezer downstairs. ….I am just going to have to come up with a date to start…..hmmmm….I suppose if I do it sometime during the first week of each month….will be it…..Hmmmm…although the thought of firsts really intrigues me …..could I maybe….do both…????
Could this is be a gentle way to step out????

Expectations
looking forward to…anticipation a looking for as due, proper, or necessary thing looked forward to…a reason or warrant for looking forward to something;…prospect for the future, as of advancement or prosperity…the probability of the occurrence, duration, etc. of something

We all have expectations….of life….of our friends and family….of events….and ourselves……..we have expectations of zillions of things.
Many of those we are not even conscious of…take for example….a voice on the radio….. I can listen to that voice for a long time without much thought about the person ….until one day … I when I saw a photo of that …VOICE/person… I was surprised with what I saw…I don/t know what I had expected… however…what I saw did not seem to fit… I actually was impressed with what I saw..
So that goes to show that our expectations can not only disappoint us….but in some cases…far excede our expectations….What made me think about this subject was this …my blog. Upon developing it my thoughts were….hmm…not exactly sure what to write….and if I do…who will even want to read it?

To my surprise….it now has over 31,000 hits…and I have to say…I am quite amazed about that….and on top of that….people actually took the time to comment….I did take a break from writing….but with the winter months rushing in…and the snow on it’s way….and seeing how many hits I have gotten….I am motivated….I am in a writing mood once again.
How about you….have you experienced any….”GREAT EXPECTATIONS ” lately???

frag·ile
Have you ever thought about fragility…and fragile things… like a snowflake or china bowl or maybe that glass tea pot???…What about people??…..Have you ever met someone who seemed to be in a fragile state….or maybe it was you….have you ever felt fragile???
Is it true……Do others really mold our dreams and hold our hopes in their hands??….If that is true…others are vital to our lives……and if so…how carefully do we handle our relationship with them?.Is it with care… in the same way we handle that rose bud about to open…or the fragile china bowl?….It is so easy to take for granted those closest to us….we are all guilty of that at times…..Imagine the centre of this little plate being you/me…..and all the buttons around us being family, friends and others…..by being careful with each other we are able to keep a strong connection…we are able to continue to touch each other’s hearts and be the strongest possible….

“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” – John Muir
Ever thought about …..Who you are hitched to ?

Life…it can get busy and there are times when we can no longer see the forest for the trees…..
here is a thought..
.I heard this many years ago and always thought it was good to remember every once in a while…so I will share it with you.

Rocks in the Jar
A Philosophy professor one day he picked up a large empty jar and proceeded to fill it with small rocks. He then asked his students if the jar was full? They unanimously agreed that the jar was full.
So professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked his students again if the jar was full. Again, they unanimously agreed that the jar was full.
Then the professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

“Now,” the professor said, “I want you to recognize that this is your life. The rocks are the important things: your family, your partner, your friends, your health, your children, and things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.”
Origin Unknown
How are your rocks keeping these days???

Every decision is the right decision.
I was talking with my daughter on the phone the other day…and she told me of a dilemma she was having…She had to make a decision …a choice…and she was not sure if she was making the right one… and for some reason I responded to her saying..“are there really any wrong decisions”???
Isn’t it true that …at that moment…the moment we make a decision…we have no way of knowing… if or how… a different decision could have turned out???…Sure we can speculate…and yes we can wonder…but can we ever really know??…And so…if we have no way of judging a possible different outcome from a different decision…wouldn’t it hold true that…our decision must be the right decision??
Now I am sure someone out there is not agreeing at all…but think for just a minute…Don’t you think that no matter who you are…no matter what kind of life you are living…and no matter how much knowledge you have…as an adult… faced with having to make a decision…you…we all… make the one that is right for us at that moment…the best one possible ???…..So keeping that in mind…I suppose it is possible …that if we are making the very best decisions we can …at the time we are faced with them…..YES…. every decision must be the right one!!!.

All my life whenever it comes time to make a decision, I make it and forget about it . Harry S. Truman
Could it be that …a decision is the right one…if we…believe it is the right one?”??…And if we believe it is the right one…if we accept it as the right one…isn’t it exactly that???…So then…if a person is always doubting their decisions..if a person is always thinking they could or should have made a better one…a different one…if a person is always looking back and wishing…rather than looking ahead and living…aren’t all of their decisions …the right decisions as well…the only difference is …they haven’t stopped to realize it???…

So it was a hard decision but I know it is the right one Graeme Le Saux
Have you ever thought about how many decisions…one person is required to make each day???…Ever think about how much time one person can spend in a day…in…the decision making process???…That has me wondering…are there decisions through out a day …that we spend way too much time on???…Certainly there are those that require time…a bit of research and fact finding prior to a final decision…but…what about those such as … which clothes to wear or which cereal to have for breakfast…or what time to go to bed???…
If our decisions are the right ones…we need not look back…we need not have regrets…for we know we did our best. SGU

Yes…there may come a day when our life will flash before our eyes…would ours be worth watching???
Have you ever had a moment … a moment when something caused your life to flash before you???…a moment when something caused you to take a serious look at the years that have passed. ..how you have spent them..something that made you wonder about the years to come and how you will spend them???…If your life flashed before you today…can you say…Yes…it was worth watching or do you think you would want to change the channel ???
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had the ability to look back…and change the channel if we did not like what flashed before us???
Well…we all know that is not possible…what is past is past…However .. if our life has not been worth watching…or if our life could be a better watch…do we have the capacity to change that???…Can a person make their life…a …more worth while watch??…In the hustle and bustle of our daily routine…can a person make changes to their own channel???…Can we work to change the inevitable “life flashing before our eyes” so we will be happy with the channel our life has been on???
That got me wondering…Is it possible in looking back… that what we see flash before our eyes …is in part …reality combined with our perceived reality???…Is it possible that the life that might flash before us…is a mixture of…people and events and behaviors…that we have come to believe as our life…but may not have actually occurred as we remember???….Can there be memories of our lives…that have been manufactured by others…or…redesigned by ourselves to suit our needs and attitudes ???
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. Albert Einstein

I wonder about this …as there are days I pick up an old journal I have written …and…I read and find to my surprise that…what I wrote about an event or feeling or behavior of a certain day…is very different from what I… now remember it to have been….In some cases it may have been only a few years and still…my memory has …over time… become distorted…So now I wonder about… if my life flashes before me one day…will it be my real life or my life distorted by time and the tricks my memory might have played.

So now I wonder…How much of my life …that I remember to be my life…really is???…How much is a distortion of it???…When my life flashes before me one day…will I truly be watching my channel or might it be a bad connection somewhere…causing distortion???…
Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.
Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.
Hans Margolius
Think about it….How quiet are your waters ???…How distorted are your perceptions???

I found this quote and it made me smile…
mostly because…
even in it’s shortness… it says so much.
be kind whenever possible…it is always possible

This simple little statement made me wonder … it sounds so simple…BE KIND…yet in practice…it is not…However…for us to be kind…it does not cost us anything…it does not hurt us…it doesn’t take much of our time…and….we all know how to do it…so why then… is it so difficult???

I would guess that we can all very easily…think of a time when someone …was NOT kind to us…when someone said or did something that hurt…that made us feel bad…or….how about the times when…we have done that to others…when we have not been kind.
Why if being kind… is such an easy thing to do….do people choose NOT TO BE..?
I would like to believe that …we all want to be kind…we all do our best to be …as kind as we can be…so why are there times we are not??… Could it be that we don’t really think about it?? …Could it be that we don’t realize our unkindness??…Could it be that we are in such a rush to get on with our lives….that we sometimes…forget about those around us??…Maybe it is that we are just too tired to even consider it some days…being kind.
I think you would agree that. ..people love it when someone is kind to them…..and that…it sure make us feel good when we are kind to someone… so why then… why wouldn’t we all want to be kinder to each other …more often???…Do we not like feeling good???….Is it that other things and emotions ….get in our way and make being kind … more difficult than it should be?
Sure we all partake in those special little acts of kindness…those good Samaritan acts… But what about our everyday actions??…How kind conscious are we with them???…How kind conscious are we to our kids…our husbands….the people we see everyday??…How kind are we from minute to minute???…Is it possible to be kinder…or not???…If there were a seminar on learning to be kind….how many of us would consider taking part?.
How kind do you want to be???… Think about it.

Be kind whenever possible…it is always possible
isn’t it???

As I was reading the weekend paper this morning…and after I finished it…there were two things that …for some reason…remained in my thoughts.
Number One..There were many articles about Charlie Sheen and his antics…his being fired from Two and a half Men…and yammerings about his lifestyle… I must admit…I love Two and a Half Men…and part of the reason it that it always makes me laugh…and…because I like the idea of a character playing himself…which I believe Charlie does…and that I find…so refreshing in some strange way.

Number Two…Luck…I noticed and remembered someone saying something about luck in an article…it read…
“You have to go out and make your own luck.”
Now that got me thinking all about luck…the dictionary states it like this…. The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; fortune.. Good fortune or prosperity; success… one’s personal fate or lot.
So now I am wondering about luck…Can a person make their own luck??…or is a person destined …to have …or… not have…luck!!!…If it is possible to make our own luck….and if we only knew how…we could all be lucky…right???…Or…are we all… lucky at times in our lives…however…we just don’t see it…Could it be …if we looked at life differently…we would realize…we ALL have luck in our lives??

It seems that we all know people who are luckier than others…and then there are…the others who never seem to get a brake…Are their lives really much different…or…could it be …they deal with their lives differently???
For instance…two different people… fall down a staircase…As they both lay at the bottom of the stairs with a broken leg…one person looks up and thinks …how lucky that only one leg hurts…it could have been worse…the second person looks up and thinks…#$#%##$#…why do these things happen to me !!!#$#$#…Same event…different ways to look at it…one feels lucky..the other not!!!…could that be the difference between being lucky and unlucky??… Does a person’s reaction to their life…cause them to not only feel lucky or not…but also to look lucky or unlucky to outsiders???
Doesn’t that make you wonder …how do people see you???….Are you lucky…or not???…
How much does ….fate and chance….really have to do with the luck in your life??

I wonder exactly what Tennyson meant when he said…the shell must break before the bird can fly???…Is he saying that events occur only after others do???….or might he mean…that nothing good comes without effort???…or that …if you want to soar you must break through your shell?…I am sure that…if I wanted to look it up…someone has analyzed and interpreted the meaning of this…however…I don’t care to find out.
This all brings me back to my school years and english classes…which I never did really like….It was not the reading that was my dislike…but rather…the interpretation of what I read…well.. not exactly…I had no problem interpreting…It was that I often did not come up with the same one as the teacher’s…which meant that…I was wrong…I had not understood…and so my grades reflected just that….To this day I don’t understand why I had to think like the teacher.
To this day…I think about that…and how great it is… to now…be in a place where I can interpret a story/book..anything for that matter…anyway I want…or…not !!!!…Does that all really matter???….Isn’t a good book …much like a great painting…
to be enjoyed …from your mind’s eye???…It all makes me wonder about… how we see and enjoy things…like a good book..Might it be the symbolism that jumps out at you..or the poetic tone ….or maybe the character development…or possibly even the visual picture it paints in your mind….You might focus on the vocabulary…or…the structure of the story ….that helps you find enjoyment in it…or maybe it bring back memories….Why do we HAVE TO interpret it at all…but rather…enjoy it!!!!
“Chicks in the Sticks”…a book club I belong to…has caused me to think about all of this…We discuss each book… I suppose we interpret it to some degree…and often there are multiple perceptions …and I find that so very refreshing….many different ways a story is perceived…understood…and enjoyed…I am not really a “group” person…but in this case…it is freeing in a way…and the “group” is what makes it so…and the group…is often attended by a different complement of readers…which again makes it very interesting…hearing a variety of takes on the same book…without getting bad grades!!!
So I ask you…is understanding …simply someone’s perception???…It is said that a person’s perception …is…their reality…and if that is so…is it possible to ever change that reality???….Would a person’s perception have to be altered???…and if so…is that ever a possibility???…Think about it.
When you look at the pics below….what do you perceive??????

Is this a horse in the water…or…a seahorse ???
Are these shoes made of loaves of bread…or…loafers???
A chair covered with grass…or…a lawn chair???
A snail pulling envelopes…or…snail mail????
If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.
Henry Ford

I am sure, like me, you have all had times when you …thought you couldn’t…and…surprise!!!!….you couldn’t….When you were young…it might have meant getting a good grade in school…or…learning to sew…or maybe…it was getting a date…or… making it into a team or becoming cheerleader…In those days …I suppose we all had times when we couldn’t and didn’t….Why though…did it seem there were always those who “COULD”…I wonder if they always believed they could..and so they did…or was it that they never actually considered they couldn’t??
We all know our minds/brains… are a powerful tool…and we have all heard that we use only a teensy weesy bit if it…like the tip of the iceburg…So
that makes me wonder…If we have all that unused power …just sitting beneath the water line…how do we access it???…and if we could…would it make us think more often that…. “WE CAN” ???….Or…if …more and more….we really believed we “CAN”…are we actually accessing the hidden part of the iceburg???…using more of our brains???…without even realizing???
Are there people with more of the iceberg out of water than others???…Of course…there must be!!!….Surely a rocket scientist…or a brain surgeon…uses a bit more of their brain than I do…writing stories and quilting???…Is it possible at birth …that more of an iceberg can be above water…just naturally???…and if so…are those the people who CAN and CAN and CAN again???…
I would rather like to think that…we have the capacity to make our icebergs rise higher…that we have the ability to…if we really want to …to use more of that hidden power…So then…does that also mean that…if you think you can’t…over and over again…and so CAN’T….are you causing your iceberg to sink…your mind/brain to diminish???? Hmmm…now that is a scary thought!!!
![]()
And so…I can…I can….why would I consider anything else???
