Book Description:

The Charlie Chaloosy book series kicks off with its inaugural offering, Charlie Chaloosy is Often Quite Choosy.

The first book focuses on Charlie’s experiences as he learns lessons, gains new experiences, and grows up in a world that happens to rhyme. The story is told through the use of a playful rhyme scheme and enhanced with beautifully colored illustrations of Charlie tackling new adventures in whimsical detail. The book ends with Charlie providing two pages for the reader to become an author by writing their own story.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Charlie Chaloosy is Often Quite Choosy is such a sweet book for children. Charlie Chaloosy is pretty choosy about everything. He finds one thing he likes and he sticks with it. Over and over. He likes playing with one thing or doing one activity. He’s bad when it comes to eat because he chooses his food and that’s all he eats.

The beautiful illustrations throughout the book brings the story to life in pictures. I love how the pictures go with the words of each page. This is a beautiful book inside and out.

I love that this cute book teaches children to try new things. Go on adventures that they will enjoy. This a book that will benefit many children. If you are a parent or teacher of a choosy child, you need this book. And the choosy child needs it as well. I’m giving this book 4½ stars.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Meet the Author:

My passion for children’s literature stems from 30+ years in education and my re-entry into bedtime stories with the addition of my beautiful grandchildren. I created Charlie as a means for children to learn with Charlie by having a growth mindset when it comes to facing new experiences and learning new things. Children live in a world that is traveling ever faster and my desire is to help them slow down and enjoy childhood through the adventures of Charlie Chaloosy. I hope children have fun with Charlie while engaging their minds through stories that encourage them to read, write, illustrate, and dream a little.

This novel catches your attention in a dramatic opening and holds your attention while you follow the ups and downs of a love story. E.C. Jackson weaves a story of imperfect people working through misunderstandings, secrets, traumas, and just plain stubbornness. In other words, her characters are like many of us! She builds complex characters with believable struggles. Happy endings don’t come easily, but must be worked through with prayer, honest communication, and the willingness to step out in faith and do the right things.

This is a worthy successor to Jackson’s earlier novel, A Gateway to Hope.

MY THOUGHTS ON A LIVING HOPE

Just when she thinks she will marry her chidhood sweetheart, Sadie Mae Cummings is assigned to tutor Lincoln, the new college football running back.

Following Sadie’s life is interesting, and sometimes lard to follow. Her life goes through many ups and downs as she tired to find the life she is searching for. As she decides to move back to her home town after several years away, she meets up with her old fling, Kyle. Unfortunately,  he’s moved on. But as times goes, they just might get together again.

I love Jackson’s books and I love the way she does romance. Her books go a little bit deeper perhaps than a lot of books, but they are still inspirational fiction reads. I like the way she shows faith in the Christian lift in such a subtle like that it doesn’t defend, yet it is a delightful way she describes it all. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

REVIEW FOR THE CERTAIN HOPE BY

Another amazing read from author E. C. Jackson “The Certain Hope.”

PG + M. These books contain mature themes.

The title of this novel is perfectly suitable to its meaning. The Certain Hope is the one of a couple of lonely guys that decided to marry after two weeks of dating. The groom believes that everything will go fine, especially if the bride will do only what he wants. He is control addicted, she is a romantic girl who believes in having met the man of her dreams. Through this behavioral contrast, the author built a great story, focused on the burning topics of marriage, loss and control addiction. In my view, the novel is a little, big literary masterpiece for the underlying meaning that oozes from every chapter. I believe that The Certain Hope deserves to be translated internationally and this thought is my certain hope for the success of this gripping romance novel. — review by Advices books Reviews

Book Description:

Love at first sight. It’s every girl’s dream. But Tara Simpkins is finding out it’s not as easy as it seems. Is this truly the man God sent to be her husband, or is she just desperate to escape her loneliness? The recent loss of both parents has left her reeling, and close friends don’t think she’s in any position to make major life decisions. She and her new-found love are convinced they can live happily ever after in the home of their dreams. His family thinks he’s moving way too fast and might disappoint the kind-hearted woman he’s fallen head over heels for. And then there’s Leah. Leah is supposed to be part of his past, but what if she decides she’s his future? Tara’s match made in Heaven may be over before it truly begins.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE CERTAIN HOPE

The Certain Hope is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Tara Simpkins is having work done on the house after losing both parents and is now along. She really feels alone now, but that’s no reason to fall for one of the guys working on the house. But she was attracted, none the less, but he may not even look at her twice. But we will see.

I like Tara. She has the sweetest personality, and she really likes Luke. But as the story goes on, I begin to see red flags with him and didn’t care for his obnoxious attitude at all. And Tara certainly didn’t need him. Her friends also say the same thing, which pulled Tara in two different ways. I’m not gonna give out more information, so you will need to read the book for yourself.

I have read several books by E. C. Jackson, and I have enjoyed each one. I like the way she writes romance with such feeling, with characters written with layers that tells many flaws, yet with faith in God. I did find this book hard to put down  because I wanted to find out what happened with Tara. I’m giving this book Five Stars. If you love clean Christian fiction romance, you will love this book.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE CONFIDENT HOPE

In The Confident Hope, E. C. Jackson writes a story of marriage and the problems that come after the I Do! Pamela finally got what she wanted in marrying Mark. But was he her true one and only. I had a problem with Pamela going after Mark like she did, when he really wasn’t avaliable. But I guess that’s how some ladies are. It took me a while to warm up to both of these characters, but they grew on me. Both Mark and Pamela had lots to learn about marriage. They were both so determined to have their way it caused friction in their marriage. I found that lack of communication was also a big part of their problems, and both were to stubborn to acknowledge it.

I do like the way Jackson uses this story to show the twists and turns, ups and downs and all the other differences marriage brings. This would be a great book for anyone, especially a new married couple, or perhaps someone getting married. There are lots of lessons to learn in this book and E. C. Jackson does an excellent job writing this book. It’s one of my favorite in the series. Anyone who enjoys a good clean inspirational books will enjoy this one. I’m giving it Five Stars.

Book Description:

Most sleepovers are simple. Food, fun, and pillow fights. But sixteen-year-old Karen Duncan has bigger plans for her slumber party. Family troubles have changed her over the past year, and she’s no longer the petty, selfish girl she used to be. Now she’s ready to shake things up with her friends. The guest list comes as a surprise to some and a slap in the face to others. This popular girl has invited some not-so-popular guests. Even more shocking, she’s left out some of the girls she’s hung out with since middle school.

Diane and Evette are outsiders, nervous about being stuck in a house with the same girls who tease them at school.

Kathy, Lisa, and Joann come to the party with the confidence of the in-crowd, but they’re masking inner-turmoil that is bound to surface.

Sandy and Angela are usually the voices of reason…usually. And then there’s Linda, the friend that got away. She may not ever forgive the girls who abandoned her years ago. Karen hopes to change her mind. Her agenda is ambitious, and it could spell disaster. But Karen is convinced God will use this party to spark a new beginning for everyone involved.

This companion book to A Living Hope gives us the inspired story Sadie Cummings wrote for the girls of Shiatown.

Meet the Author:
E. C. Jackson began her writing career with the full-length play “Pajama Party.” Thirty-one years later, she adapted the play into Pajama Party: The Story, a companion book to the second book in the five-book standalone Hope series.

Jackson’s favorite pastime is reading fiction. She enjoys taking the journey along with the characters in the books. That also led to her unorthodox approach to story writing. Her vision for each book she writes is to immerse readers into the storyline so they become connected with each character.

“The Write Way: A Real Slice of Life” is the slogan on her Facebook author page. She feels that if every person reading her books feels connected to the characters, her job is done.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Book Description

Twenty years ago, several people were murdered in Des Moines, and the only evidence left behind was a snowman ornament hanging ominously on a tree in the victims’ front lawns. With a suspect behind bars, the killings have come to an end–or so everyone thought. But now crimes with a similar MO are happening in a small Iowa town, and a local detective believes the killer is back and ready to strike again.

With little time left on the clock before they have another murder on their hands, private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair must work alongside Tony’s detective father to find evidence that will uncover an evil that has survived far too long. As the danger mounts and the suspect closes in, it will take all they have to catch a killer–before he catches one of them.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Wow! What an exciting read. After reading Nancy Mehl’s first book in this series, Cold Pursuit, I have been waiting to read Cold Threat, and it was an awesome mystery thriller for sure. I was so hooked on reading this book I read late into the night and jumped at any noise I heard.

This story goes back many years when people were murdered in Des Moines, and just maybe the killer is still around, it’s just that Tony’s father can’t convince anyone else, so he ask for Tony and Ryland’s help. Tony and Ryland are fabulous characters created by author Nancy Mehl, as well as so many other characters Mehl created to make up this story. I think this story is pretty fast paced, but then the time line for the killings made the book seem like it was at a slower pace. Either way, this is an awesome book to read.

I enjoyed following Ryland and Tony as they made their way through trying to find the person responsible for so many murders, and why. What motivation did this person have. Mehl created such great details for each scene in the book I felt as if it was playing out in my little community. I have always enjoyed Nancy Mehl’s writing style, just as I read enjoyed it in this book. And I’m telling you folks, she can write some scenes that will have you looking out your windows and locking your doors. And I love it!

If you enjoy reading a fast-paced thriller that will have you biting your nails, you need to read Cold Threat. I think it can be read as a stand alone, but reading Cold Pursuit, book one in this Ryland & St. Clair Book (An FBI Profiler Thriller Romantic Suspense Series) I simply can’t wait for Book three to hit the shelves. I’m giving this book Five Stars and I wish I could give it more!

This book tells a story of mindfulness and insight into how the surrounding world can really move you. It unites curiosity, wonder, and marvel to enlighten, surprise, and tickle your deepest spirit. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that bring you the greatest joy.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Vivienne in Paris by Maria Castellucci Moore is the most precious book about a little girl named Vivienne. I so much enjoyed following Vivienne as she takes us on a tour of Paris, with such details as she describes each place she goes. What fun it would be to have someone like Vivienne as a guide through the beautiful Paris.

As I followed this sweet girl, I could feel the presence of the city, as well as taste the cuisine and hear the sights and sounds the city brings. The beautiful illustrations install even more in the minds of the readers just how fabulous this beautiful city is.

I’ve never been to Paris, but this beautiful book has me wanting to go. I think this would be a fantastic book for any child’s library, whether it be in a school room or library, or anywhere a child might be.

Faces in the Window by Andrew Busch and Melinda Busch

About the Book

Book: Faces in the Window

Authors: Andrew Busch and Melinda Busch

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Release Date: October, 2022

Franz Maedler, an officer in the Wehrmacht, loses a leg in Stalingrad and is evacuated just before it becomes impossible to do so. He returns to a desk job with the Army General Staff in Berlin but is deeply conflicted. His father is committed to the Nazi cause, as seems to be his brother Friedrich. Yet his girlfriend Katrin is a devout Christian, as was his now-deceased mother, and his conscience is haunted by things he was a part of on the Eastern Front. He wants to marry Katrin, but she will not agree until he decides who he is and who he follows. Then, unexpectedly, a moment of crisis forces Franz to choose. Will he side with the cross or with the swastika? And what will it cost him?

And now Questions and Answers with the authors

• Why fiction instead of non-fiction?

• Stories are powerful. Our pastor’s most powerful sermons generally begin with the line, “The story is told…” Sometimes it’s the intro to a joke, sometimes a serious story to get us thinking. Jesus taught important lessons in parables. The story makes it memorable and has a way of getting into the heart that non-fiction doesn’t have. (Melinda)

• Most of what I write is actually non-fiction for my work (I am a political science professor). When Melinda and I first got married, we concluded together that it would be a lot of fun to work on a story together. We did not have the idea that led to Faces in the Window until 11 years later, and it was another 13 years before we started writing. Life with three kids was very busy, but we finally did it. She is the real fiction writer, and I came along for the ride. (Andrew)

• Do you like music or silence when you write?

• It depends on the situation. When I’m writing something deeply emotional, I’ll often listen to music that matches whatever emotion I’m trying to convey. Sometimes, music will help me get the flavor of the culture I’m writing about onto the page. If I’m writing a story set in, say, Ireland, I’ll put on one of my Irish folk CDs.

• Almost always silence, unless it is the Christmas season, in which case I will listen to my vinyl records of Christmas carols. (Andrew)

• How did you go about developing the setting(s) for this story?

• We had hoped to travel to Germany to research the setting for this book, but that was in 2020 and of course COVID made it impossible. Instead, we researched heavily. I found old maps of Berlin on the internet. We did lots of historical research in various WW2 texts. We also had a German friend read the story and give us her feedback. When she said that it felt like we had taken her back home, we knew we had been successful with our research. Still, I think we could have made it even better if we’d been able to make the trip we’d planned. (Melinda)

• Also, Melinda spent a year as an exchange student in Germany (though not Berlin), and we have visited a couple of times together, so we had a general sense of the country, and she is fluent in the language. (Andrew)

• Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

• My husband never understood what I meant when I told him the characters had hijacked my story until he actually wrote this novel with me and experienced it for himself. Sometimes they refuse to do what I have planned for them. I’ve learned to follow their lead. When that happens, often it turns out better than what I planned! (Melinda)

• True enough. Melinda had always told me about how her characters would talk with her and take the story in their own direction, but I never really understood until we were writing this book together. Now I do. This is something that doesn’t much happen when one is wring non-fiction about, say, presidential elections. It wouldn’t do for me to tell my co-author “Hey, we need to change the narrative. John McCain told me he won the 2008 election after all.”  It happened to us. For the most part, our characters followed our direction, but not always! (Andrew)

• Which scene was most fun to write? Why?

• I think the scene where Klaus Maedler invited his sons to dinner was the most fun to write. My husband and I were in Google Docs together, and we each took some characters and started writing the scene. We had a general idea of what we wanted to do, but the characters took over and it didn’t end up exactly as we’d planned. We had a lot of fun writing dialogue this way! Of course, then we had to go through the scene, choose a POV character, and make sure the POV was consistent throughout. (Melinda)

• Without giving away too much, either the dinner party hosted by Franz’s father, which Melinda talks about above, or Franz and Friedrich conspiring together to trick Franz’s superior into giving them a truck that they need. They both required strong, witty dialogue, and were both pivotal to the story.

Thank you Andrew and Melinda. I enjoyed reading more about you both and I know my viewers will as well. I look forward to what you have for your readers in the future.

About the Authors

Andrew and Melinda Busch were both born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, and were introduced in 1994 by their junior high school math teacher. They married in 1995 and have three grown children. They now live in Rialto, California.

Andrew teaches American government at Claremont McKenna College in southern California. He has authored or co-authored about two dozen books on American politics, government, and public policy. He received his Ph.D. in Government from the University of Virginia. Melinda is a freelance author who has published numerous short stories and children’s books. She received her Master’s degree in education from Concordia University-Portland. Faces in the Window is their first co-authored book.

More from Andrew and Melinda

We came up with the idea for our book after a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. in 2006, but didn’t start writing it until late 2019. The COVID lock-down gave us a lot of time at home to work on it.

Writing together was fun. Sometimes one of us would draft a section and the other one would revise it and then we would go back and forth until we were satisfied with it. Other times, when there was important dialogue, we would each pick a character, go onto Google Docs, and have the conversation in real time. We had to be sharp, since our characters often found themselves in a tight spot. Though we planned out the story, sometimes the conversations took on a life of their own, and things went in a different direction.

One of us is a poet and an author of children’s books, fantasy stories, and fan fiction, while the other is a professor who has written extensively about American government but has never before dipped his toe into the vasty depths of fiction. Together, we had a great time!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I thoroughly enjoy Behind Her Smile: The Adventures of a Tall Girl from WVA and Her Life as a Stewardess by Beverly Golden Cuevas. This story explores Janie and her life in Parkersburg West Virginia and her signing up to be a Stewardess. A job Janie was surprised she actually was chosen for, but her dreams.come true. As a Stewardess, Janie was able to see the world, something she never dreamed of doing. Her life was drastically changed in many ways. I enjoyed hearing all of the people she met and was able to socialize with during her time with this job.

I was able to connect with Janie a little bit because I grew up in a small Virginia community and my sister lived in West Virginia for a while. Also a girl I went to school that lived in our small neighborhood was a Stewardess. I always thought her life and job was so interesting. This is one reason I chose this book to read and review. I don’t read a lot of memoirs, but I am glad I read this one. It gives first hand knowledge of what it is like to make a drastic change in your life and make it work. I plan to keep this book and read parts of it again as I reflect on Janie’s story.

New Chicks at The Peaceable by Caryl “Grami” McAdoo

About the Book

Book: New Chicks at The Peaceable

Author: Caryl “Grami” McAdoo

Genre: Children’s Animals Picture Book

Release Date: November 23, 2023

Chickens from newborns to old hens have a “pecking order” but bullying is never right! What to do if you’re bullied by those around you!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

New Chicks at The Peaceable reminds me of growing up on my grandparents farm and all of the chickens they had. These chickens in this book are owned by the author, Caryl McAdoo. This is such a sweet story about the chickens on Ms. McAdoo’s farm. One of the things this author talks about is bullying, for this is something chickens can surely do, bullying other Chick’s. It makes quite the scene to see these chickens fighting. I was always too scared to go near because I didn’t want those old mad hens after me.

I do like that the author teaches children about bullying. There is so much of this going on in schools, and children can be very rude an hurt those they bully, usually bringing other of their friends into the mix. A few years ago, a 12 year old grandaughter of my first cousins took her own life buy jumping from some high building materials, all because she had been bullied for so many years, by the same people. It was so heartbreaking, and still is for my family. I always want to tell the story to try and let kids know the dangers of bullying.

The illustrations in the book are beautiful pictures of the chickens the story is about, so yes, this is a real story. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of the Chick’s on the farm, and I know your children will love to see them as well. A lot of conversations can be started by kids from these pictures. In the back of the book you will find some fun chicken facts that you may not know, as well as some chicken terminology that will be fun for children to read together. I can see where this book will be perfect for any children’s school room or school library’s. I’m giving this book Five Stars!!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

About the Author

Award-winning, Christian author Caryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory. Of her best-selling novels, readers love her historical Christian romance family sagas most, but also enjoy their contemporary cousins, Caryl’s Biblical fiction, her new historical mystery series, and tales for young adults and mid-grade booklovers as well as the new picture books for the still younger set. The majority of reviewers award her stories five-stars and praise Caryl’s writing style and the depth of her characters, feeling as though they get to know them well.

The prolific writer loves singing the new songs God gives her almost as much as penning new novels—hear a few at YouTube! She’s been married to Ron fifty-five years, and they share four children and twenty-seven grandsugars. The McAdoos live at The Peaceable in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas, waiting expectantly for God to open the next door.

More from Caryl

As the chicken population grows at The Peaceable Farm & Bookery, troubles come–all based all on the true story! One of our beautiful ‘Golden Laced Wyandotte’ hens got broody and wanted to sit on a nest and hatch a clutch of chicks!

The wee peepers, designated the “Songsters” and named Reba, Celine, Loretta, and Miley (the last by a reader’s daughter), experience the famous and proverbial “pecking order” chickens are so famous for. In human terms that can be called bullying though, and so Goldie, their mother teaches the girls how to respond those bully chickens!

Grami loves her “backyard birds”, and so does O’Pa! She expects the name of the twenty acres she and O’Pa live on in Red River County—The Peaceable—to be the spur for all its inhabitants to cohabitate peacefully with one another—and that includes the chickens!

She and O’Pa, her husband of fifty-five years have bought an incubator to hatch purebred chicks then raise fine, healthy birds to their laying age—usually four to five months—before finding them forever homes. We love our flock, and the babies grow so fast. Watching them is so much fun and relaxing, too!

Grami knows each hen and rooster by name, and they all are so affectionate! They come running whenever I head out the door (mostly because they want to see if I brought any food! 😊) I love thinking about what they are saying to each other with all their clucking and purring and cackling!

This is why the books are partially written from the hens’ point of view as our first animals’ series, The River Bottom Ranch Stories featuring horses and goats and dogs among other wild animal characters. And all those farm animals were real ones that we owned and loved, too—like the chickens!

This series ‘Grami’s Stories for Children’ also has a narrator speaking throughout—that’s me, Grami McAdoo! I talk to the children through a few pages full of dialogue to teach them about poultry and things of God. In NEW CHICKS at the Peaceable, I talk about bullies and how Jesus teaches us to respond, how they can be scary, but God is always with us and sends His angels to protect us!

The illustrations are photographs of our real chickens and The Peaceable Farm & Bookery. In the back of the book, there are a few pages of “Chicken Terminology” and fun “Chicken Facts” to teach the little ones more about the wonderful world of chickens!

I pray the precious little ones so dear to God’s heart will love the story and be blessed by it! 😊

Aivan: The One Truth by Kayla E. Green

About the Book

Book: Aivan: The One Truth

Author: Kayla E. Green

Genre: Young Adult Christian Fantasy

Release Date: July 23, 2022

Two young people from opposite sides of the Great Continent must make sense of their life.

Rune has grown up all of her life in the mountainous northern nation of Kansanai. As granddaughter of the Senior Elder, she has been a devout believer of the Vihishki gods her whole life. Yet, when a prophet challenges the Vihishki gods against his Aivan, the One Truth, everything she thought she knew is turned upside down. Will she be able to let go of the life she thought she deserved for something far greater than what she could have ever imagined?

Rolf goes through the motions of everyday life in the southern nation of Etalentin. Yet, his routine is disrupted when a voice claiming to be the one true God speaks to him. Listening to his heart, he follows Aivan, but he is thrown temptation after temptation on his journey. Will Rolf be able to resist the temptations in order to fulfill Aivan’s plan for him?

Aivan: The One Truth is a story about self-discovery, identity, and faith.

And now a FUN question and answer time with the author.

  1. Where is your favorite setting for a story you have written? I have written several flash fiction stories with Havok. During their World Tour season, I wrote one piece, “The End of the World?” It featured original characters based loosely on Aztec mythology. The setting was the heavens above Tenochtitlan (ancient Mesoamerica)—Huey, the main character, kicks things off by stealing a golden acorn and then continued antics lead to some dire consequences. It was really fun to mix elements from ancient historical codices and my own ideas in this piece (including the setting)!

2. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story? My characters are in control, 100%. LOL! They most definitely take over so I rarely spend time on an outline; they’re going to toss it and change everything anyway.

3. If a film were made of your book, who would you cast in the leading roles? I absolutely love this question! Michael Cimino would be the perfect choice to play Rolf in the movie version of Aivan: The One Truth. And I think Elle Fanning would make an excellent Rune!

4. Five things most people don’t know about you. Things most people don’t know? Hmmmm….

  1. When I was five, I, while watching the movie Tarzan, decided to try to swing from my bed to my sister’s bed using a ceiling fan chain…the little chain was most certainly not a vine in the jungle and it instantly snapped. I broke my elbow and had to wear a sling for what seemed like ages—it was only like 8 weeks.
  2. I didn’t always wear glasses. I didn’t realize how bad my eyesight was, but my mom realized something was up when I was struggling to see the projector screen at church. I did so poorly on my eye test that the nurse asked me if I knew my ABCs…at ten years old, I most certainly knew my alphabet—I just couldn’t see. LOL! (The ‘lols’ sprinkled in are showing my age, aren’t they?) Walking into the grocery store after getting my glasses revealed a whole new world; I didn’t realize each aisle had signs listing what items were there!
  3. I collect sugar skulls and figurines called Furry Bones. They are little ceramic skeletons dressed in different costumes. They’re fun and cute!
  4. I studied religion abroad in India as an undergraduate student—one of the best experiences of my life.
  5. I had to stop eating beef after I saw a video of a cow and thought “big grass dog.” The idea of eating a burger after that was unsettling. Similarly, years before, I stopped eating pork because of an episode of Boy Meets World where Shawn gets a pig and names it “Little Corey.” My husband still eats beef and pork, and it doesn’t bother me that he, or other people, do—it’s just not for me

5. Tell us a little about your plans for the future. Where do you see yourself as a writer in five years?  I will be releasing a young adult fantasy duology, The Tritonia Chronicles, with Ambassador International in the near future. I also have plans to publish a multi-book series that takes place starting 16 years after Aivan: The One Truth and continues to follow different generations. I have plans for a YA arthurian-inspired fantasy standalone novel, a MG novel, and a picture book. Lots of ideas! My biggest goal is to continue to make time to write stories and to ensure those stories stay kingdom-focused. It would be really amazing to be on the New York Times Bestseller List one day. And having David Tennant narrate an audiobook would be a dream come true!

    About the Author

Kayla E. Green is a school librarian, speculative fiction author, and poet who adores her husband and their furbabies. When she isn’t writing, reading, or taking photos for her bookstagram, she loves singing loudly and off-key to KLove Radio, napping, and pretending she’s a unicorn. Her award-winning YA fantasy novella, Aivan: The One Truth, and her inspirational poetry collection, Metamorphosis, are now available through book retailers. Kayla also has stories and poems featured in various anthologies, contest-winning stories published with Clean Fiction Magazine, and several flash fiction stories available online through Havok Publishing.

    More from Kayla

Working in education, it often is disheartening to see how much darkness bombards today’s youth. With Aivan: The One Truth, the forthcoming Chronicles of the One Truth series, and all my writing, my primary goal is to offer young readers a beacon of hope in this dark world. Alluding to many stories and lessons found in the Old Testament, Aivan is a fast-paced novella designed to capture young readers and pull them into the world of the Great Continent. It is my biggest prayer with this book that Rune and Rolf’s journey in this fantasy narrative will serve as a guiding light to lead readers of all ages to seek truth in our reality—the truth that can only be found through our one true God.

One of my current projects is developing a companion devotional for Aivan: The One Truth as well as the full-length novels that will be part of the complete Chronicles of the One Truth series (which will be released at a later date). The devotional would be a tool for parents, teachers, and pastors to use along with the book to help young readers understand the themes and biblical parallels.

Two major themes within the novella center around identity and purpose. Rune’s struggles with disappointment with shattered dreams and the heartache of feeling lost, alone, and unfulfilled are struggles that are arguably universal. In looking at Rune’s journey, young readers as well as adult readers can recognize the real-world challenges of identity: Who exactly are we? In today’s world, there is a constant battle between God and society. How can one embrace their identity as a child of God when the world demands us to rage and rebel against that title?

In Exodus 3:11 (NIV) Moses asks God, “Who am I?” after he is told to go to the Pharaoh to rescue the Israelites. God tells Moses, “I am with you,” (Exodus 3:12, NIV). Similar to Moses’ walk of faith, Rune, like us all, must learn to accept the truth. Like Aivan in the fantasy novella, our God, the one true God, is always with us. We may not immediately—or ever—understand His plan; however, through Him we are whole, redeemed, and loved. And in that, we have great purpose.

I pray that whoever reads Aivan: The One Truth finds parallels to our own world and finds solace knowing that we are because God is the great “I Am.”

In my upcoming companion devotional, I will explore the concepts of identity and purpose from a biblical perspective. Anyone who wants updates on this, should follow my blog and subscribe to my newsletter to be the first to know!

As Freddie and Grace are pulled deeper into the mystery and their beloved Detective Jack disappears, can they use their wits and work as a team to find the thieves and Jack before it’s too late.

The Juliet Code is a Freddie and Grace Mystery, sequel to The Mistletoe Countess and The Cairo Curse.

    The Ever After

    I’ve always loved fairytales.

    Especially the romanticized version (#romancewriter).

The wonderful sense of a two people meeting, overcoming obstacles to be together, and then the happily-ever-after?

Well, those are some of my favorite reasons to read and write fiction. However, I didn’t realize the challenge I took on when I agreed to write a second and third book with the main characters staying the same!

    You know what I mean?

In most series, the main characters from book one become secondary characters in the consecutive books so that the secondary characters in book one can become the main characters in book 2 (everybody still following along? 🙂)

One of my favorite book series that do this so well is the Amelia Peabody series. I fell in LOVE with Amelia and Emerson in book one, but just loved watching their continued dynamic as a couple grow with each new book. I felt as if I got to know them so much better in their “ever after” while they engaged in all sorts of adventures together.

So…that’s what I hoped to accomplish with Freddie and Grace.

Where The Mistletoe Countess ends with a happily-ever-after, The Cairo Curse and The Juliet Code take over to show us more of the…ever after – my attempt at showing how two main characters continue to grow beyond the end of book one.

I didn’t realize what a daunting feat it would be. Watching two characters meet, fall in love, and show some growth in book 1 was what I was used to doing. But how was I supposed to continue that character growth in consecutive books?

Well, I had to grow myself as a writer to understand how small changes can make lasting differences especially when writing about a beloved couple.

I think The Juliet Code shows a little of that growth – of our Freddie and Grace have not only matured spiritually and, in Grace’s case, experientially, but also as a couple.

Do you have a series that you love where the main characters stay the same?
