Writer’s Workshop – Seven Sentences

I’m sleepy earlier tonight, than usual, after a long and busy day.

I started my day with a slightly longer than one-hour meeting on Zoom.

I pulled weeds in my side yard.

I cooked veggie fish and mashed potatoes for my lunch.

I played Fallout 4, exploring the Wasteland with a second character.

I made veggie burgers, with Japanese BBQ sauce and cheese, for my roommate and I, for dinner.

Now, I am done for the day.

Written for John’s The Sound of One Hand Typing’s Writer’s Workshop. I chose #2 – Write a post in exactly 7 sentences, since I’m too tired to think of anything creative, tonight.

These past two weeks have been hellish.

I am finding it hard to stay balanced.

Death, brain cancer, liver cancer.

Why is it happening all at once?

Little things like Fandango’s short stories, going thrifting, reading, and playing Fallout 4 rescue my mind for brief periods.

I know I should focus on the good things, yet the other things have been overwhelming, especially in the current political climate.

I wish someone would wave a magic wand over me, like in those old Calgon ads.

I wish the deities, or powers-that-be, had me living in a parallel universe that didn’t include cancer, wars, 47, and that allowed me to feel peace.

Posted for The Sound of One Hand Typing’s Writer’s Workshop. I chose to try out his second prompt: Write a post in exactly 8 sentences. It is a challenge, as when I do start writing, I want to keep going. lol

Writer’s Workshop

In October, I learned that I had stopped breathing while on the operating table. In October, I learned how lucky I am to be alive. In October, I learned what the difference is between physical therapy and occupational therapy.

October was a challenging month. October was full of ups and downs.

I spent seventeen days in a nursing facility in October. I watched more television in those seventeen days, than I watched for most of the year. I had a fairly steady flow of visitors at the SNF during my stay. Those visitors were a balm for those long days in the SNF.

Written for The Sound of One Hand Typing’s Writer’s Workshop. John Holton gives us six writing prompts to choose from. I chose two prompts for this week: (1) Write a post in exactly 9 sentences. and (2) Tell us about something you learned in October.

1. The main thing I miss is the bravery, and some of it was foolishness, that I had as a kid in the summer. I did a lot of things, with the usual abandon of a child’s heart.

2. Chasing down the ice cream truck. Everyday, my brother, friends, and I held our nickels and dimes, waiting to hear the tinny music come around the corner and down our street.

3. Being outside exploring and playing. My days were spent riding bikes, climbing trees, digging in the dirt, playing with Tonka trucks and plastic animals, and exploring all the nooks and crannies in the neighborhood.

4. Roller Skating. I started roller skating very young. I had the metal skates that strapped on your shoes and were tightened with a skate key. I continued skating well into my adulthood. My last time on my skates was in my 50s, when I took a fall in a rink that damaged my tailbone.

5. Being able to enjoy picnics and barbecues that the grownups threw. I still enjoy a picnic or BBQ, but don’t enjoy the cleanup. Lol

6. Eating oranges. I don’t know what happened to oranges, or what changed in my body. I used to love eating oranges and drinking orange juice in the summer. Now, I go into very mild anaphylactic shock if anything I have has any oranges in it.

7. Playing on playgrounds. Swings, slides, jungle gyms, see saws, and merry-go-rounds were a favorite way to spend an afternoon.

As a bonus, this is another thing I miss – boating on the Detroit River or one of the Great Lakes.

……..

Written in response to The Sound of One Hand Typing’s Writer’s Workshop for June 13, 2024.

These were the prompts to choose from. I chose the third prompt.

  • Write a post based on the word sleep.
  • Write a post in exactly 8 sentences.
  • List and write about 7 things you miss about being a kid in summer.
  • List and write about your 10 favorite YouTube channels.
  • Take a line from a song you like and use it as the title for your post, then let your ideas flow.
  • Share something you learned last month.

Should I continue with Floundering About On A New Planet?

I enjoyed writing it.

Some people seemed to really enjoy reading it.

If I do continue, I’ll need to re-read what I wrote to get myself up to speed.

I haven’t written any parts since April 9th.

The April A to Z Challenge took almost all my time and attention.

The story is still whispering to me.

I want to know what happened to Ash.

I want to know if Jenna, Brad and crew find a new hiding spot.

I want to know if the hybrid alien gets its mind wiped, it gets dismantled, or escapes the Controller’s plans.

It may be time to answer all those questions and pay attention to the whispers.

I chose to write a post in exactly 11 sentences for this week’s Writer’s Workshop as proposed by The Sound of One Hand Typing.

Writer’s Workshop

Sixteen sentences sounds doable. I could write about how miffed I was that snow prevented me from going to Oregon for my long-time friend’s birthday. It was a BIG birthday. And she’s a member of the family, in a way. She married my cousin. They had three kids together. My son and their eldest daughter grew up together as next door neighbors. She just had her big 50th birthday. I had to miss out on that, also, because of weather. I will, hopefully, see all the family this year. I am considering a road trip through Oregon, up to Washington, to see my son for his 50th. I’m still amazed that I have a son that old. If my body didn’t crack and creak as much as it does, I’d still think of myself as quite young.

A friend and I will go camping somewhere in Oregon. We had a pretty good time camping last year. And now I have sixteen sentences.

Written for The Sound of One Hand Typing Writer’s Workshop’s Prompts for May 9, 2024 — prompt #2 (write a post in exactly 16 sentences) and prompt #5 (Write about a time when the weather interfered with your plans.), with inspiration from Fandango’s One-Word Challenge – (miffed).

Radio – Yesterday and Today

I vaguely remember the days, as a very young toddler, sitting in front of the radio with the family to listen to The George Burns and Gracie Show and other such comedies. On weekends, my Dad would turn on a radio station that played Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and other classical music.

My first real memories of the radio take place from 1962. Our family had been seduced away from the snow and cold of Michigan to the sunny shores of California. We drove across country in a 1952 Oldsmobile. Driving through Texas, my Dad turned on the radio in hopes of finding something to calm my brother and I down.

He turned the dial, finding only country music and Christian talk radio, until a new sound (to me) reached my ears. I yelled out, “Turn that back! What is that?” My Dad was not thrilled with the music, and even less thrilled when the DJ, Wolfman Jack spoke up, but if it kept my brother and I quiet, he was willing to sacrifice some of his peace to bring peace to the car.

I was shocked to learn that some of the music being played came from Motown, MY TOWN! How did I not know about this?

Later that year, my Dad gave me a transistor radio for my birthday. I could now listen to all the rock ‘n’ roll that my little heart craved.

Over the years, I had become fascinated with other types of radios. My interest really started when I was very young. My Dad was a ham radio operator. He met my mother through her brother, who was a ham in Chicago.

I used a CB Radio for several years, before it got inundated with creepy guys looking to hook up. When I was married, my husband was a ham radio operator. He and I built a 2-meter. (Yes, I was a bit of an electronic’s geek back then.)

These days, I generally only listen to SiriusXM radio in the car, and only if I’m not listening to an audio book.

None of these photos are my original photos but they are similar to the items I owned. (Well, except Wolfman Jack. No one could ever own the Wolfman.}

There are so many stories I could tell, relating to the radio prompt provided by the Writer’s Workshop Prompts for March 28, 2024, and maybe I’ll remember to share some more in the future.

Writer’s Workshop for March 21st – Prompt #2

What can I write in ten sentences? Wait, does that count as a sentence, since it was a question? Oh, no, another question! I have now wasted three of my sentences. Four if you count that last one. Oh, geesh, time to think of something pithy to say. Maybe I should have written about my first airplane trip, instead. At least, that might have taken flight. Well, that will have to happen at some other time. I’ve run out of sentences.

(This was my first time trying out The Sound of One Hand Typing’s weekly Writer’s Workshop Prompts. I chose #2, which was, “Write a post in exactly 10 sentences.”)
