Good reason to go out in nature

These days we can find a lot of people with psychological problems, burnouts and not really fully satisfied with the life they have now.
Their view of this world may be clouded. On many levels, there seem to be conflicts for them that may not be there in real life.

All too quickly, many people reach for chemical remedies. Heaps of medicines are consumed.

More than 40 years ago, a pioneering study showed that hospitalized patients needed fewer painkillers and recovered quicker when they looked out of a window onto green space rather than a brick wall.

“Yet until now, the underlying reasons for this effect were unclear,”

said Maximilian Steininger, a neuroscientist at the University of Vienna and lead author of a study published in Nature Communications.

For many years, Marcus Ampe called on people to get out into nature more to unwind or get over traumas. This is because he is convinced that simply walking in nature and watching it grow that we can find inner peace and heal psychological wounds. Many laugh at this and claim it is just a placebo, like the homeopathic medication Mr Ampe fully supports.

Because people like nature, it could have a placebo effect. Or what if it is not nature that reduces pain, but city life that increases it?

The brain response shows overall brain activity involved in processing the location and intensity of pain. This response was lower when people were exposed to virtual nature scenes compared to urban or indoor scenes. (Max Steininger/University of Vienna)

To find out more, the researchers recorded the brain activity of 49 volunteers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fRMI).

The subjects looked at different images while receiving a series of electric shocks – some more painful than others – on the back of their left hand.

The first scene depicted a lake surrounded by trees blowing in the wind, while the sounds of rustling leaves and birdsong played in the background.

In the second scene, some urban elements such as buildings, benches and alleyways were added, while city noise intruded.

The third scene was of an office, with the accompanying drab furniture and whir of work.

‘Important practical implications’

Not only did the participants report feeling less pain when they looking at the natural landscapes, the fMRI scans showed there was a difference in their brains.

“Our study is the first to provide evidence from brain scans that this isn’t just a placebo effect,”

Steininger said in a statement.

The nature scenes provoked decreased activity in a part of the brain involved in perceiving pain, called nociception. However other areas linked to regulating pain were not significantly affected.

The researchers said the results could be because natural environments capture people’s attention, diverting them away from the sensation of pain.

This is known in psychology as the “attention restoration theory”.

“The fact that this pain-relieving effect can be achieved through a virtual nature exposure which is easy to administer has important practical implications,”

said study co-author Alex Smalley from the UK’s Exeter University.

It also

“opens new avenues for research to better understand how nature impacts our minds,”

he added.

Weetabix healthy or not

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

For years I doubted the soundness of the many breakfast cereals sold in the supermarket. When I was offered a choice of several breakfast cereals, in flakes and in biscuits, at Charing Cross Hospital for breakfast in 1978, I assumed that surely they must be healthy food if they were also sold in a hospital.

Presumably, several breakfast cereals have passed the revue at your table.
What is certain is that among the large number on offer there are also many less healthy cereals, especially those containing far too much sugar and salt.

Photo by Bruno Scramgnon on Pexels.com

Since that hospitalisation, the wheat biscuits Weetabix, Muesli, Oats, and All Bran have become part of my eating habits for a long time. All Bran has since fallen off because of its too-high salt content.

As human food, cereals are usually marketed in their raw grain form (some are frozen or canned) or as ingredients of various food products.

Originally Australian-New Zealand (Weet-Bix), for me Weetabix has the British touch.

In the 1980s and 1990s, manufacturers looked more at young people and touted the biscuit as a fortifying food.

Unlike the “fun” cereals loaded with chocolate and sugar, Weetabix always seemed reassuringly bland. Marketed as “good food you can trust”, surely something that looks and tastes this wholesome has to be good for you?

But the recent focus on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has raised questions about how healthy Weetabix really is. After all, it’s tricky – but not impossible – to make your own wheat biscuits at home, as they are a (minimally) processed food.

Weetabix Crispy Minis (fruit & nut variety) with dessert spoon for scale.

To make matters more confusing, you can now choose from several different types of Weetabix, designed to cater for all tastes and dietary preferences: from high protein and organic recipes, to crispy flakes, minis with added fruit and nuts, and even chocolate flavour biscuits. The one thing they all have in common is a tendency to turn to cement if you forget to rinse your bowl. This is due to the high starch content, which turns Weetabix into an adhesive paste when mixed with water, similar to the process used to make paper. Although that doesn’t sound very appetising, there’s no need to worry about the same thing happening in your digestive system.

“Despite its relatively straightforward ingredients list, Weetabix falls into the category [of UPFs] due to the presence of added sugars and certain processed ingredients like malted barley extract. However, not all UPFs are created equal. For instance, original Weetabix varieties provide a good source of whole grains, fibre, and essential vitamins and minerals, which contribute positively to a balanced diet. This distinction highlights why we shouldn’t label all UPFs as unhealthy.”

says Rhiannon Lambert, a registered nutritionist, author of The Science of Plant Based Nutrition and founder of Rhitrition and Rhitrition Plus clinic

Are Weetabix actually healthy?

Five reasons why Weetabix can be considered healthy :

1. It’s low in sugar

2. It’s high in fibre

3. It’s fortified

4. It’s low in salt

5. It’s convenient

Active hope

Many people feel worried about the future and believe things are getting worse in the world right now.
We cannot argue that there are many things today that we may or even should be concerned about.
The good news is that acknowledging these concerns is actually the first step to finding positive ways forward.

Since last Saturday, Marcus Ampe has given speeches in the Belgian ecclesiae of the Christadelphians, which will continue for a few weeks, about the circumstances from which we can leave, by going on a spiritual trek or pilgrimage together.

A new ecclesia has been founded in Anderlecht and to build an ecclesia it is, as it were, for members or visitors to go on a pilgrimage. To take part in such a trek one must be well prepared and bring the right luggage, all the ballast must be omitted.

Life offers many challenges that might come like overwhelming storms. Every day we are confronted with something that may bother us. Sometimes we have to face obstacles like crashing waves breaking over us. For many, their self-doubt and insecurities seem always to be their shadow. Preacher Marcus Ampe suggests stepping out of that shadow. He advises us to take a boat to calmer waters. At the same time, he warns us that we must be aware of the realities of life and death that may leave their mark. There will always be rocks below the surface of the water that we can run into.

With his words of advice and guidance to go on the path to a better life, he spreads hope for a better life in a better future. To some, it seems like we’re stuck with all the annoyances of this life. But Mr. Ampe is convinced that we can get rid of those annoying things in this world. By making the right choice, we can go out to a promised better world. However, for this, we must deliberately go in a certain direction, which many see as idiotic. But we should not care much about that, we should go straight ahead. And to this end we have an excellent guide, which also tells about a people who went straight through the opened Reed Sea, to be freed from slavery by the Egyptians.

Our modern passage through the ‘virtual Reed Sea’ – Red Sea -, is one we must go through together. United, we are also much stronger and can brave the fiercest storms. United we can also pull through the walls of water. If our faith is strong enough, the walls will stand.

Those who are weaker in faith must be drawn along by the stronger, and so we will be able to move on.

Brother Marcus also believes that we should not hide from the outside world and even less ‘we shouldn’t care about that world’. We must be very aware of what is going wrong and must also address others about it. We must be aware of the task that God has given man, namely to care for nature. Attracting us from nothing is an easy solution, but according to Brother Marcus it is not the right way. We must stand up for the weak, it can be said for the weak people, but also for the animals and plants whose voices are not heard by many and do not have their rights respected.

This world of injustice, much pain and poverty, full of desolation, cannot and will not remain. Those who believe in God and accept His Promises as true, are convinced that after the greatest coming horror, the Third World War will be the last. Not that there will then be a complete destruction of the earth. But when the End of Time comes, Jesus Christ will return to judge the living and the dead. After many millennia, the many expectations and searches will finally come to an end.

That in prospect and bearing in mind, is there enough nutrient to nourish our hopes and keep them active.

Actieve hoop

Alle ballast moet men achterwege laten.

Necessity to be cheerful to help yourself and others

Around Thanksgiving Day, in addition to showing gratitude,
it is not bad to take a moment to focus on the need to be cheerful and positive thinking.

At our other website which you also might not forget to visit now and then, we started also looking back at 2023.
Each time, we will highlight some highlights or happenings, or bring up a few things that may have escaped your notice and had not yet been mentioned on that site.

Being cheerful on the outside can help you – and others – feel it on the inside

Our chief preacher, Marcus Ampe, (during the course of this year, before his heart attack) emphasised how we need to ensure that we strengthen ourselves spiritually to keep us healthy and to energetically stimulate others as well.

He stressed that the inner man, the wellbeing of our soul, is the most important thing to help us and others move forward in life.
In these times of a shortage of real conversations, as everything is done fleetingly through social media, our society, according to him, lacks self-confidence and a healthy state of mind.

“The surest sign of wisdom is a constant cheerfulness,”

wrote the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne in the 16th century.

According to Mr Ampe, in the long run, we should ignore people who influence us badly and focus more on positive impulses we can get in life.

He also said there is no point if we are too preoccupied with the things that go wrong in our lives. We need to learn to worry less about all the things we see going wrong around us.

“Be cheerful,”

commands the fictional character and the protagonist (Prospero) of William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest – arguably the wisest of all of Shakepeare’s characters – in The Tempest. Yet the impact of cheerfulness – and the power it gives us to get through difficult moments in our lives – is hard to define and easy to disregard or dismiss, even as we strive to be happy.

Someone who is cheerful is happy and shows this in his behaviour and makes that person have or express a buoyant or self-confident air. With good humour we should try to spread God’s Word which is a message of joy and gladness, bringing the Good News of better times to come.

A group of performers in 1940s clothes, dressed warmly for a visit to northern Scotland

Marcus Ampe also warns us, that we need to prepare spiritually for much more difficult times ahead. To get through those terrible times, we must have a sound mind that will not let itself be dragged into the depths by what is happening around us. He reminded us of the BBC’s wartime radio comedy It’s That Man Again – or ITMA – that kept British peckers up during the blitz. It was a morale-boosting cavalcade of wacky characters, cheeky catchphrases and proto-Goon sound effects, in which the recurrent character depressed charlady Mona Lott, played by Joan Harben, in the 1929–1949 BBC Radio series would drone the latest awful thing that had happened to her and then hit you with the devastatingly deadpan punchline:

“It’s being so cheerful that keeps me going.”

Let us not forget

Saint Paul had pointed to cheerfulness as the mediating affect that defines our relationship to the mystical body of Christ in the community of the new church”.

It is a learned discipline, to be taken perfectly seriously as something that promotes social cohesiveness and personal humility. He finds Friedrich Nietzsche to be a key figure in the history of modern cheerfulness. While not obviously Mr Cheerful, the philosopher was someone who rejected the idea of it as mere placid wellbeing.

Marcus Ampe is totally aware that it is not, or will not always be easy, to be ‘cheerful’ or to be friendly and receptive to everyone. It is something we shall have to learn and work on.

We should also remember that our face speaks volumes and no false facade should appear on it. As followers of Christ, we should always be honest and our faith in the future should radiate through our attitude. Even though we may be handicapped or in great pain, we should make the best of ourselves and always remain open to the pains and complaints of others, whom we should then relieve and give hope.

Cheers is also about a community spirit, or a kind of moral hospitality, a rejection of self-indulgence and a prioritising of the general mood.

“Cheerfulness is a psychological and emotional resource, a way of approaching actions and situations,”

says Timothy Hampton, a professor in the department of comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

“I can say hello to you – but I can also say hello to you cheerfully. It’s not part of the saying ‘hello’, it’s some kind of colouring of what I am saying.”

And what we are saying and what we are doing as Christians is very important. We should be an example to others. An example of good spirit. According to Hampton, for whom getting through the day was very difficult is cheerfulness a resource

– you can make it, manage it and put it into action.
And that seemed to me to be a really precious and interesting thing that we don’t think about as much as we should.”

he says.

(Some View on the World)

Don’t forget our overview of daily facts

Not closing ourselves off to what is going on in the world

For those who would not yet know or have forgotten, we would like to remind you that we provide a daily summary of daily facts on our news site: Some View on the World.

A lot of people are preoccupied daily with their obligations to provide sufficient income. As a result, they may not even get sufficiently informed about what is happening on a global scale during the day. When they return home in the evening, they are often too tired to watch news broadcasts and insight programmes or current affairs (news format).

Did you know that Marcus Ampe has created a site, especially for this purpose, which gives a regular overview of what is happening in the world and how we can view it? His intention was to allow several voices to speak, even if they might even contradict themselves in certain circumstances. But according to Marcus Ampe, it should be possible to juxtapose different opinions and give the reader a chance to choose which side of the story he prefers and which he also wants to delve further into.

Being able to follow the important news of the day on a daily basis is not obvious, completely free Some View on the World provides that option.

We would like to invite you to take a look. We would appreciate it even more if you would also register to be kept informed of new publications.

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

We not often ask our readers something. But today I love to send the Jetpack question forward to the readers of this site.

I was able to make my hobby into my profession. Not many can say so. But for lots of people, like for me all love is given to the hobby.

I loved dance and I became a dancer. I love history and at one point I had my archive and also came to teach history of Ballet.

I love God and His Word and Works, so I came involved in proclaiming the Word of God and became responsible for the Christadelphian church in Belgium.

As you can see, my hobbies took a great part of my life and could also give me a lot of satisfaction.

Weight loss is a vital public-health issue

When walking on the streets, you can not ignore the many people who carry with them too much fat.

In May, a landmark study presented at the European Congress on Obesity, in Dublin, outlined the true cost of obesity to the NHS, revealing that the health service could save £14 billion a year if everyone were a healthy weight. Obese patients were found to cost the NHS twice as much as those of a healthy weight.

Weight loss is a vital public-health issue, but the personal benefits are equally great. Being overweight or obese has been proven to significantly increase the risk of developing serious health conditions, including cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, among others.

For many people it might look very difficult to lose weight. But it does not have to be such a struggle. We should reflect more on how food/drink/activity makes us feel. How many people don’t take sweets when they feel bad, or grab alcohol to feel better? More than once, we let our morals undermine our physical situation rather than show ourselves strongly and not let ourselves be done by circumstances outside ourselves. Occasionally a glass of alcohol will not hurt, but if it becomes a regular grab to the bottle, we will enter the danger zone. Furthermore, the danger lurks around the corner that we are influenced by the fear of thickening, which makes us stress and eat more small snacks that will make us turn on. We should avoid any ‘Stress’.

A 2016 study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that losing 5 per cent of body weight was enough to significantly reduce the risk of common diseases in a sample of 40 obese adults. In practice, this means the average British man (who weighs 13st 5lb/85.4kg, according to NHS data) would need to lose about 9½lb/4.27kg; for the average woman (11st 4lb/72.1kg), it is 8lb/3.6kg.

“Five per cent is a good target to be aiming for, and it’s possible to achieve over about a 12-week period for many people, depending on your starting body weight,”

says consultant endocrinologist Dr Saira Hameed. And, she says, you will feel the benefit in every area of your life.

“Your mobility will improve; your physical fitness will improve; it will take pressure off your back, your hips and your knees,”

she says.

“Losing 5 per cent of body weight also has metabolic advantages in lowering cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure.”

Marcus Ampe is convinced each person has everything in his hands. He says people do not have to take a drastic diet. Mostly when they start such a diet, they shall not be able to end it and after they stop it the will put on wight again and as such shall end up in a yo-yo system of losing and gaining weight, which is much worse for their body and shall also have a negative impact on their mind.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally, and more than four out of five CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes. Excess weight and obesity can lead to high cholesterol and blood pressure, both of which can contribute to heart disease.

We have to avoid strain on the heart. Being overweight or obese makes us to carry an extra load and is a key risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, resulting in high blood-sugar levels. In turn, type 2 diabetes is linked with an increased risk of other serious health conditions.

Research led by the diabetes expert Roy Taylor, professor of medicine and metabolism at Newcastle University, showed that a low-calorie diet and weight-management programme put diabetes into remission in 46.5 per cent of people, and of those, 70 per cent were still in remission two years later.

We may not forget that weight loss in general reduces the chance of illness overall.

“In terms of avoiding all sorts of problems, including cancers, we found there was a clear benefit of weight loss,”

Prof Taylor says.

In 2022, NHS guidance changed to prioritise telling arthritis patients to exercise and lose weight over prescribing them painkillers. Over-60s who exercise suffer 25 per cent less joint pain than those who are sedentary, according to a study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy.

Mr Ampe is also convinced that regular physical exercise is the most important factor to get our figure in shape again; But he warns people that they might not be afraid that the numbers on the scale would go higher at first. This happens because the growing muscles weigh more than the lost fat. But bit by bit, by doing regular exercises and eating healthier food people shall lose weight.

“When we are overweight or obese, we also tend to have high insulin levels, in association with being insulin resistant. Insulin is a growth factor for normal healthy cells, but also cancer cells, so that plays a part,”

says Dr Hameed.

“When you’re overweight or obese, you are in a low-level state of chronic inflammation, as cytokines [proteins that help regulate inflammation] are released directly by body fat, and they probably also play a role in the development of cancer.”

That is why people with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk: recent research from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine found that the risk of dying from any type of cancer is 18 per cent higher among people with type 2 diabetes than it is in the general population.

Therefore, Mr Ampe recommends that people do not wait too long before taking measures to adjust their dietary habits. But he also recommends working on a regular lifestyle so that eating heavy meals late will be a thing of the past. Because those meals eaten late at night are a major cause of unnecessary fat build-up.

Are you a newsflash nightingale?

There are some of those people who reach for their smartphones as soon as they wake up to see if someone has sent them a message and to see what their news apps have to say for news.

Do you turn to your news apps as soon as you wake up, or do you prefer a leisurely read of the papers over Sunday brunch?

Or are you someone who still wishes to peruse the paper newspaper over breakfast?

Do you feel overwhelmed by news in the digital age, or do you relish the chance to sample a variety of news and features throughout the day?

So much is happening in this world that we cannot follow it all closely. But it is almost impossible to go through all the news sources to get a clear picture of the main issues that should concern us. It is also not possible to have our own news aggregator, though such online platform or software device that collects news stories and other information as that information is published and would organise that information for us in a specific manner, would be very practical.

Gathering news from all over the world is not a cheap business. It would also become too costly to have subscriptions to a multitude of daily and weekly newspapers and magazines.

But do you know, that for those who are curious about what is happening in the world, we provide a news platform so that everyone can freely get an overview of the day’s events. We try to present  some views from all sorts of ‘political’ directions and from different newspapers to give a broad aspect of information that can be compared with the different ideas. The editor in charge of this blog and of Some View on the World, Marcus Ampe, is convinced that one should be able to juxtapose several opinions, thus creating a dialogue but also allowing everyone to form their own opinion.

With Some view on the World, a variety of news reports are presented, with some reports perhaps being reported a little later, because we feel it is necessary to be able to check them for truth each time, so that no false reporting would be sent further into the world through our fault. So do not expect to find regular “Breaking News”, because such news can not always be directly verified. We also do not look to social media to stay up with breaking news, and have a critical and suspicious eye for such social media. You will be able to notice on Some View on the World, that it calls on a whole team of reporters to uncover news events and present them to you.
Furthermore, we will not shy away from putting forward our personal views on certain events. Here we then admit that this will be from a Christian point of view, which we also inform our readers about. Regularly, therefore, we will make room to approach or address some spiritual aspects more deeply.
The difference with our other spiritual or religious websites, like our Ecclesial website, is that on Some View on the World, we are rather more responsive to current events and will further provide responses to church articles that are out there at the time published on other channels and brought forward by other denominations, a.o. shedding light on people their religious life.

We further admit that for news coverage, a choice is made from what touched us during the course of the day as we recorded talking points, watched news broadcasts on television, had conversations, and so on.

We may be of the old breed and therefore not followers of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or Picodash as they are also very time-consuming, this is while we are convinced that instead of engaging with social media, we can use our time more usefully. Because our time is very limited – provided, we experience every day that we lack time.

Instead of continuing to publish on the slow opening Blogspot, “Our World” has been transferred (at the end of 2021) to WordPress so that a person now can easily access the website through Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer or Edge, hoping that now a faster loading site shall attract more visitors because no one wants a page that takes more than 30 seconds loading.

Whatever your style of gathering news, we hope we can charm you into signing up to follow our news blog Some view on the World.

Incorporate new things into your daily routine – without feeling like it’s a struggle

“Many people have been conditioned into thinking of January 1 as a day when we deprive ourselves of all the things that we have been encouraged to indulge in during December,”

neurologist Dr Rachel Taylor says.

“But the brain is hardwired to make it difficult for you because it does not deal with deprivation well.”

Dr Taylor advises that if you need extra motivation to make a change,

“start to really reflect on how that food/drink/activity makes you feel.

In these dark days, it is easy to get carried away with dark thoughts. For this, we must be careful not to get discouraged or start feeling miserable. The danger is that if you get carried away by those dark thoughts, you will also start feeling inferior and others will notice your weakness and take advantage of it.

We need to be aware that everyone encounters dark moments from time to time and that not everything can always be rosy. There is really no need to always show ourselves strong. We should not always put away our weaker points. It comes down to finding the right people with whom to share our weaknesses and talk quietly about things that bother us. Sharing our weaknesses shall make us vulnerable, but to make you vulnerable shall show your strength.

Marcus Ampe always advised people to bring the mind in balance with the body. For him, it is clear we need, first and foremost, to sort out our own inner self before we start working on the outer. If we are not happy with our appearance, we must find ways to accept our “self” as it is, be it too fat or too skinny, or not the shape we would like.

“Before taking drastic action on our body, we need to calm our “soul” by going for a walk in the great outdoors, for example.”

he says.

As we walk, we can safely think about many things that bother us. But we should also try to quiet our minds while observing the greenery and animals around us. Therefore, according to Mr. Ampe:

“Even if others may want to take us deeper, we must convince ourselves that we are worth being there and that we can contribute enough to others.”

Thus, during those walks in the morning and afternoon, we need to open up to what we are, but also to change that we can let come to ourselves.

“The brain is much more likely to accept change when you have done a sound job in convincing it that it is worth the extra effort and energy it is going to have to expend on managing the change.”

Even though these are dark days, we must not let our thoughts darken. According to M. Ampe, it is therefore also best to start fully enjoying the sun’s warming rays (albeit little) after sunrise.

Dr Rachel Taylor, like him, finds that an early morning blast is essential.

“The rate of production of serotonin has been shown multiple times in research to have a direct correlation with the amount of sunlight a person gets: it rises quickly when access to sunlight increases.

In Scandinavian countries, therefore, often light therapy is used, to reduce suicides during these winter months.

“The more serotonin you have the more melatonin your brain can make, which is not just good for sleep, although that is its primary role, but is a really powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound.”

That early dose of sunlight could have added benefits for weight loss: a study from the University of Alberta found that lack of exposure to sunlight could lead to an increase in fat and therefore contribute to weight gain.

Especially with these dark days and upcoming holidays, we do dare to go beyond our means and eat more than we actually need to, while also reaching for sweets a lot quicker, to feel better.

It is no use that we let ourselves become stressed by what we would go to eat at Christmas and New Year, or what presents we are going to buy. Stress is to be avoided. Though this period is one in which many people get unnecessarily stressed out. Many are very busy, dealing with endless to-do lists and struggling to balance it all. This search for trying to do the best for others results often in a day-to-day life that feels too hectic. Our running back and forth in search of the right gifts and food gets us so excited that we throw ourselves off balance.
By putting their body these days into overdrive, lots of people do not see it is taking them down. Fatigue becomes the master of them.

A good way to get back to folds should start as early as breakfast.

Many think their daily serving of breakfast cereal is a healthy dose of calories and vitamins. But the majority of people use breakfast cereals with added sugars. And these are bound to be avoided. So no granola or caramelised cereals, even those with hoing processed breakfast cereals should be taboo. The concept of cereal food that originated in the vegetarian beliefs of the American Seventh-day Adventists, who in the 1860s formed the Western Health Reform Institute, later renamed the Battle Creek Sanitarium, in Battle Creek, Michigan, was very healthy, but the food industry made something sweet after it to tempt more people to come to enjoy their products. Therefore forget those ‘modernised’ grainproducts and go back to the  source, ditching the sugary, high-carb cereal for a more balanced start to the day.

“If you start your day with a good quality source of protein, some fat and some vegetables, you will balance your blood sugar levels,”

says nutritionist Grace Kingswell, who advocates eggs and vegetables to start the day.

But, Mr Ampe warns, in doing so we must be careful not to be tempted in the supermarket to buy fruit and vegetables that do not belong in our own region during the particular season.

“Only seasonal fruit and vegetables should be put on our plates.”

he says.

In doing so, choosing the right food at the right season will bring us into balance with nature and provide the necessary nutrients and vitamins for that time of year.

“It will have positive benefits for your hormone balance, PMS, energy levels, mood, stress response, cravings, satiety, weight management, and so much more.”

remarks Kingswell.

Researchers at the University of Missouri found that a higher protein breakfast produced lower spikes in glucose and insulin after meals, which led to increased feelings of fullness throughout the day (if you struggle to eat first thing, try adding a protein shake, such as one from strongnutrients.com). Increased vegetables also have added benefits for your gut health.

After having started the day with a good meal, one can go for the first walk of the day. Before that walk, like at other moments during the day, it is, according to Mr. Ampe, also not bad to take the Bible at hand and to read, every day, some verses out of that inspiration book. The part read that day should bring something to think or meditate about.

For good reason, private devotion or mental exercise encompassing various techniques of concentration, contemplation, and abstraction, is regarded as conducive to heightened self-awareness, spiritual enlightenment, and physical and mental health. Meditation has never been more popular: there are currently more than 51 million posts on Instagram.

Neuroscientists at UC San Diego recently reported that mindful meditation can be as effective in reducing pain relief as medication. While in another recent study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers found that a guided mindfulness-based program was as effective as the use of medication for patients with anxiety disorders.

Even for a beginner with no serious health issues, a 13-minute daily meditation improves mood, sleep and memory, according to researchers at John Hopkins University.

“There is no need at all to repeat all the time some words or phrases,”

says Mr. Ampe.

“It is much more important to get toward mental, emotional, and physical well-being, by concentrating on the Words given by our Creator, Who has provide the most complete words or thoughts to instruct and form or mould us in the best human being we should become.”

Some prefer through the repetition of a mantra, to still the activity of thought and to experience a deep state of relaxation, which is said to lead to enhanced contentment, vitality, and creativity, but by repeating such mantra, the source of the problem is not taken away. By using the Bible as a source and backbone of life, a person shall be able to attack the real problem and origin of the troubles. Feeding yourself every day with such spiritual food shall enrich and strengthen yourself more, so that you and others shall be able to notice changes in yourself. At the same time you should not be afraid to use that active, voluntary, and systematic thinking about a biblical or theological topic, to be part of your conversation with others, by which you shall come to feel that a certain confidence shall also give you more strength.

“The meditations are designed to be incorporated into your everyday life and can be done sitting, standing or while doing light exercise such as walking, hiking or stretching. We want to make it as easy as possible to meditate any time, anywhere,”

says Julz Arney, director of fitness for health technologies at Apple.

By knowing the Divine Creator, Jehovah God, and giving time to yourself to think about His Words and worship Him, you shall find out that you will gain the first step to coming at ease with yourself and making you strong enough to tackle this world.

The tips from the experts here are small changes that you can start to incorporate into your daily routine – without feeling like it’s a struggle.

Everyday activities to keep you fit and healthy

For years, choreologist Marcus Ampe also tried to convince people during his teaching practice as a therapist that it was bad to exercise excessively and shortchange the body. He is still convinced that one should exercise well-balanced regularly, instead of going out of control now and then, or once a week and then overloading the body.

Photo by Daniel Reche on Pexels.com

The last few years, what he taught is more confirmed by medical magazines. A new study, published in the monthly peer-reviewed medical journal Nature Medicine, indicates that truly tiny quantities of commonplace activity can have a serious impact on your health, if done with a little added oomph.

Marcus Ampe also believes that one should train or exercise both body and mind and balance them with one’s personality. As such, it is already good exercise to have a daily walk in nature. Daily, we in a sort of way should consider how we move, sitting straight, walking straight, and breathing calmly. At the same time, we should consider how we want to see ourselves and how we orient and describe ourselves in the world. It is not bad to have our thoughts wander when walking.

Photo by Laura Tancredi on Pexels.com

Mr Ampe is convinced our world is going to face a big problem with the younger generations because they have become a sitting society where youngsters eat too many damaging foods. He fears that these overweight youngsters will later cost our community a lot of money by suffering from all kinds of diseases of affluence, such as chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including Parkinson’s disease, autoimmune diseases, strokes, most heart diseases, most cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease and others. Every year about 2.8 million die from being overweight. High cholesterol accounts for roughly 2.6 million deaths and 7.5 million die because of high blood pressure. An increasing proportion (more than one-third by some estimates) of the U.S. population is currently overweight, and health problems associated with it are increasing.

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

Mr Ampe is convinced that even small reductions in excess weight can improve health. Even though it takes a lot of time and energy to lose a few kilocalories, you can steadily work on ‘bodybuilding’ by walking or jogging regularly and doing a variety of physical exercises throughout the day, where even climbing stairs can help.

Today more scientists are convinced that leisure-time exercise, like gyms, running, or competitive sports have many health benefits. For professor Emmanuel Stamatakis this was good reason to examine 25,000 people in the UK, aged between 40 and 69, who don’t exercise – or, at least, don’t think that they do.  For a medical study, led by a team at the University of Sydney, they wore activity trackers on their wrists, and were then monitored for almost seven years.

The NHS recommends that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity (a couple of doubles tennis matches, say), or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (one-and-a-bit aerobics classes) every week to reduce our risk of heart disease or stroke. But, says Stamatakis,

“we understand less about the health potential of those activities that are done as part of daily living and which often reach vigorous intensity… stair climbing, bursts of very fast walking, walking uphill, walking carrying backpack or shopping bags, vigorous domestic housework or gardening.”

For some the results of the study were surprising.

Photo by Polina Tankilevitch on Pexels.com

Engaging in just three to four bouts of VILPA (vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity) a day, even if each bout lasted only for between one and two minutes, was associated with a nearly 40 per cent reduction in overall mortality risk (including from cancer) and nearly a 50 per cent reduction in cardiovascular disease related deaths. Most interesting of all, says Stamatakis, is this:

“there is a good chance that participants in this study did not even know that they were doing vigorous intensity physical activity.”

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

Ultimately, the outcome of this study should convince doctors, but also ordinary citizens, to start paying more attention to what such normal daily activities may be. During the day, this way everyone can easily build certain ‘exercises’ into their routine, taking the stairs instead of the lift, for example. So one doesn’t need to throw a lot of money against an exercise session. If one looks around, one can find plenty of opportunities to exercise the body.

“Many day-to-day activities can be converted to a VILPA burst, just by tweaking its intensity,”

says Stamatakis. In other words:

“do it in a more energetic and vigorous way.”

How to tell if you’ve stepped up the pace with sufficient intensity?

“The first sign is getting out of breath, followed by an increase in heart rate, both of which should be felt after about 15-30 seconds, depending on the person’s fitness level and whether the starting point is rest, light, or moderate-intensity activity.”

says Stamatakis. If you can still sing, your activity is light in intensity, he says. Able to speak? You’ve hit moderate intensity.

“When we can hardly speak a few words, we are hitting the vigorous intensity zone,”

he says.

“This is high quality movement, with great health enhancing potential if repeated regularly.”

If that sounds like your kind of exercise regime, then read on.
