The benefits of expanding the social housing sector include built-in limits on profit-motivated rent increases and eviction, long-term affordability, protection from predatory speculation in disinvested communities,2 and more democratic control over housing resources. As the Right to the City Alliance succinctly framed the issue, this vision is “rooted in the belief that housing is a human right, not a commodity to maximize profits.”
