a) With a neat sketch Beam Engine (Crank & lever mechanism).

b) Define i) Inversion ii) Mechanism ii)degree of freedom iv) Kinematic chain
1 a c) Explain Whithworth quick return mechanism with necessary sketch. 2 CO1 L2
d) With a neat sketch, explain Geneva wheel mechanism. Prove that Peaucillier's mechanism generates an exact straight line.

a) In a reverted epicyclic gear train, the arm A carries two gears B and C and a compound gear D -E. The gear B meshes with gear
E and the gear C meshes with gear D. The number of teeth on gears B, C and D are 75, 30 and 90 respectively. Find the speed and
direction of gear C when gear B is fixed and the arm A makes 100 r.p.m. clockwise.
b) Two shafts A and B are co-axial. A gear C (50 teeth) is rigidly mounted on shaft A. A compound gear D-E gears with C and an

internal gear G. D has 20 teeth and gears with C and E has 35 teeth and gears with an internal gear G. The gear G is fixed and is
concentric with the shaft axis. The compound gear D-E is mounted on a pin which projects from an arm keyed to the shaft B.
Sketch the arrangement and find the number of teeth on internal gear G assuming that all gears have the same module. If the shaft
A rotates at 110 r.p.m., find the speed of shaft B.

a) Derive Fredensteins equation for slider crank mechanism. and function generation for four bar mechanism.
b) Draw the cam profile for following conditions: Follower type = roller follower, off set to the right of cam axis by 18mm; lift =

35mm; base circle radius = 50mm; roller radius = 14mm; out stroke with SHM in 0.05sec; dwell for 0.0125sec; return stroke with
UARM, during 0.125sec; dwell for the remaining period. During return stroke, acceleration is 3/5 times retardation. Determine
max. velocity and acceleration during out stroke and return stroke if the cam rotates at 240 rpm.

A flat faced reciprocating follower has the following motion :(i) The follower moves out for 80° of cam rotation with uniform
acceleration and retardation, the acceleration being twice the retardation.
(ii) The follower dwells for the next 80° of cam rotation.
(iii) It moves in for the next 120° of cam rotation with uniform acceleration and retardation, the retardation being twice the
4 acceleration. 2 CO4 L3
(iv) The follower dwells for the remaining period.
The base circle diameter of the cam is 60 mm and the stroke of the follower is 20 mm. The line of movement of the follower passes
through the cam centre.
Draw the displacement diagram and the profile of the cam very neatly showing all constructional details.

a) Derive Fredensteins equation for slider crank mechanism. and function generation for four bar mechanism.
b)A mechanism, as shown in Fig. has the following dimensions: OA = 200 mm; AB = 1.5 m; BC = 600 mm; CD = 500 mm and BE =
400 mm. Locate all the instantaneous centres. If crank OA rotates uniformly at 120 r.p.m. clockwise, find 1. the velocity of B, C and
D, 2. the angular velocity of the links AB, BC and CD.
