Mary was feeling upset about what she considered her pathetic living situation. She had become so feeble lately that she could barely get around her house without having to sit down in each room. She was so weak, and she had to catch her breath constantly. The oxygen she wore didn’t seem to be helping her much. She hated that the oxygen had become an essential part of her life. She couldn’t live without her oxygen tube firmly in place. When she left her house, she had to take a portable oxygen tank with her. Her family hated to have to take her to her doctor’s appointments because not only was she so weak that she needed help to walk, but she also needed help with her portable oxygen tank. The last thing she needed was for the oxygen to blow up and take her and her family members with it.
The phone rang, startling her. She had an appointment today and was waiting for Luke, her grandson, to pick her up. She hoped it wasn’t him canceling her ride. That would be all she needed right now since this appointment was for her pain management, and she couldn’t miss it, or she wouldn’t get her pain medication for the month. “Hello,” she said, sitting with the phone so she wouldn’t get out of breath.
“Hello Grandma,” it was Sean one of her other grandchildren. He was in the Marine Corps and he called her every now and then. “Guess what?” he sounded excited. “Oh I can’t wait for you to guess. I just got promoted to the next rank. I am a corporal now.”
“Oh, Sean, that’s wonderful news. Congratulations on the promotion. You always work so hard. I am proud of you!”
“Thanks, Grandma, I have to get going now. It is almost time for a run. I also am the number one runner in my platoon.”
“That’s wonderful, Sean. Keep up the good work and have a nice day. I love you!” She hung up with a smile on her face. She was so proud of him.
Now, Luke was another story. Just then, she heard a loud bang. That had to be Luke’s car. He must be here already, she thought. She knew his car had begun to backfire, and he couldn’t afford to fix it. As always, he would probably ask her to lend him money to fix his car. She didn’t have it, so she was lucky he still came to pick her up for her appointments. She did give him gas money, though. That was all she could afford to give him. He needed another job, although he might not be available to give her rides anymore if he did that. It’s kind of a hopeless situation either way.
Luke didn’t come in, so she looked out the window. He wasn’t here yet. Then she remembered the season they were in and that the 4th of July was tomorrow, so it could have been fireworks being set off that she heard. They always set them off a few days before and after the holiday. She turned away from the window and went to get her purse as he should be here soon.
The door opened, and Luke said, “Let’s go, Grandma. I have a job interview after I take you to the doctor’s. It pays more than this one but is the same hours, so I can still take you to your appointments. Maybe I will be able to get this car fixed soon.”
“That’s wonderful, Luke. I hope you get it. I am so proud of you.” He helped her to the car and settled her in.
