"OH MY GOD all the hype, yet I was not prepared for THIS"

"Written in a very nostalgic style, this book recalls the main character's memories in the inter-war period in the 20th century. The story starts quite cheerful, some passages really allow you to feel the innocence of legally becoming an adult and attempting to find your path in life. However, the book gets sadder as it goes. The character's experience hardships, and the relationships that got established in the first part crumble or get different shapes. Themes of religion (particulary Catholitism) and addiction are widely discussed and are the cause behind some turning points in the novel. Male/male attraction and homoerotic friendships are also a part of the themes the book drals with.
It's a very beautiful text overall, full of feelings and with some really attractive descriptive passages. The tragic ending, although devastating to read, is also very fitting.

I have to end my review with a silly note, because it's how I described the book in my head during the week I spent reading it: This is literally and simultaneously Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Grey"'s son and Donna Tartt's "The secret History"'s father.

Anyway, everyone please read this modern classic."
