A2Z Challenge – D is for Detroit

I recently reconnected with a neighbor of mine, and discovered that Detroit, Michigan was her hometown, also. My family had left in 1962, while she left more recently. I was pleased to hear that some of the areas in Detroit are built back up. It had taken such a dive after the US auto industry crashed and burned. The riots and what became known as Devil’s Night (Halloween — in which roving gangs ran through Detroit, burning houses and other buildings down.) added immensely to Detroit’s fall into ruin.

This picture was gifted to me by a brave soul who traversed into my old neighborhood in 2010 as a favor to me. Our house had been declared a historical landmark a few years after we moved. The people who lived in it in 2010 did their best to keep up the house. I have many fond memories living in Detroit, as a child. This old house had some of the best places to hide from my brother or to hide away to read a book.

One of my fondest memories were of all the times we went boating on the Detroit River and spent time on Belle Island.

Even though I have many fond memories of growing up in Detroit, Michigan, I know that I would not want to move back there, or even go back to visit my old neighborhoods. The changes are far too drastic and I would be heartbroken to see my old haunting grounds in such disarray.

A2Z Challenge – B is for Being a Book Dragon

I have been called a Bookworm, among many other less appealing labels, throughout my life. As soon as I learned to read, at a very young age, I would be found with a book in my hand. I read everywhere. I read at parks. I read at beaches. Many times I would be hidden in some corner at a party, reading a book.

Today, I think it would be more appropriate to be called a Book Dragon. You see, I hoard books. I’ve been hoarding books for most my adult life. As soon as I moved into my first place, I began filling bookshelves and piling books wherever there was a blank spot on a table or floor. Mind you, I do make sure that no piles are placed where people could trip over them. I may be a Dragon, hoarding my treasure, but I am an organized Dragon.

Sometimes, I think I might want to cull some of my books. I am an elder, after all. I don’t think I have that many more years left in me. I imagine what it would be like for my son to have to figure out what to do with my collections. Then, I look at my burdening bookshelves, and I feel a comfort seeing the books. They bring me joy. Envisioning those shelves being less filled hurts my heart.

I do set aside a pile of books that are designated to be read and passed on to others that may love them. Sometimes, I get through that pile quickly. Other times, the pile languishes as I read books from the library or that others have leant me. Also, I don’t read quite as fast as I did when I was younger. These older eyes have slowed me down and my appetite for reading isn’t as voracious as it used to be.

This is the top 3/5ths of one of my 3 bookshelves that are in the living room.

The rules are simple:
1. Post the last photo on your SD card or last photo on your phone for the 31st or whenever your last photo was taken.
2. No editing – who cares if it is out of focus, not framed as you would like or the subject matter didn’t cooperate.
3. You don’t have to have any explanations, just the photo will do
4. Create a Pingback to this post or link in the comments
5. Use the tags The Last Photo and #LastOnTheCard

I enjoy taking really inexpensive items and altering them for Cosplay. I bought this helmet from the Dollar Tree.

I altered the helmet for my Tank Girl Cosplay.

This picture is a silhouette of Stormagedden, the Dark Lady of All, age 1-year old, taken in 2022. Many evenings, when I turned on the television, she would jump on my dresser and sit herself in front of screen. Sometimes, she would watch the screen. Most of the time she would just sit like she’s sitting in this picture.

While visiting my cousin’s son in Sacramento, we were taking a stroll and heard a noise coming from behind some shrubbery. We found an ideal spot to see what was roaring and I snapped this pic of a company setting up for a touring dinosaur exhibit in 2021.

Cellpic Sunday – Stormagedden

For Johnbo’s Cellpic Sunday — this picture is from 4 years ago. Stormagedden, the Dark Lady of All, loved to try and get on the kitchen counters. She couldn’t jump that high, so her solution was to use the drawers like a ladder. One day, I was doing the dishes and felt her next to me. Luckily, I had my phone within reach and was able to grab this picture..
