demolished legacy step eager age turn scam rich chest shaking smell lie

***********

Sam watched as his house was demolished and immediately thought of a scam since he had received a certified letter telling him that he was now rich due to winning a contest he supposedly entered. He thought the letter was a lie and he didn’t answer it. He wanted more information. He was eager to see if it was real or not.

Sam was of an age where he didn’t believe everything he saw. That was a legacy from his father, who had been a very dignified lawyer. Sam watched his house being demolished and was unable to do anything about it. He turned and looked for his father, who was supposed to show up with the paperwork, and whether he was legally about to become rich and rebuild a much bigger house, or live in shame of being scammed and homeless.

Technically he hadn’t been asked if he wanted his house demolished  and a new one built. He was afraid that he smelled a lie. His heart started pounding in his chest and he was shaking as he stepped closer to his father when he saw him enter the yard. His chest was beating as he waited for the words from his father.

“Son, you aren’t going to believe this, but it is true and your grandfather gave the ok to tear down that old house and to build something more befitting a man of your financial status. You are lucky!”

voices time story debris present travel lead doors roots prophecy last mirror

***************

Victoria just had time to look in the mirror one last time. She heard voices and glanced in the mirror. What she saw was not herself. She saw a woman dressed in old-fashioned clothes, standing in front of a set of doors that opened inward. The scene reminded her of the past, rather than the present. It stirred memories of the old house she once inhabited.

There was debris all over the floor. She thought of the prophecy and the roots of the story of this old house. As she watched, the woman took the hand of her child and began to lead her out of the room and into the hall where their suitcases and satchels waited to be picked up and head out on their travel plans. The woman must have been Victoria’s mother, and the little girl was her as a child. She was feeling awkward, not seeing a picture of herself as she is now, and seeing the past. She picked up the book and looked at the pictures. They were indeed her and her mother when she was a child. She wondered if she was seeing the past or a make-believe scene.

Victoria’s discomfort with the mirror’s revelations grew, compelling her to leave the room. The possibility of the figures being ghosts or the duration of the mirage’s existence if she remained stationary troubled her. Why was she being shown these glimpses of the past? She made a beeline for the door, her handbag in tow. She glanced back just in time to see the door close in the mirror.

enchantment latch apples chatter crave catalyst catastrophe wings gift sing miss limit

Laurie begged me to read her favorite enchantment book. She unlatched the cupboard where I kept her books, and I waited for her to bring them. She grabbed an apple from the bowl in the kitchen and settled down with me to wait for me to sing her favorite song first. I was surprised that she didn’t crave cookies and cakes as a young child. She was quite content with her apples although I had to limit the amount she ate because they can be too much of a good thing for the digestive system. The apples could be a catalyst for an upset tummy, and Laurie was miserable then.

I started to sing her favorite song and was happy I had the gift of being able to sing. She loved hearing me sing. We didn’t miss this routine hardly at all. Almost every night, we sang aloud, well, me singing and her clapping.

Laurie put her Tinker Bell costume on and flapped her wings as we read about the catastrophe that happened to her favorite fairy and how she came out of it. We always chatted about what happened in the end.

MLMM Monday Wordle #395

Your words today are:
post, see, ring, leave, sadness, point, hollow, shallow, bark, share, two, bottle.

Di’s guidelines:

**********

Miriam loaded a hollow point bullet into her gun and laid it on the shallow bark table she had especially made for her, with the hole she made from shooting a perfect target. The bullet is still in there.

Mark is coming over tonight, and she had hoped he would propose to her. However, she found the mail from the post office today, and it had a letter from her best friend Marcy. Marcy spills the beans about Mark and Suzanne getting together and that he had proposed to her.

Her phone rang and she could see that the call was from Mark and she refused to answer it. She felt the sadness of being jilted although he didn’t know she knew already. She had put a bottle of wine and two glasses on the table for them to share after what she had hoped would be a proposal. She would leave the bottle there for him to wonder what was happening.

Mark walked in and walked over to her to kiss her. She raised the gun and shot him in the chest. She had thought it was his chest, but he noticed the gun rising and jerked to the side, and she only hit him on his right side.

“Miriam, what have you done?” he gasped out. “Why did you shoot me?”

“You have the nerve to ask me that after I get a note from Marcy about you and Suzanne?”

“What about us? I took her with me to the jewelry store to help me pick out the perfect engagement ring for you and now you shoot me?”

“Wait, Marcy said you and Suzanne were getting married. She saw you she said.”

“I took Suzanne with me to help me pick out YOUR ring. Not HERS! How could this get so messed up?”

“Oh, Mark, I am so sorry and hope you can forgive me sometime. I honestly didn’t know. Marcy sounded so sure of herself.”

Call me an ambulance, although I am sure I will be alright since I saw the gun coming up and jumped to the side. You are a perfect shot so I am surprised that you missed me.

“I didn’t want to kill you, just startle you. I wanted to believe it was all a mistake. Can you ever forgive me?”

“I will try to, but don’t try that again.”

“Nope, never, I am so sorry!”

Penny hired a cook many years ago. Miriam loved to bake cakes, so Penny had cake for dessert daily.

Today was Penny’s birthday, so Miriam made a pot roast for dinner. She had company coming over to help her celebrate, so she was in a good mood. Plus, she had asked Miriam to make her a pie. Her favorite was apple pie a la mode.

The kitchen was hot from all the food that was baking and roasting in the oven, so Miriam was in a pair of shorts to be comfortable. She would change back into her uniform before she served dinner.

When the doorbell rang, Penny quickly answered, anxious to see her friends again. It had been a while since they had visited. Penny couldn’t go out often because she was in a wheelchair and found getting around awkward. They hugged and headed to the living room for a glass of wine before dinner.

quivers limbs scattered yellow twirl hearts streak faint bags three howls long

Prompt by Brenda Warren

**********

My limbs quivered as I listened to the three long howls of the wolves in my yard. The wolves seemed scattered among the trees. Every night, I hear their howls, faint at first and then louder as they draw closer to my house.

My heart pounds as they draw closer every night. I wonder if they will approach my door, forcing me to remain inside. I am afraid to put the dog outside alone so he can do his business before bed.

I practice my dance routine, twirling my yellow skirt around and around. The music ends, and I sit down on the couch, resting.

I saw a wolf streak past my patio window. This is the closest one has ever gotten. I cannot put the dog out with them right outside the door. It’s a good thing I had trained Max to use the puppy pads for times when he couldn’t go outside.I put out a few extra pads and realized the bag was empty. I headed to the closet to find the extra bags I had purchased the last time I was at the store. I would need to keep them handy and purchase more the next time I was there for groceries.

Your words are:
hung, misunderstood, embarrassed, flush, laughter, restaurant, boss, expensive, safe. extra, game, bonus

Prompt Rules

**********

Rachel was embarrassed, her cheeks flushed. Had she misunderstood her boss? The laughter was unbearable, and she was close to tears. She looked around the restaurant and saw that everyone was still laughing. What had she done or said to deserve this?

“Quiet everyone, Rachel, please come into the office with me,” her boss told her.

“What is going on, Harry?”

“Rachel, I’m sorry about that, but it was funny. You came out of the restroom with toilet paper hanging out of the waistband of your uniform skirt.

“Oh no,” she moaned and covered her face. She looked down and didn’t notice anything. “Where is it?”

“It fell out as you walked across the floor.

Thankfully, it was almost time for her shift to end. She would finish handing out the bills to her customers and then head home to try and forget what had happened to her that day.

Walking into her house after work, she checked to see if any mail or packages had come for her. She was expecting an expensive new dress for her parents’ 50th Anniversary party.

Nothing was on the dining room table, where her neighbor Julie always left her mail and packages. She always brought them in so they would be safe from any would-be thieves or neighborhood kids.

She was going to order a pizza for dinner, so she would occupy herself with a computer game on her phone while she waited for it. She was doing well with the game, and she won extra games and a bonus of 100,000 points.

She continued to play while she waited for her pizza to arrive. When the doorbell rang, it was her neighbor, Julie. She had a package in her hand and handed it to Rachel. “This came for you earlier today, but I didn’t get a chance to drop it off for you. I gather this is the dress you have been waiting for. Can I see it? It sounded so lovely when you described it.”

“Sure, you can. In fact, let me try it on, and you can tell me if it looks alright on me.” She headed to her bedroom with the box.

“Oh, Rachel, it is lovely. It is perfect for the party.”

Rachel beamed at Julie. She was so happy the dress fit and looked so good on her. She wasn’t sure when she ordered it from the catalog. You never know when you order something online like that. Most clothing doesn’t fit her. Now, she just had to find a pair of heels to go with it. Those she would have to buy in person. She never bought shoes online.

breath cruel escape river away sorrow kitchen licked dust whispering spin gown

Prompt by Brenda Warren

**********

Bonnie heard whispering in the kitchen and held her breath as she went down the stairs to show her parents the gown she had bought for the prom. She had gone with her friends to buy it, so they had no idea what it looked like. She hoped they wouldn’t be cruel when they saw it. Sometimes, their comments are not so nice when it comes to how she dresses. They didn’t seem to notice the sorrow their words caused her.

Entering the kitchen, she saw her Dad pause as he licked the beaters from the cake batter for the cake Mom was making for dinner.

At first, no one said a word, but then Mom told her to spin around so she could see the back. “You know, you look hideous in that gown. You should have let me take you shopping. You can’t be trusted to dress well. All you ever wear is black. The bottom of your gown is dusty, Bonnie. Where have you been walking?”“Just down the stairs to the kitchen. You know you never clean the stairs, so I probably picked it up as I walked down here.” Bonnie turned away to escape back to her room. She was hurt that they would question her choice of gown. She and her friends had thought it was perfect for her. So what if it was black? She looked good in black. She cried a river of tears as they continued to put her down for the dress she had picked. Life wasn’t fair, she thought, not for the first time.

MLMM Monday Wordle #388

Your words are:
bruise, secret, sinister, creep, blind, hidden, spoken, wishful, pretend, trapped, caught, untrue

Prompt Rules

**********

Cassandra looked at the bruise on her arm, alarmed because her mother would demand to know where she got it. Peter had hit her the other day, and her mother hadn’t noticed the bruise yet. She knew it was wishful thinking that she could hide it from her mother, as it was summertime and too hot to wear long sleeves. She wouldn’t be able to keep it hidden, as her mother was not blind but very vigilant.

Cassandra had kept Peter’s abuse a secret from her mother, but her mother probably wouldn’t believe it anyhow since Peter did not come across as a creep. Cassandra pretended it didn’t happen.

She didn’t know how to make Peter stop hitting her. She felt trapped in this relationship and had spoken to Peter about it. He always apologized but would do it again the next time she made him mad.

She told him what he was doing was considered abuse, and he said that was untrue. He would never abuse her. He didn’t see it that way.

Her mother caught her one day when she walked into her room without knocking. “Where did that bruise come from?” her mother demanded.

“I hate to say this, but Peter has been hitting me lately. I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“How long has he been hitting you? You should have told me. I had noticed a few bruises before and was afraid it was something like this, but I didn’t want to believe he was hitting you. I didn’t think it was something this sinister. I thought you had become more clumsy since you said nothing about it. You need to stand up for yourself and break it off with him. He has no right to be hitting you. No woman deserves to be abused.”

“Oh, Mom, I am afraid of him and afraid to tell him because he would probably hit me again.”

“Call him up and tell him to come over here, and we will tell him together, and we will also tell him that if he hits you one more time, we are calling the police and filing a complaint against him. There is no way I am going to allow this to continue. You are a minor, and I am responsible for keeping you safe. You have to promise me that you will not see him if he ever lays hands on you again. Do you understand me?”

“Yes, Mom, I would be happy if you could get him to stop hitting me. I don’t know why he started to hit me anyhow. He wouldn’t admit to abusing me when I tried to tell him.”

“He will stop now, or he will be going to court. I won’t put up with it.”

back flash vanishing tap top trip yearning blind sigh vine strong fear

**********

Larry had a flashback to the day he lost his eyesight and became legally blind. He sighed as his thoughts returned to that day. He had been on a business trip and suddenly lost his vision.

His doctor had warned him that he had diabetic retinopathy and that it could cause a sudden loss of vision. It had simply vanished one day. He had feared this day, and it had finally happened.

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time. He had flown from his home state of Virginia to Florida for a business trip. He had to go to the hospital in Florida for a diagnosis and to see if anything could be done about it. His wife, Jean, had to fly down to be with him and to help him get back home.

When he got back home, he followed up with his Endocrinologist. He had to learn to be strong and trust the doctor to help him in any way possible. He was taught how to walk with a cane using a tapping motion. One day, he tripped over a vine that had grown across the sidewalk out in front of his home. He yearned for his eyesight to return, but the doctor said that wouldn’t happen.Since he had lost his eyesight, the ability to read was at the top of his list of things he missed the most. He loved to read, and reading was necessary for his job. He had to go on disability and give up the job he loved. Larry cursed his family’s genetics for being the main cause of his developing diabetes. He felt his life was over and went into therapy to help him cope with his loss of vision.
