This is an easy read that is enjoyable for an afternoon sitting in the easy chair. There are a couple of Walter Mitty moments where you may daydream “what if” as you are reading along. This isn’t a hard science fiction novel but a good story, suitable for young adults and up and, if there is a sequel, I’d read it. I picked this up during a Kindle promotion vs. its normal price of $3.99, and certainly received more than $3.99 in entertainment value.

Five stars doesn’t justify how much I enjoyed reading Knutsen’s Tom and G.E.R.I.. I was going to "save" this for my vacation ... didn’t happen, I’ve finished it!

I’ve an emerging fan of C.A.Knutsen, and will look forward to future releases eagerly. I felt a real personal connection when reading this book, not something that happens often, especially when reading sci-fi novels. There was great character building and also a little humour to this which blended well. Tom and G.E.R.I.: A SCIENCE-FICTION THRILL is compelling and I was unable to put it down. A definite recommend from me.

‘The thing was obviously not from around here, meaning Earth’

Pacific Northwest author C.A. Knutsen earned his degrees in Electrical Engineering and in Business Administration from the University of Washington and has served in the fields of energy business and science and incorporates his experience in those fields along with the beauty of his surroundings in his science fiction books. His books to date - EMERGENCE, FACTOTUM, ANCIENT AGENDAS, INHERITANCE, THE URRITAN LEGACY, TOM AND G.E.R.I 2.0, AND TOM AND G.E.R.I.

The cover art by Christian Bentulan for this novel truly sets a fine atmosphere to open the story that follows – a ‘forested’ space ship in the mystical light of the woods in Washington discovered by the principle character. Knutsen immediate follows suite with his opening lines – ‘It took me all day to get that car out. Well, it wasn’t a car. That’s just what I thought it might be when I spotted part of it jutting out from decades of forest undergrowth, and moss, inside a mound of blackberry bushes. So the name stuck. I still don’t have a better one….After an hour into the forest I was surprised by an open space appearing before me. It was roughly circular and about thirty feet across. It was covered with ferns. It was obvious that no one had trod the clearing for long time…If there was something there it was probably large. I wanted to find out what it was…’

From this initial encounter, Knutsen’s story unfolds comfortably: ‘Tom Williams had been away from his hometown, Tipton, Washington, for fifteen years. When he had the opportunity to purchase the forest he had always wanted to explore as boy he bought it right away. He returned home expecting to explore the mysteries of the forest, and quickly found that the universe had a way of complicating things.’ G.E.R.I. stands for Galactic Exploration and Research Intelligence.

Discovering the relevance of Tom’s finding – a self-aware Artificial Intelligence that piloted a spaceship to a farm in the nearby woods to Tom’s ‘new’ home - provides a wholly satisfying first-contact science fiction/alien invasion tale that opens windows to the visionary quality of book. Enjoy an escape and a mind-expanding series of thoughts woven by a fine story weaver. Recommended
