Open Our Eyes Lord

So one night the king of Aram sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city. When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. (‭2 Kings‬ ‭6‬:‭14-17‬ NLT)

There is so much that can be said about this excerpt from 2 Kings.

1. My quick observation is this probably happens way more often then we care to admit or know.  What?  Our fear and trepidation of our common enemy!  We should always be taking these kinds of needs to the Lord.  He is the Author and Finisher of our faith instead of trying to figure it out on our own.

2. My second observation is we/I don’t pray for the Lord to open our eyes enough.  How different things would be if we were able to see things the way He sees things.  I am not just referring to when in need.  What about how He sees the people walking down the street, in the grocery store, or at the gas station?  If we truly saw people the way He sees them we would live differently.

My prayer today is Elisha’s prayer: “O Lord, open his/my eye and let him/me see!”

Faith or Fear?

“Is it not my family God has chosen? Yes, he has made an everlasting covenant with me. His agreement is arranged and guaranteed in every detail. He will ensure my safety and success. (‭2 Samuel‬ ‭23‬:‭5‬ NLT)

This verse is the second last verse in 2 Samuel under the title or heading of “David’s Last Words.”

I choose this scripture today because even in David’s death, his mouth was speaking in faith.

If you think about all of the life experience David saw.  If you think about every encounter he endured.  He is an amazing character in history.  He is in the linage of Jesus Christ.  And the second to last verse in scripture spoken by him is one of faith.

Here are my lessons for the day:

1. I want to be like David.  I want to be exuding faith to the very end.

2. I want to have as much faith as David.  I want to believe the promises of scripture the way David believed the promises the Lord made to Him.  The promises in scripture are just as much true for me today as the promises David had from the Lord.  So, why do I not hold onto them the same?  I want to change that!

3. I not only want to believe, but I want to confess and live them out before my family and friends.  I want them to see the faithfulness of the Lord.  Obviously my words will never be recorded in scripture.  But, my words may be remembered by those who are close to me.  What will they remember?  Will they remember a crusty and bitter old man, or will they remember a person of faith.

I can promise you this.  I would not be moved by the words of David if these words were the only time he ever spoke of his faith in the Lord.  David had a life of faith, trust, and relationship with him.  It was seen by all, and therefore his words carry credence and weight.  The only way our words of faith will carry the same weight is if we live them every day.  David made mistakes and so will you and I, but what does the whole of our life say?  Faith or Fear?

For Our Own Good

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? (‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭10‬:‭12-13‬ NIV)

Nothing has changed!

My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad!

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. (‭Psalm‬ ‭27‬:‭1-5‬ NIV)

Why fight?

It Is Not Always Easy!

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (‭II Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭6-7, NKJV)

It is not always going to be easy!

No Hidden Agenda

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “ It is because we have no bread.” But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remembered? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” “Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?” (‭Mark‬ ‭8‬:‭14-21‬ NKJV)

Why do I revert to the negative?

Peace in the Storms of Life

On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (‭Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭35-40‬ NKJV)

What a moment this must have been.
