Yes…there may come a day when our life will flash before our eyes…would ours be worth watching???

Have you ever had a moment … a moment when something caused your life to flash before you???…a moment when something  caused you to take a serious look at the years that have passed. ..how you have  spent them..something that made you wonder about the years to come and how you will spend them???…If your life flashed before you today…can you say…Yes…it was worth watching or do you think you would want to change the channel ???

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had the ability to look back…and change the channel if we did not like what flashed before us???

Well…we all know that is not possible…what is past is past…However .. if our life has not been worth watching…or if our life could be a better watch…do we have the capacity to change that???…Can a person make their life…a …more worth while watch??…In the hustle and bustle of our daily routine…can a person make changes  to  their own channel???…Can we work to change  the inevitable “life flashing  before our eyes” so we will be happy with the channel our life has been on???

That got me wondering…Is it possible in looking back…  that what we see flash before our eyes …is in part …reality combined with our  perceived reality???…Is it possible that the life that might flash before us…is a mixture of…people and events and behaviors…that we have come to believe as our life…but may not have actually occurred as we remember???….Can there be memories of our lives…that  have been manufactured by others…or…redesigned by ourselves to suit our needs and attitudes ???

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.  Albert Einstein

I wonder about this …as there are days I pick up an old journal I have written …and…I read and find to my surprise that…what I wrote about an event or feeling or behavior of a certain day…is very different from what I… now remember it to have been….In some cases it may have been only a few years and still…my memory has …over time… become distorted…So now I wonder about… if my life flashes before me one day…will it be my real life or my life distorted by time and the tricks my memory might have played.

So now I wonder…How  much of my life …that I remember to be my life…really is???…How much is a distortion of it???…When my life flashes before me one day…will I truly be watching my channel or might it be a bad connection somewhere…causing distortion???…

Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.

Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.

Hans Margolius

Think about it….How quiet are  your waters ???…How distorted are your  perceptions???

Do you have an imagination????…What is it really????

The formation of a mental image of something that is neither perceived as real nor present to the senses. ..The ability or tendency to form such images…The ability to confront and deal with reality by using the creative power of the mind; resourcefulness: handled the problems with great imagination.A traditional or widely held belief or opinion... An unrealistic idea or notion; a fancy…A plan or scheme.

limitations live only in our minds, but if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.
Jamie Paolinetti

Yesterday I had the pleasure of reading Sam’s Weird Afternoon to 8 school classes at Southwood School…Winkler/Shaunzenfeld, Manitoba….There were lots of questions and comments from the children…but before I left one classroom…one little boy raised his hand to tell me he just lost a tooth…which he proudly held in his hand for me to see…I asked him what he was going to do with it??…and he said…”Put it under my pillow??” and then I asked why…his response was…”Because then my parent will put some money in its place at night.”….

Made from pencils...now that takes imagination!!!

Your parents???…I said inquisitively”…when one little girl quickly informed me…”Yes…because there is no tooth fairy”…Now I was not about to let that one go and I said…”What are you talking about???..of course there is a tooth fairy!!!”…to which they all chimed in….NO !…So I went on to say…”Well I believe there is a tooth fairy”…and then the questions began….how big is she???…where does she get all the money??? she must be very rich…if she is so small , how does she carry the money all the way????…

And here were  my answers….She is about this big (holding my thumb and index finger about 2 inches apart…she is a fairy and fairy’s are very tiny….the money???she goes to your parent’s room, finds a few coins  and moves them to your room….she only has to carry from one room to another…and then I said….”you know what I think…if you stop believing in the tooth fairy…she will eventually stop coming!!””

Good thing Santa Clause was not brought up…you don’t want to get me started on that topic as I could go on for some time…expaining the whys and wherefores of the Santa legend. I love being confronted by sceptical little minds….non believers.

When is it that we stop believing…when we stop imagining ???….when we stop stretching our minds and become skeptical about the things we cannot  see???…Is that a sign of maturity???… Has imagination  gotten lost in the busyness and reality of life???.

Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.

 Albert Einstein

Is our imaginations….something we have to continue to nourish to keep  alive????….Once lost , can a person’s imagination be rekindled???

Many would say they have not time for such silly things as imagination…however….if you like to read fiction books…. are you not using your imagination???….and if you go to church and believe in a higher being…doesn’t that require a bit of imagination???…and what about decorating a cake or creating a piece of art…or creating a song or in mentally planning a garden????….Surely…imagination is needed there as well.

As we grow and learn more and more…our imaginations can  to be replaced with facts and figures and information. …If we tried…I believe there is much to  learn  from children …Don’t let our intelligence take over our creative, imaginative side…We can learn to try to believe in fantasy and makebelieve….we can have more fun!!!!

Imagination rules the world.

 Napoleon Bonaparte

Why is it that often when our children are young….we read imaginative stories to them….The Mud Puddle…Green Eggs and Ham…Snow White… We read to them stories where all the animals and plants talk …sing and dance…and never once talk about the unreality of it all….so why once they and we… get older…must  we ignore such fun possibilities??

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!
Theodor Geisel

Having a bad day????

Not happy with your job...try this for a day!!!

Volcanically stuck…what an interesting use of vocabulary. I received an email today from a dear friend who informed me she was not able to make it to the book lauch as she was…volcanically stuck in England at the time. We all have had many reasons for not making it to an event….be it… sick…forgot.. an important .meeting…a death in the family….working and so on. But how many of us can say we have been Volcanically Stuck…and so could not be there????? ….I think if there was a Guinness Book of Records category entitled…reason for missing an event…this would for sure be  the  winner!!!

Expectations…

The act of expecting…Eager anticipation: eyes shining with expectation  …  The state of being expected…Something expected: a result that did not live up to expectations…expectations …Prospects, especially of success or gain…The expected value of a random variable. ..The mean of a random variable.

We all have had expectations about something or someone….throughout our lives. Sometimes events and people meet our expectations and other times they don’t.  The past year has been one of expectations for me. Expectations about the making of my book, expectations of the people who helped me…expectations about how it would be accepted…expectations about book events and book sales.

So far for me…all of those have met my expectations and more. With each next step, I am thrilled once again with the outcome. So am I just fortunate???…or….Are my expectations too low???…Should they be higher???…Hmmmm.  I can say that… I have worked very hard so far and put in countless hours toward Sam’s Weird Afternoon…..I suppose that could be a reason in it all.

Have you ever had a situation where someone or something did not meet your expectation???…I think we all have…The other day I saw a photo of a radio personality that I have listened to for years…but when I saw his photo…it did not meet my expectations of him….no… he did not let me down or anything like that…how could he…it was just a photo of him.   However…he did not look like I expected him to look. I bet that has happened to you once or twice as well.

That was  an example of  “expectations”… an example of how we  form unrealistic l images in our mind and when that image is different. from the reality…we are disappointed….right????…..So if someone or something…such as a thing or a person or an event… disappoints us…does not meet our expectations….is part of it because of the unrealistic image we have already formed which is different from the reality???…Can a person expect too much and be disappointed over an over again???…Can a person expect too little  and also be disappointed over and over again???

How do we find a comfortable level of expectation???….one that gives  a pretty good chance of things and people meeting our expectations much of the time???

Here is a good example…parents…parents who expect their kids to get A;s and B;s on their report card…and when it comes home with all C’s….is not meeting their expectation of that child.  They are disappointed. But if the child is a C student…shouldn’t that be the expectation???  Not to say you shouldn’t reach for bigger goals…but don’t we need to be a bit realistic???…and how about expectations we have on ourselves????

Are you able to meet your expectations of yourself most of the time??…How realistic are you about you??? Are your expectations ..bigger than the reality????
