What speciality did you match into?

Radiology! I matched at the same time into a Transitional Year and a radiology residency program. The Transitional Year is my required intern year, where I rotate through different specialties before starting radiology. After that one year, I move straight into my radiology residency for PGY-2 through PGY-5.

What is a Transitional Year (TY)?

It’s a one-year program where a intern year resident physician rotates through multiple specialties (like medicine, surgery, and electives) before starting their advanced residency—mine is Diagnostic Radiology. Other examples of advanced specialties include: Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Radiation Oncology, Neurology

Is Diagnostic Radiology Competitive ?

Yes, radiology is considered a competitive specialty, but the level of competition can vary from year to year based on the interest of medical students in the field. For instance, some years may be more competitive than others. On average, matched U.S. MD applicants in radiology have a higher USMLE Step 2 CK score of around 256 compared to the overall average. In contrast, dermatology has an average Step 2 score of approximately 257, but is generally considered even more competitive due to its limited number of spots and higher research expectations.

Will diagnostic radiologists be replaced by AI?

According to the leading radiology societies, such as ACR and RSNA, AI is a tool to assist, not replace, radiologists, and that human oversight, judgment, and accountability are essential in clinical practice. AI is expected to automate routine tasks (like lesion detection or report drafting) and improve efficiency and accuracy, but radiologists will still be needed to interpret results, manage complex cases, make clinical decisions, and ensure safety and ethical care.

Diagnostic vs Interventional Radiology: what’s the difference?

Diagnostic radiologists interpret imaging techniques like X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds to diagnose conditions and perform minimally invasive procedures. Interventional radiologists, on the other hand, focus more heavily on procedures to manage conditions and require additional training in these areas. If you’re interested in interventional radiology (IR), you can pursue an integrated residency program or a diagnostic radiology residency followed by an IR fellowship.

Radiology in the United States remains predominantly male, with only approximately 25–28% of practicing radiologists identifying as women. Additionally, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities constitute a small fraction of radiologists compared to their representation in the general population. Notably, about 60% of radiologists are white, while Black and Hispanic physicians are underrepresented. Women are even less represented in leadership positions, with only around 23% of residency program directors and approximately 9–10% of department chairs being women.

thoughts on Pritzker SOM?

Overall, Pritzker was a really solid medical school experience for me. I found my people, built a strong support system, and felt genuinely supported by peers. As a Black student, medicine is challenging anywhere, but the representation and community at Pritzker made it a bit easier to navigate. The school has strong resources, great peer mentorship, research embedded in the curriculum, and a solid match record. Like most places, faculty mentorship takes effort and it’s still a PWI, but it prepared me well. I’m a bit removed now and the curriculum has changed, so current students are the best source for specifics.
