The J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Olive is one of Michigan’s last coal plants and a major cause of pollution for West Michigan communities. Due to its cost and age, it was scheduled to shut down in May, but the Trump administration issued an order forcing it to stay open. Keeping the coal plant running is costing $615,000 a day and Consumers Energy is now trying to shift those costs onto Michiganders’ energy bills.
