Another fascinating little book by Dr. Hansen. As with autism, one hears about ADHD all the time these days. The truth is a little surprising—only about 5% of people actually suffer from ADHD bad enough that they need to be treated medically, and only 3% of those are the children that should be medicated.
Instead, anywhere medicine is a viable option as in Europe, Scandinavia, and the Americas, for example, you will find more people being diagnosed and medicated for ADHD. In the past 20 years, children diagnosed with ADHD has jumped from 3% to 11%. In America, some states have as high as 20% of children diagnosed with ADHD. One state (not naming any names Mississippi) has diagnosed 30% of its children as ADHD.
Properly managed, and not necessarily with meds (exercise, for example, works wonders), those with ADHD are highly creative, adventurous, curious, and hyperfocused, which can lead to all sorts of new ideas—think Spotify. Also, it is highly likely that ADHD is one of the reasons that caused people to leave Africa and slowly spread around the world, the ADHD pushing people farther and farther, which is why South America has the highest percentage of ADHD.
Finally, never forget that, as with many, many things, ADHD is a spectrum (like sexuality, intro/extroversion/ autism, etc.) and we all fall somewhere on it. Most of us just have a few traits we can attribute to ADHD, and a very few (5%, remember) have to be treated. And Dr. Hansen’s book offers some ways in which to channel those tendencies if medication is not in order.
