Exploring emotions through bookish play
Exploring emotions through bookish play
Exploring emotions through bookish play written by Sheila O’Reilly @rascals_and_rainbows Anyone who follows my Instagram account will know that I am a huge fan of bookish play. Fictional stories provide opportunities for children to explore and develop all sorts of skills including social and emotional development and language development. As Mental Health Awareness week draws to a close, I thought it might be helpful to share some stories and bookish play ideas that I have used for exploring emotions with my two girls.

Spring play ideas Written by Sheila O’ReillyWww.instagram.com/rascals_and_rainbowsWe’ve finally made it to Spring! I’ve never been happier to leave the Winter months behind. It’s been a long haul with lockdown and miserable weather. The days are so much brighter and signs of Spring are popping up everywhere with gorgeous daffodils and tulips and birdsong. I love Spring-themed activities and thought a blog sharing some of our Spring play might be useful😀.

Developing Spelling Skills Written by Sheila O’ReillyWww.instagram.com/rascals_and_rainbowsFollowing on from my previous phonics blog, I thought it would be helpful to explore how to develop your child’s spelling skills. Early phonics is the first crucial step in improving your child’s spelling ability, and in turn develop their word attack and reading skills. In order for children to become good spellers, they need to develop a range of strategies and know when to apply them.

Keeping fit and healthyPart 1: Children’s mental health. Written by Sheila O’ReillyWww.instagram.com/rascals_and_rainbows Well it may be a new year but here we are back in another lockdown! Working from home, juggling parenting and homeschooling our children is quite a tall order for us all and no doubt the pandemic is taking its toll on our stress levels and mental health. We must remember too that this time is so challenging for our little people. They are missing their usual school routines, extra-curricular activities, mixing with their friends and getting out and about as a family. My own girls have accepted the changes in routine surprisingly well, but there have been tears and frustrations at times too when birthday celebrations have been cancelled, trips to the play park aren’t possible and swimming lessons or trips to the cinema are missed.

The Benefits of Playing Games By Sheila O ‘Reilly @rascals_and_rainbowsI introduced games to both my girls at age 3 and they really enjoy playing together. Board games, card games and games like Hape Ocean Rescue, are a great way to explore winning and losing with your child and an opportunity to teach them about playing fairly, following rules, taking turns and dealing with success and also disappointment.

The Benefits of Bookish Play and using Story Sacks Written by Sheila O’ReillyWww.instagram.com/rascals_and_rainbowsBookish play is a wonderful way of introducing books to your little one and will generally keep their attention for much longer than just reading the story. Children love to play! Fun and interactive activities based on their story book can spark their imagination and really bring a story to life.

Outdoor Maths Play By Sheila O’Reilly Instagram: @rascals_and_rainbows 8 weeks into Lockdown and Home Learning is still going strong (fuelled by copious amounts of coffee for mummy and some sweet treats for my little rascals!). It’s definitely a more successful experience when learning is activity-based and lots of fun.

Supporting children at home with phonics By Sheila O'Reilly @Rascals_and_rainbows on Instagram Phonics is based on the fact that man spoke before he wrote! Phonological skills refers to hearing sounds in words. When we are teaching phonics to children, we teach them to 'Segment' - The ability to access the individual sounds in words; and 'Blend' - The ability to push sounds together in words; and 'Phoneme Manipulation' - Changing sounds in words. For example, say 'Stop' without the 's'. Say 'ten'. Say it again and change the 't' to 'p'.
