Hard on the heels of Saturday morning's full Moon (January 3rd, 2026, at 10:03 UTC) Saturday evening brought a conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter. I know… I'm a sucker for these kinds of thing. A conjunction in astronomical terms is when two planets or a planet and a star or other celestial bodies appear … Continue reading By Jupiter.

Lunatic tendencies.
The first full moon of 2026 sets into the waiting arms of a fir tree. Disc illumination 100%, distance 362,142 km. Me? Standing with the window open trying to get a good shot without a tripod as the icy winds of January flood the bedroom. I was in the garden earlier and the thermometer on … Continue reading Lunatic tendencies.
Noisy guests of summer.
Purist photographers, look away now…I'm posting these snapshots, blurred as they are, as they show something that I haven't seen before.Yesterday evening I was sitting in the garden reading "Guests of Summer" by Theunis Piersma. The book's subtitle is "A House Martin love story" and it is an account of house martins and other "swallow … Continue reading Noisy guests of summer.
Spadger 2!
Further to the post "Spadger!", I've finally managed to get a photograph of the sparrow that visits us. I hope it's not just this lone sparrow but I've only ever seen the one of late so here's hoping that he tells his friends about our bird table and the delicious treats thereon. 🙂
Implicit imperfections.
When I went to bed last night, before I settled in I took a look out of the window, as I always do, and there hanging low in the sky was a lovely crescent moon. I don't know why but I felt compelled to photograph it, the Moon that is, so I fetched a camera … Continue reading Implicit imperfections.

It was November so there was no sun baked tarmac but I'd had one of those moments and it put me in mind of summer. No angst here, nothing unrequited, just the … Continue reading Of one of those timeless moments.
…but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
Well, what do you know? On Saturday 30th March 2025 there was a partial solar eclipse visible from the part of England where I live, and it wasn't (very) cloudy!
Blood moon eclipse thing.
Date: 14th March 2025. Time: 04:50. Temperature: Minus three Celsius. It's the early morning of the fourteenth of March 2025 and this morning there is a partial eclipse of the Moon.
Not everything has to be perfect.
Last Thursday, as I went out to the garden shed for some nefarious purpose or other, I glanced up at the sun as it was trying manfully to make a showing through the myriad clouds, and there off to the left of the nebulous bright glow that gave away the sun's position was a little … Continue reading Not everything has to be perfect.
Quite a pheasant walk.
Many years ago, there used to be a pheasantry in Berkhamsted, although we always referred to it/them in the plural as The Pheasantries. Anyway, Dwight's Pheasantries, reckoned to be the largest in the UK, occupied a tract of land between Ivy House Lane and Bullbeggars Lane on the northeast side of the valley in which … Continue reading Quite a pheasant walk.
