Where is Your Trust?

But when Rehoboam was firmly established and strong, he abandoned the Law of the LORD, and all Israel followed him in this sin. (‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬ NLT)

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬ NLT)

Two significant warnings about where our peace and trust should come from this morning. The things of this life can and will fail us, but Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God never will!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5-6‬ NLT)

Is It Worth It?

And Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to Bethel.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!” So they went down together to Bethel.

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to Jericho.” But Elisha replied again, “As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together to Jericho.

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to the Jordan River.” But again Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together. (‭2 Kings‬ ‭2‬:‭2, 4, 6‬ NLT)

Are we willing to go after the things of the Lord like Elisha, or do we give up at the first sign of trouble?

Are we willing to go after the things of the Lord like Elisha, or do we give up when it takes to long?

Are we willing to go after the things of the Lord like Elisha, or do we give up when it doesn’t go our way?

The prophets told him to quit; It took longer then he expected, and there is no way it happened as he expected. Yet he persevered to the end, and he received his reward.

I’m committed to the end regardless!

I’m going to persevere regardless of what it looks like!

My trust and reward is in Him!

Against All Odds!

9Once an Ethiopian named Zerah attacked Judah with an army of 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots. They advanced to the town of Mareshah, 10so Asa deployed his armies for battle in the valley north of Mareshah.11Then Asa cried out to the lord his God, “O  lord, no one but you can help the powerless against the mighty! Help us, O  lord our God, for we trust in you alone. It is in your name that we have come against this vast horde. O  lord, you are our God; do not let mere men prevail against you!”

12So the lord defeated the Ethiopians in the presence of Asa and the army of Judah, and the enemy fled.
(2 Chronicles 14:9-12 NLT)
The odds are always in your favor if you serve the Lord.
I have no idea what you are facing today. I have no idea the trials you are in middle of.  What I do know is Asa didn’t stand a chance.  Zerah had a million soldiers!  Asa cried out to the Lord, and the Lord rescued Him.
My only thought today is, have you asked the Lord for help?  He is the only God who can deliver you from what seems impossible.  He makes all things possible!

Don’t Pick and Choose When To Obey

8But the man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of everything you own, I would not go with you. I would not eat or drink anything in this place. 9For the lord gave me this command: ‘You must not eat or drink anything while you are there, and do not return to Judah by the same way you came.’” 10So he left Bethel and went home another way.

11As it happened, there was an old prophet living in Bethel, and his sons came home and told him what the man of God had done in Bethel that day. They also told their father what the man had said to the king. 12The old prophet asked them, “Which way did he go?” So they showed their father which road the man of God had taken. 13“Quick, saddle the donkey,” the old man said. So they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it.

14Then he rode after the man of God and found him sitting under a great tree. The old prophet asked him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
“Yes, I am,” he replied.
15Then he said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some food.”
16“No, I cannot,” he replied. “I am not allowed to eat or drink anything here in this place. 17For the lord gave me this command: ‘You must not eat or drink anything while you are there, and do not return to Judah by the same way you came.’”
18But the old prophet answered, “I am a prophet, too, just as you are. And an angel gave me this command from the lord: ‘Bring him home with you so he can have something to eat and drink.’” But the old man was lying to him. 19So they went back together, and the man of God ate and drank at the prophet’s home.
24and the man of God started off again. But as he was traveling along, a lion came out and killed him. His body lay there on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it.   (1 Kings 13:8-19,24 NLT)
I have only a couple of thoughts today, and they will be brief:
1. Good for the first prophet for being a man of God, and sharing the hard truth with the king.  This was a difficult thing to do, and could have cost him his life.  I hope I have the same gumption if ever called upon.
2. Good for him for standing up to the king, and not staying to eat with him. He heard the voice of the Lord, and obeyed it.  Again, either choice could have led to his death.
3. What was he thinking when he stayed to eat with someone he didn’t know? He did the right things when it was hard-twice, but when it was easy he caved?  It really doesn’t make sense to me.
4. The lesson is, if God says it obey it.  It doesn’t matter who is talking to you.  It could be your pastor who also hears from the Lord.  It could be a parent who also hears from the Lord.  It could be your spouse who also hears from the Lord.  If you hear something specific from the Lord, obey it regardless of what anyone else is telling you.  Remember we are accountable for our actions not what anyone else does.  If God says, we should believe it and obey it!

Faith and Money

Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭11‬:‭24-25‬ NLT)

Word from the wisest man ever to live?  So why is it so hard?  Because ultimately we trust Him, and believe in Him up until it costs us something. This is often where our faith is separated. Do we really trust Him, and believe His promises, or is this a nice group of people we meet with on Sunday mornings?  The truth is we don’t have an option but to trust Him with our money as well as with the rest of our life. Our giving just tends to be an external show of our internal thoughts.

This is not a preacher trying to get people to give me more at church because it is so much more then just that. Giving on Sunday mornings  is part of it, but it includes all kinds of stuff that you will probably never get a tax break on. Giving away your stuff, or helping people in need is never run through the church. However it may be how He is asking you to give. I am preaching to myself today. I want to be better at giving whenever He asks, and not just when we have extra.

What Do They See?

In times of trouble, may the LORD answer your cry. May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm. May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings. Interlude May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the LORD answer all your prayers. Now I know that the LORD rescues his anointed king. He will answer him from his holy heaven and rescue him by his great power. Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the LORD our God. Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm. Give victory to our king, O LORD! Answer our cry for help. (‭Psalms‬ ‭20‬:‭1-9‬ NLT)

This particular is written about David, and not by David.

My thoughts this morning are simple.

Are we living our lives in such a way that those around us see the hand of the Lord?  Clearly the writer here could see how the Lord was the deliverer of David.

As you go about your business and busyness of the day today, look for the presence and touch of the Lord, and then point it out by giving Him glory. I am not asking you to jump on a table and start preaching.  Rather, a simple thank you Lord for the sunshine today.  Thank you Lord for my wonderful vehicle that took me to my wonderful job.  Thank you for my wonderful spouse and children.  Most of the world doesn’t see the simple things as a blessing from the Lord.  If they did it would make the big things easier to see.

Some trust in chariots and horses, but we boast int he name of the Lord our God!

My Heart Hurts

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (‭II Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭3-4‬ NKJV)

I am thankful for passages of scripture like this one!

Triple A Plan!

The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.

But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. (‭Joshua‬ ‭9‬:‭14-16, 18-19‬ NIV)

Always live out the “TRIPLE A” plan!

Are We Learning or Repeating History?

When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. (‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭6‬:‭10-12‬ NIV)

A reminder that it is all His anyway!

Can We Limit Jesus?

Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. (‭Mark‬ ‭6‬:‭1-6‬ NIV)

What an unfortunate series of events!
