Mary was feeling upset about what she considered her pathetic living situation. She had become so feeble lately that she could barely get around her house without having to sit down in each room. She was so weak, and she had to catch her breath constantly. The oxygen she wore didn’t seem to be helping her much. She hated that the oxygen had become an essential part of her life. She couldn’t live without her oxygen tube firmly in place. When she left her house, she had to take a portable oxygen tank with her. Her family hated to have to take her to her doctor’s appointments because not only was she so weak that she needed help to walk, but she also needed help with her portable oxygen tank. The last thing she needed was for the oxygen to blow up and take her and her family members with it.

The phone rang, startling her. She had an appointment today and was waiting for Luke, her grandson, to pick her up. She hoped it wasn’t him canceling her ride. That would be all she needed right now since this appointment was for her pain management, and she couldn’t miss it, or she wouldn’t get her pain medication for the month. “Hello,” she said, sitting with the phone so she wouldn’t get out of breath.

“Hello Grandma,” it was Sean one of her other grandchildren. He was in the Marine Corps and he called her every now and then. “Guess what?” he sounded excited. “Oh I can’t wait for you to guess. I just got promoted to the next rank. I am a corporal now.”

“Oh, Sean, that’s wonderful news. Congratulations on the promotion. You always work so hard. I am proud of you!”

“Thanks, Grandma, I have to get going now. It is almost time for a run. I also am the number one runner in my platoon.”

“That’s wonderful, Sean. Keep up the good work and have a nice day. I love you!” She hung up with a smile on her face. She was so proud of him.

Now, Luke was another story. Just then, she heard a loud bang. That had to be Luke’s car. He must be here already, she thought. She knew his car had begun to backfire, and he couldn’t afford to fix it. As always, he would probably ask her to lend him money to fix his car. She didn’t have it, so she was lucky he still came to pick her up for her appointments. She did give him gas money, though. That was all she could afford to give him. He needed another job, although he might not be available to give her rides anymore if he did that. It’s kind of a hopeless situation either way.

Luke didn’t come in, so she looked out the window. He wasn’t here yet. Then she remembered the season they were in and that the 4th of July was tomorrow, so it could have been fireworks being set off that she heard. They always set them off a few days before and after the holiday. She turned away from the window and went to get her purse as he should be here soon.

The door opened, and Luke said, “Let’s go, Grandma. I have a job interview after I take you to the doctor’s. It pays more than this one but is the same hours, so I can still take you to your appointments. Maybe I will be able to get this car fixed soon.”

“That’s wonderful, Luke. I hope you get it. I am so proud of you.” He helped her to the car and settled her in.

Icicle – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules for the Word of the Day Challenge:

Today’s word of the day is ICICLE.

********************

As the day wore on and the sun shone on the gutters, the icicles got longer and longer in length. Aggie was afraid that their weight would pull the gutters off the roof. She tried to pull down the ones hanging over her doorway because she feared their weight would pull them down and hurt someone. She got out her hairdryer and extension cord and aimed the heat on the icicles so they would melt and come off before someone did get hurt. It happened to her neighbor last year, and the person who was hit by the icicle sued her for reckless endangerment. That was the last thing she needed.

Secrecy – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules for the Word of the Day Challenge:

Today’s word of the day is SECRECY.

********************

Carol promised her friend not to say anything to her husband. She told him everything, which bothered her, but Suzie had asked her for secrecy when Carol found out about Suzie’s affair. Carol begged Suzie to tell her husband she was unhappy and wanted a divorce. And if she didn’t want a divorce, she should ask him to go to counseling for whatever made her seek out the affections of another man. She didn’t know how much longer she could keep this secret from her husband, who just happened to be Suzie’s husband’s best friend.

Impact – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules for the Word of the Day Challenge:

Today’s word of the day is IMPACT.

********************

My dad knew the impact was inevitable. He braced himself, but his passenger had no time to brace himself. When the car rear-ended them and sent them into the intersection, they were hit by the traffic entering the intersection, unaware of the impending collision. They had been in a stopped position, but the impact was strong enough to push them into the intersection, and it was out of my dad’s hands.

My dad’s friend’s leg was stuck in the center of the front floor where the console was. He couldn’t get out. My dad got out and saw the flames licking up the back of the car towards the gas tank. He didn’t have much time, but he put his life on the line to help get his friend out. He pulled him free and out of the car just before the explosion.

He risked his life for his friend’s life with no time to think about it. My mom was so glad that we kids had not been in the back seat as there was no backseat left. The impact pushed the trunk into the back seat. We wouldn’t have made it out of there alive. Plus, my dad would have had to decide who to save because he couldn’t have saved four people before the explosion. Luckily there was only one other person involved, and they both made it out safely.

Seek – Your Daily Word Prompt

Rules for One Daily Prompt:

Your word for the day is SEEK!

********************

The children decided to play a game of hide and seek. Three-year-old Bethie didn’t understand how to play, so she simply stood in plain sight in the middle of the yard. The older kids pretended not to see her and kept asking where is Bethie hiding, and she was clapping her hands and yelling, “Here I am, can’t you see me?” Everyone had a great time.

Homeless – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules for the Word of the Day Challenge:

Today’s word of the day is HOMELESS.

********************

The homeless man sat along the side of the road and begged for money for food, he claimed. One smart woman said I won’t give you cash, but I will go to the restaurant and buy you some food.

Oh no, ma’am, I don’t like that restaurant, please just give me money for some food. She disagreed. She said you will only get food if I buy it for you. I do not trust you to use the money for food. If you were really hungry, you would take a meal from there, and no questions or objections would be raised.

He looked uncomfortable and then got up and moved on. He wanted the money for alcohol, and she wasn’t falling for it, and everyone around them heard it too.

Rules for the Word of the Day Challenge:

Today’s word of the day is MEMORIAL.

We held a memorial service for my dad and since he was a veteran they had a flag line leading up to the entrance and they did the flag folding service for him. Since it was all inside there were no gun salutes, but the service was nice anyway.

Today’s Word of the day is Obstinacy.

NO!

By Tessa Dean October 2022

The child showed his obstinacy and stomped his foot while yelling, “NO!”

“I will not put up with this,” his mother said and reached out for him to pull him over to her.

“NO!” he screamed louder and stomped his foot again.

“Do you want to stand in time out, Stanley?” his mother asked the obstinate child.

“NO!” he said but didn’t yell this time. He started to move over to his mother, and she caught him and quietly explained what she wanted him to do and that she wanted him to do it now.

Stanley slowly picked up his toys, put them away, and then started to get ready for bed.

Battery – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules:

Today’s Word of the day is Battery.

********************

The Dare

By Tessa Dean October 2022

They had been dared by their school friends to enter the haunted house. Tommy and Stan were unsure of this, but they didn’t want their friends to think they were scared. Tommy turned on the flashlight, and Stan opened the door. Just as they crossed the threshold, the flashlight went out, and the door slammed. They froze in horror. “Do you have extra batteries for this flashlight, Stan?” Tommy asked him.

“No, I don’t carry batteries around,” Stan said.

“But you knew we were coming here, so why didn’t you bring extra?”

Just then, spooky sounds were heard. Both boys turned to run to the closed door. When they finally got it open, their friends were all outside laughing except for the lucky boy who got to turn on the tape player. He wasn’t laughing, though. He came charging out of the house right behind Tommy and Stan. He was babbling something about ghostly sounds, but not from the tape recorder he had taken in.

All the kids turned and ran except for the older kids who had set up the house to scare the younger kids. They sat upstairs in one of the rooms and drank their beer, laughing at the kids who had run in fear. They turned off the tape recorder and that’s when they heard the ghostly sounds and made to run themselves, but the door was locked and they couldn’t unlock it. One of the boys broke a window, and they all climbed out and ran too.

Bash – Word of the Day Challenge

Rules:

Today’s Word of the day is Bash.

********************

“Get your hands off of my candy, you brat!” Ryan pushed his little brother away from his bucket of candy.

“Mom, Stevie won’t let me have a piece of candy.” Ryan wailed, creeping closer to Stevie’s candy again.

“I am going to bash you over the head if you touch my candy,” Stevie shouted to Ryan, making him cry harder.

“Boys, enough of the fighting over the candy, or neither of you will have any. There is more than enough candy for the two of you.” Mom glared at both boys.
