Flashback Friday to Last November

I rarely post anything in November. I searched past posts from other sites, and there was nothing to share. I was usually using all my writing momentum to blast, struggle, and vomit words on a page for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writer’s Month).

Last year, was a different story. I had spent about two and a half weeks, in November, in a nursing facility recovering from major, life-saving surgery. I had very little access to a computer, and even less access to the internet. For a Writer’s Workshop prompt I had written the following.

Writer’s Workshop

In October, I learned that I had stopped breathing while on the operating table. In October, I learned how lucky I am to be alive. In October, I learned what the difference is between physical therapy and occupational therapy.

October was a challenging month. October was full of ups and downs.

I spent seventeen days in a nursing facility in October. I watched more television in those seventeen days, than I watched for most of the year. I had a fairly steady flow of visitors at the SNF during my stay. Those visitors were a balm for those long days in the SNF.

Written for The Sound of One Hand Typing’s Writer’s Workshop.  John Holton gives us six writing prompts to choose from. I chose two prompts for this week: (1) Write a post in exactly 9 sentences. and (2) Tell us about something you learned in October.

Flashback Friday – The World Is Spinning A Little Faster Today…

This post from another site on October 17, 2008, is a continuation of part 1, posted here (on WordPress) on October 16, and part 2 posted earlier today. This is being posted for Fandango’s Flashback Friday.

…and I wish I could get off.

Today I awoke to fairly severe vertigo. A result of a borderline ear infection. It was so bad that I didn’t think I was going to make it out of the shower. I fell into the wall, had to grasp onto anything handy, and go stumbling back to bed.

A friend took me to Urgent Care and the doc verified what I suspected, though the ear infection wasn’t really full-blown, yet. He gave me Nasonex and sent me home for bedrest today. I am going crazy with boredom. If I could actually get up and do things, I’d be much happier. Going up and down the stairs the few times I have, has been a real challenge. (If you’ve seen my steps, you’d truly understand. Maybe I’ll add a pic.)

I’m getting my wall put up, my cupboards put back up and a new sink in today! The noise is the one things keeping me awake, and so worth it! I can’t wait! I have to wait until Monday to get the cupboard under the sink taken care of, the ceiling repainted and kitchen back to be fully functional. Then I can get all my things out of the living room and back in the cupboards where they belong.

Flashback – Who Needs A Satellite to Commune With The World?

This is a follow-up to Friday’s Flashback post. This was written on September 23, 2008, while spending time at Harbin Hot Springs in California.

There are places still in the world, that are not reached by a satellite signal. It feels odd, and very refreshing to be nestled in the hills, and have no cell phone service. I am surrounded by oaks and pines and deer wander through the grounds grazing on the foliage in front of my room. They come so close, you can almost reach out and pet them.

The quail are still chatting with each other, as the sun is setting. I had the original intention of going to the dance tonight. At this moment, I’m not so sure. The quiet is so welcoming and with all the walking around I did earlier, I have had to come to the realization that I am very out of shape. As much as the spirit is willing, I think the body has final say.

The movie at 7pm didn’t really rock my boat. The movie at 9pm may be of interest. We’ll see how I feel when 9pm rolls along. Tomorrow night, there’s a play in the theater that sounds fascinating. A former member of the Steve Miller Band, and some other bloke are doing a satire of some sort.

Mostly, I’m just here to soak, read and write. I think I may wander on back up to the pools in a bit. Then, again, I may just stay in my room and write for awhile. This feels so pleasant, I almost hate to break up a good thing. I have all day tomorrow, after all! 🙂

Flashback Friday – Not reading for a week and other nonsense

The following post for Fandango’s Flashback Friday is from 14 years ago, August 29, 2011, from another site.

Not reading for a week and other nonsense

I am coming to the end of my week of no reading. Let me just say, officially and on the record, that not reading for a whole week is nearly impossible for me. Not only because there are things that I have to take care of by email, which luckily entails very little reading, but because my eye locks onto words like a predator locks on to its prey. I see a group of words together somewhere, anywhere, and my eyes focus and eat those words up. Words feed my mind, my very being.

Words are life. They bring light to the dark, hidden places in my life. They expand my thinking. They guide me through the murky waters of my confusions. They entertain and comfort me. So why would I give them up, even for a week?

I am on a journey. Hopefully a journey away from the frightened and mask-ridden little girl that has enslaved me to a braver, more confident and more creative human being. I am following the steps of one (and supposedly several others) who had taken a similar journey and came out on the other side having reached her destination. In my mind’s eye I can see my destination; and so far the journey has been interesting, and even entertaining at certain waypoints. So, I’m done with this challenge as of tonight and am on to new challenges. The road stretches out before me and I wonder what else I will encounter.

P.S. Looking back on that exercise, I think that was one of the hardest, and least favorite, of the exercises in The Artist’s way.

Flashback Friday – Stonehenge and the Long Road

This Flashback is from August 22, 2009.

I woke up early to say my goodbye to Peter, who was back on schedule for work. I was rather tired and drifted in and out of sleep while on the sofa watching television with him. Once I became more coherent, I finished packing the car and hit the road.

The drive back to Oregon consisted of an hour-long stop at Toutle River Rest Area, where I ate a mid-morning meal and wild released 2 books, a 15-minute break at Memaloosa Rest Area (with lots of info regarding the Oregon Trail) and a stop at Stonehenge and Maryhill Museum.

I reached Stonehenge about 2:00PM, which turned out to not be an excellent time for taking pictures. Too much sun and far too few shadows to play with.

Just a hop up the road is Maryhill Museum, which was a real pleasure. Several very colorful metal sculptures decorated the front lawn. Inside the museum there is a treat for just about any lover of art, from photos by Ansel Adams to Rodin sculptures. They have a wonderful display of chess pieces, an interesting display of “Theatre de la Mode”, one of the best Native American Exhibit’s I’ve ever seen and much, much more. As an interesting note, the Museum had been the mansion of Samuel Hill. The building is beautiful, with an amazing view of the Columbia River.

The drive to Redmond, OR was long and if it hadn’t been for Charles Kuralt and his tales of living on the road, would have seemed a bit unbearable. Coming upon Madras was a very welcoming sight. I passed on stopping at the Crooked River Gorge for the sake of arriving in Redmond before too late.

Flashback- Hotel Dreams

Since I’ll be on the road today, I’ll schedule another flashback to land here. This one is from August 16, 2008 (from another site) and is a follow-up of the saga that happened in 2008. The earlier blogs were posted on August 16, 2025 and August 18, 2025.

. . . . .

Hotel Dreams

I’m currently sitting in a hotel room, my friend is on the bed reading and watching tv. I took a break from home and life, and have spent the afternoon/evening soaking in the room’s jacuzzi, eating dinner at a restaurant I don’t usually eat at, swimming (yes, swimming!) in the hotel’s pool, and warming up in their jacuzzi.

The room is nice and I’ll have to come again to enjoy one of their suites again. I am so tempted to stay another night. If I do, though, I cut even deeper into travel money if I do get to take any kind of vacation this year.

I’m wondering how far I should go with planning a vacation. I really want to go on one, and the need is strong to hit the road and leave Reno behind for awhile.

The Oregon coast is starting to look more and more inviting, as well as some of the California coastline. If I do either, I can probably do by car. If I do Cali, I can rent a car, which would put my mind at ease regarding the mileage my car has.

I am still dreaming of a train ride. What a challenge to my comfort zone to travel without my car, and yet, there is the thrill of riding on a train. Yeah, I’m a train geek. I can’t help it. They have always filled my dreams with awe since I was a little tyke.

Well, tonight I’ll slip back into dreaming in water and drift into a peaceful sleep.

I am on the road today, with a friend. We are heading to one of our favorite camp grounds. So, I am going to repost an oldie from 17 years ago on another site. This is a follow-up from a flashback posted on August 16, 2025.

Aug. 15th, 2008

I gave myself a treat today. I took a “breather” day, aka a “sanity” day. What with the happenings at work, I knew I would need one.

I can’t say I filled the day with wonderful outings to the park, lake, or any other of my favorite places. It hit 102 and any place with air conditioning culled my interest.

I saw Brendan Fraser in The Mummy: Tomb of the Emperor. Jet Li is lots of fun in this. Brendan Fraser seems to have truly found his niche. The new Evie is okay, but she and Brendan do not have the same chemistry as did the original actress. If you decide to go, expect nothing more than lots of action, some good special effects, some of the expected silly lines — you’ll enjoy the movie. There’s not much of a storyline that goes beyond the expected.

After my brief excursion with Brendan Fraser and friends in China, I stopped at Bibo Coffee Co. to chill out with a glass of iced tea. This is my favorite coffee house in Reno to spend time reading, writing and just hanging out. It’s relaxed and has some very decent coffee. I’d like to try and get a OBCZ started there.

Searching the NET for Bibo, I discovered they have opened a 2nd store! I’ll have to go check them out, also. Maybe something to add to my already busy weekend.

P.S. I am scheduling this post to release on Monday, the 18th. Let’s see how it goes.

Flashback – Reality & Double-edged Swords

Filed under: Memories — yvensong @ 10:31 am

I am on vacation, so here’s a little flashback to August 13, 2008 from another site.

Reality and Double-edged Swords

At this moment, I am still reeling from the double edged sword of reality that cut through my life today.

We are short handed at work. Besides the insanity of expecting 4 people to do the work of 5, which is really the work of 6, we have a girl out on maternity leave. In other words, there are now 3 of us doing the work of 6.

Next week, there will be 2 of us doing the work of 6, but that is only a week. Right? Not really. After the one girl goes on vacation, the third member of our over-worked party is leaving for good.

Do we have a replacement? Is the moon made of bleu cheese?

Oh, yeah, that double edged sword… I was planning on taking a vacation in September. Let’s do the math. Six minus four is, uh, two! So there will be two of us left in September.

Do you think there is any hope of a vacation any more

Flashback to 2009 – Day 3 of Trip

I’m mostly reposting this as these memories were posted on another site that I no longer use and would like to have these still available.

I’ve arrived at Gig Harbor.

I drove through my favorite part of Central Oregon on the way, Warm Springs. It’s amazingly green and beautiful, with forests and mesas. I stopped at Government Camp for a brief snack and stretch, then continued on my way to the outskirts of Portland. Some real traffic slowed me down in Sandy and was admittedly very happy to reach the 84.

Once I was a few miles into Washington, the rains came. Sometimes with such force that visibility was knocked down to just a few feet. I stopped at Scatter Creek Rest Area for a free cup of coffee, a cookie and lunch. There was a small patch of blue sky. Is this what Washingtonians refer to as a mostly sunny day?

The drive into Gig Harbor was nice and despite the less-than-detailed directions, I found my way to Pete’s place.

Peter, Phil and I stood out on the back deck, talking and renewing old ties. Here’s the view we had from the back deck:

. . . . .

*Aug. 10, 2025 – Note to add: my question regarding ‘sunny day’ was referring to the weather report on the radio that stated that it was a sunny day, just a few minutes before I stopped at the Scatter Creek Rest Area. I was laughing and shaking my head.

Flashback to 2009

Because it’s late and I’m tired after a full day of binge-watching Doctor Who (2nd Doctor), Thor: Love and Thunder, and playing Apples to Apples with friends, I will copy and paste another flashback from 2009.

I can’t believe I woke Aunt Doral up today. I feel so bad! She says it’s fine, that she wakes up early every day. I still feel bad.

I had brought my alarm clock with me, and had forgotten to turn it off. It sounded at 4:30AM. (Groan) After it stopped, I rolled over to go back to sleep, but couldn’t. I had to get up to go. Unfortunately, one of the dogs got spooked and let out a couple of barks, which woke my Aunt up.

. . . . . . .

After a slow start in the morning, and a look at weather and traffic reports, I had decided to stay in Redmond an extra day. It was nice to have a quiet day.

Aunt Doral and I went to the store, picked up flowers and set them at John’s gravesite. This was the first time I’ve been there since the service. I found it difficult to not break down, but was able to focus on the perfect stone.

It’s not easy to see in the picture, and maybe when I return I’ll go back for a better picture, but the stone has a spattering of stars and a sun/moon carved into it. It is perfect for representing him.

After spending some time there, we went to see Frankie and Theresa’s new hot dog stand they run downtown. Frankie and Breanna were standing court.
