Here’s a late 18th-early 19th century French walnut frame that we restored. All of the areas where there is ripple were missing, but we could see in the remnants of the finish that there was a ripple pattern here. The areas of burl were an educated guess based on the hammer veneering patterns left in the substrate. It could have been a simple cross-grain molding, but we went with burl for the extra drama. These are fun projects and they connect is to the history we are reproducing.
