I really don’t want to start this review by saying that I am genuinely disappointed, but I MUST.
I had been anticipating this book for a while and definitely had the highest of expectations, since the author is one of my favorites. Yet, while reading, I had several moments questioning my sanity because at times it felt as if I was forcing myself to keep going.

The book started really well, but as I read on, something felt off. Honestly, I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was, but I kept going. For me, the writing style felt overdone, with every line desperately trying to be quotable and inspiring, to the point that it no longer came across effortlessly.

The plot itself did not make much sense to me, and there was no chemistry between the characters. One being an 18 years old girl and the other 39 man. Yet neither of them acts their age.

The book follows two timelines: the present day and 25 years ago. In the past, we meet a group of friends: Ali, Joar, Ted, and “the artist” (whose name isn’t even revealed until almost 80% in) spending their last summer together desperately trying to include the artist in an art contest. Each of them struggles in their own way: being misunderstood, abused, or abandoned.

In the present day, we meet Louisa, a girl who is semi-homeless after running away from Forster care. She’s an aspiring artist, painting on walls. By chance, she meets the artist, whose last wish is for her to have the “famous” painting. From there, she and Ted embark on a journey to uncover the story of how it all began. The friendship, the art, the self-discovery, and how they all tie together. As these kids find refuge within themselves, it makes the story both sad and overwhelming. At its core, it focuses on the power of friendship and the impact of art.

Reading other reviews made me feel a bit isolated, since the majority adored this book. I did question myself at first, but this is definitely my personal experience. At the end of the day, not every book by a favorite author will land, and for me, this one just missed the mark.

Quotes I liked:

“Adults always think they can protect children by stopping them from going to dangerous places, but every teenager knows that’s pointless, because the most dangerous place on earth is inside us. Fragile hearts break in palaces and in dark alleys alike.”

"The world is full of miracles, but none greater than how far a young person can be carried by someone else’s belief in them."
