clean and simple monday is hot!

This weeks clean and simple Monday challenge at  SCS is to use the colors daffodil, poppy, peach and white.  When I pulled these colors out I thought – hot!!    They’re bright, cheery and remind me of summer.  I hope they will bring a little warmth to wherever you are! 

The first card uses a stamp that I have always had trouble coloring, but absolutely LOVE it just stamped in color with no additional coloring.  The image is this beautiful Peony image (from Flourishes).    I started by taking a piece of daffodil paper and stamping the text background in peach. Oh yes, that text background – from Papertrey?  I could probably use on every card and never get tired of it!   The trim and button are from my stash of “stuff” and I have no idea what brand they are.   I sponged the edges of this panel in peach as well and stamped the Peony in red over the text.   The base card is daffodil and I sponged a bunch of peach along the edges.  It really changes the look of the daffodil cardstock and reminds me of summer sunsets.

The next card uses the same colors but has a completely different feel – much cleaner.    I stamped the flower (from the Autumn Leaves Flowers set) in red and colored lightly with both daffodil and peach.   The pearl in the center of the flower was colored with a peach copic marker.   I drew a line with a multiliner and stamped the sentiment (from Mark’s Finest Papers) in red as well.  This panel was mounted on peach and red and attached to a daffodil card base.     So you see – these same colors provide very different looks!

grey is the new black

That is what all the fashion and design magazines are saying, so I figured I’d be trendy with today’s clean and simple card.

This weeks clean and simple challenge at SCS is to use “flourishy” type things on your card.  I started with a piece of grey cardstock and embossed part of a flourish image in white on it.  The bird was stamped and embossed in white on a piece of the same grey cardstock then cut out and popped up on the main panel.

I sponged the edges of the grey panel in white then mounted it on white cardstock.  Because it looked a little plain I took a scrap piece of the grey, punched it with a scallop border punch and added it to the bottom.

From here I was not sure which color to use for the base card and after trying several different colors I settled on this textured lilac card from Bazzill.  I like the look of lilac and grey together.  A piece of silk white ribbon with a pearl brad was added at the corner.

Paper:  Bazzill textured, Stampin Up grey, generic white
Ink:  CTMH white pigment, Palette Charcoal
Stamps:  Autumn Leaves Swirls, Flourishes Birds and Vine
Other:  May Arts Silk Ribbon, Bazzill pearl brads, white embossing powder

you’re the cream in my coffee

There is something about coffee stamps that I just love – and I love this little sentiment!    Because of the sentiment I decided to go for more of a masculine card.  And it does double duty because I  am following the Mojo Monday sketch for this week.

The base card is one of the darker SU blues – but I don’t know which one.  The brown designer paper is from the 7gypsies Nottinghill collection.  The lower part of the card is the SU paper stamped with some Autumn Leaves – Flourishes collection stamps.

The coffee cup and sentiment are from a set called Coffee Cake from TPC Studio.  The coffee cup was stamped in Memento Rich Cocoa and colored with copics.

The only brown ribbon that seemed to work well was this brown velvet.  I only have a little bit left of this pretty ribbon.

Did you notice the little heart punch over the cup?  It was one of those $1 punches from Michaels that I picked up a couple of years ago around Valentine’s Day.    I went back and forth about adding it to the card and in the end I am glad I did!

clean and simple with orange

Yesterday’s clean and simple challenge was to use orange.  It’s not a color I use often, but after looking through my supplies it was clear I had enough of it to go around!

The designer paper is from Basic Grey’s Sugar Rush – and there are so many colors in this particular series that you’d be able to do a card in just about any color! 

I chose the distressed orange dot paper with the floral amethyst colored paper behind it.  I lightly stamped a flourishy image from the Autumn Leaves Swirls set in amethyst ink in the background.  The orange flower is a prima and the button (from JoAnn’s) started out white, until I colored it with copic marker #BV02 to match the paper.  The orange ribbon is a twill type and was from an old Basic Grey ribbon kit that I’ve had for years.  The white cardstock is Bazzill Swiss dot – already embossed!!

Take a close look at the sentiment from Papertrey.  I stamped it on a piece of amethyst paper from the same BG series, then adhered it to a clear tag/charm – these are from Tim Holtz and come in a package that has 16 different shapes and sizes with 48 pieces in all.  I wasn’t sure how this would look but once it was attached it to the card I was really pleased.  The thickness of the tag/charm just adds a little bit more than merely an acetate overlay.

The Sring issue of Take Ten magazine Issued a challenge to all readers to submit cards using their design sketch on page 25 of that issue. I’ve participated in their challenges before and have had cards published, so I thought I would try again. Their deadline is May 1 – here are my submissions.

Cut away

This month we tried another technique – cutting away at part of an image to allow the background paper to show through. Alice showed us this technique using a butterfly image and this is my take…..I started with a piece of glossy card stock that I had previously colored using reinkers and water. I embossed the dragonfly images (company unknown for the larger ones, SU for the small) and stamped the cattails (Stampscapes). Using an exacto knife, I cut away at the larger dragonfly wings, to allow the blue card stock to show through. The purple background is stamped with canvas (SU), along with swirls and flowers (Autumn Leaves). The “imagine” embellishment is from Making Memories and is mounted on an oval die cut from sizzix.

Yes, it’s been a while since my last post, but we had family visiting from Chicago and were busy “offline”!

Now for the latest creation…I’m doing more experimenting with watercoloring – just love the look. This card started with Buckaroo Blue cardstock on which I stamped the Swirls set from Rhonna Farrer – this is just a wonderful set I picked up at Target for less than $10. I used a white gel pen to accent portions of the swirls. For the main images, I used Strathmore 80lb watercolor paper. The images were stamped with black Staz on then colored with Coral and Banana reinkers mixed with Winsor & Newton blending medium for watercolor. I used about three layers of colors, building up the intensity as I went on. A light wash of banana was also applied in the background. I would use a heavier weight paper next time as the 80 lb is a little thinner than what I am used to, and less blending medium as it diluted the colors more than I had expected. I mounted the images on Coral, then Banana and added a ribbon from Hobby Lobby.
