A Lost Lady by Willa Cather

Hello Peoples! Though I have not read all of her books, I have read a few of them and O Pioneers is my favorite. She was an interesting author. I really don’t know how to describe this story. I’ve owned the book a long time. I bought it when I was in the Classics Club. It was one of the classics I intended to read, but didn’t. It was the next title I drew out of the book bag. I will stumble my way through a review.

This is the story of Captain and Mrs. Forrester, primarily Mrs. Forrester and Niel Herbert. Neil is also our primary storyteller. He is a young man, the nephew of Judge Pommeroy. The characters live in Sweet Water, a small railroad town in the west.

Mrs Forrester is a lovely lady. She’s pretty, feminine and seems to be admired by the small community. Niel is very fond of her. Her charm and beauty seems to be a central part of the story. Mrs. Forrester and Niel have an interesting friendship, she confides in him frequently.

Captain Forrester is in the railroad business. I liked him. He was a quiet man who enjoyed gardening. In the beginning, the Captain and Mrs. Forrester traveled to Denver for the winters, however, later in the story they remained in Sweet Water year around.

The couple decline in the story. The Captain looses his wealth. The lives of this couple and their decline is symbolic.

Have you read any books by Willa Cather? Which books? I’d like to read your thoughts below.

Woman of the Year (1942)

Spencer Tracy Katherine Hepburn

Hello Peoples! Rick picked up this movie somewhere. I don’t know where. Today we sat down, made ourselves comfy and watched it. I am going to say, this is a cute movie! 🎥🍿🎬 Oh! Excuse me. Rick says the movie isn’t cute. *haha*

There is great chemistry between our lovers in this romantic comedy. Spencer Tracy is a sportswriter. He’s a great guy and a good character in this film. I thought he did a superb job as the romantic lead. Our leading lady is energic and effervescent in this film. She was great. However, keep her out of the kitchen! 😮 She is a high-profile political writer/political correspondence. She has good family ties. The two fall in love and get married. 💍🔔 Sigh. ❤️

There are challenges to overcome as a result of their occupations, but it works out in the end.

I highly recommend this film. I enjoyed it.

When the Bishop Needs An Alibi by Vannetta Chapman

Good morning Peoples! I don’t normally read Amish stories. I don’t really like them. However, one day I was perusing a used book store and found When the Bishop Needs An Alibi. I purchased it. It was included in my book bag and this was the next title I drew out of said bag. It was good!

Bishop Henry Lapp is enjoying the day with his dog. He has his binoculars; he’s bird watching! Unexpectedly Henry and his dog discover the body of a woman. When the authorities start to investigate, Henry becomes the one and only suspect. Well! That’s just nonsense.

Henry has a gift. His friend Emma encourages him to use said gift to assist in the solving of the dreadful crime.

Henry is very personable and has support. No one who lives in their community believes Henry is a killer. Henry’s closet friends get together to solve this evil deed.

The story moves along at a good pace, the chapters are short, the characters are lovable. Toward the end of the book, it gets pulse-pounding. Happy Sleuthing!

Gear, Grills &Guns by Tonya Kappes

A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery

Hello Peoples! This was definitely a new to me author. I’ve seen her books everywhere, but Gear, Grills, & Guns was the first book I’ve read by this author. This book wasn’t in my book bag. A friend bought it at a used book sale and asked me to read it before she did.

Wendell Holliday is shot dead. Someone is standing over the body with a smoking gun! If that isn’t rude, a camper is killed when his camper is burned to the ground. These killers are so rude!!! Mae West and her friends have some sleuthing to do.

I didn’t really like the beginning of the tale. It was slow and boring. However, I was learning how to take care of a campgrounds. Once unfortunate Wendell was shot, the story picked up and I liked it. Mae West is one busy lady. She meets herself coming and going! The ending of the mystery was comical. I laughed.

Overall, I did like it. I might read another in the series. Oh yes! I almost forgot to mention. This is not a spooky book. It’s not creepy or scary. It’s ok. I did solve it.

Montana Hidden Deception by Amity Steffen

Hello Peoples! Well, I finished another book from my book bag. There are only six titles left in the bag! Wow! If I hadn’t put together this book bag, I don’t know when I would have read all the books that were included in it??? I need to put together a list, favorites from the depth of the bag???

Nina Montgomery is a nurse who enjoys photography. She’s in the woods of Montana when she sees a man burying something in the dirt. She remains hidden, but she soon realizes, even though he didn’t see her, this man knows who she is and is after her.

Detective Mateo Bianchi comes to her aid and they work together to solve the mystery.

I liked it. It was a good fast-paced mystery. Nina was a good character. I laughed, a couple of times, at something she said. She has a great little therapy dog.

Foul Play Suspected by John Wyndham

Hello Peoples! Well, John Wyndham is, without a doubt, a new to me author. I had never heard of him. Rick knew who he was, he’s familiar with Wyndham’s sci-fi. Wyndham wrote, The Day of the Triffids (1951), The Kraken Wakes (1953), The Chrysalids (1955), and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957). Have you read any of these books? I tried to watch The Day of the Triffids. That’s right, it’s a movie. I quit watching it. It was creepy.

This was the next book from my book bag. I don’t know how long it’s been waiting for me to read it. I’m not even going to think about it.

In Foul Play Suspected, Phyllida Shiffer is returning home from India. She is expecting her father to be eagerly waiting to see her again. When she arrives home, the house is entirely closed up and locked like a bank vault. The furniture is covered, and Dad is not there. She begins asking questions of people she knows in the community, however, she arrives at a place where it is necessary to contact Scotland Yard.

I like this book. From the start, it grabbed my attention and held it. I was completely absorbed in the mystery. And a mystery it was. Phyllida’s father was a scientist and he was missing and his assistant was missing too.

Her cousin Derek was my favorite character. He had a fun, humorous nature.

I did like it and I recommend it.

Cold Case Tracker by Maggie K. Black

Hello Peoples! I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather. Rick pulled out Cold Case Tracker from my book bag and it is an excellent choice.

Gemma has disappeared! Not good. Her brother is Jackson Locke. He is a Sergeant in the RCMP and he has a K-9 partner, Hudson! I love Hudson. What a great dog. Jackson and Hudson work together wonderfully. Amy Scout is Gemma’s best friend. She is overseeing the bookstore Gemma owns while Gemma is missing. Suddenly, without apparent reason, Amy is under attack and the attacker seems to want her dead. Amy is also very pregnant. Jackson and Hudson are there for Amy and are doing everything they can to protect Amy and her unborn baby. They both believe Gemma is alive, but are puzzled as to the why’s, where’s and whats???

This book is good! It was written at a great pace and I had difficulty putting it down. I liked the characters and loved Hudson. What a great dog! It’s set in Northern Ontario with forest, a lake and a cottage, not to forget, the bookstore. Enjoy! Happy Reading!
