Introducing XR 2025 State of Pay, a first-of-its-kind analysis of advertising production trends and celebrity compensation across the U.S. advertising industry. According to XR, brands spent over $1B featuring celebrities in ads last year alone, with professional athletes seeing the fastest growth. This isn’t a passing trend. As brands increasingly turn to recognizable talent to drive attention and memorability, the economics behind celebrity advertising have massively shifted. The XR State of Pay report analyzed thousands of U.S. commercial productions and talent payments worth $8 billion between 2019 and 2025. It found that total spending on paid guarantees (contractually committed compensation) for celebrities including actors, musicians, athletes, and other high-profile talent in ad productions exceeded $1 billion in 2025, a 47% increase since 2019. Of the celebrities appearing in ads, athletes are the fastest growing talent segment, according to the report. Athlete payments grew 106% to more than $250 million since 2019, and payments to National Football League (NFL) players increased by 145% in the same period. Reflecting the rising popularity of women’s sports, women’s basketball talent drove 176% growth in guaranteed talent payments from 2024 to 2025. https://bit.ly/4jGWI2g
