Posted 10 years ago! From 2016, Nintendo Shovel Knight Amiibo was a big deal - a third party Amiibo! From an indie studio! Doing retro-flavored games, at fair prices, that people love to play! Yacht Club Games has had tougher times (and painfully few releases) since its big blue debut, but hey maybe Mina the Hollower will actually get finished this year. There is a blue Shovel Knight, but also a gold one. They're not terribly expensive if you want one.

Mattel Has New Font

  Via Fast Company: Mattel has a new custom font, and it's full of playful hidden details. Who cares? Well, I do, this sort of thing is going to be of interest to customizers and pranksters at the very least.
The article says the "typeface called Matty and Belle Mattel Sans, can be translated into multiple languages, read in even the smallest of fine print, and used on everything from social media and pitch decks to product packaging." If you've ever designed tiny stickers or signs that need to be read at a distance, or fine print, this sort of thing always strikes me as interesting. If you've never seen debates over which font to use on a street sign, you've never lived. I have not yet found a source to download it.

 Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Night Trooper (All-White Helmet, The Vintage Collection). It's a 2024 release with four figures, all of which have at least some unique parts - the ribbons are differently configured per trooper, and the helmets are painted differently. This one has a helmet that's mostly white, with a little gold on it. That's good! But it uses a mold that's feeling more than a little old. He could use a hip replacement. Read the whole review.

I'd love there to be more of these, but stores near me are poor about stocking most new waves and you just never see anything but the same figures from a few years ago - well, maybe they'll get out some day. Old! The Playmobil "Fi?ures" Figures Fairy is probably just a fairy. Maybe there's more significance to her costume than I see, but despite the pixie cut and wings she reminds me a lot of She-Ra. The figure has a lot of painted detail, and for some reason no shoes. She'd be a great chancellor of a school, I think. The armor looks great and the painted-on deco looks superb on her torso. Now, do I have any real idea where she will go? Not really. But as a wiser man than I once told me, pretty much every Playmobil figure could be a cosplayer at a convention, so they can fit somewhere. Two heads in one! Blokees Transformers Defender Version 05 Traitor to Tyranny SG-Jetfire Action Figure is annoyingly a good figure that took the slot of the regular Jetfire. Sure, it's a nice chase, but I need the regular one too. The head can be rotated around to go from "toy" to "cartoon," but more importantly it's a cheap way to get the evil version of Jetfire. The Cyber Battalion figures were surprisingly robust for the price, and required some detective work to find before they started to show up at Universal Studios or, in some cases, Amazon. They're neat.

It's from a 4-pack, and has a body that was 11 years old when it was new... and it still looks pretty good. It has the obvious limitations on articulation granted from being an older figure with classic hip joints and swivel wrists, but it's still a pretty nifty figure to fill out your snow dioramas. The goggles don't fit so well though.

Purple! Blokees Transformers Defender Version 05 Traitor to Tyranny Galvatron Action Figure draws inspiration from his TV coloration, with a lot of printed detail and not a lot of extra paint. The chase versions are much more colorful, but this is the one you're more statistically likely to find. I think he turned out well, and he's probably ready to shoot a Sweep in the face. Old! Outer Space Men Bluestar Astrodite Action Figure is still available for $20, and it's pretty decent. If you want a nice blue glow that lasts hours, with a distinctive figure, you might dig this one. The blue paint blocks a little glow so you can see more of the figure's forms, and the staff helps her keep upright. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Posted 10 years ago! From 2015, Funko Dorbz DC Comics Super Heroes Orange Batman Vinyl Figure is a form factor that's no longer being made, but it looks pretty cool. Funko had packaging open on both sides, so you can see the whole figure without opening the box. I'm kind of surprised we don't see more of that in other toys. There isn't much you can do to play with it, but it's a nice desk decoration.

Comic MOTU Skeletor Shows Up Early

  Via me on Bluesky: Walmart's putting out the golden "Revenge of Skeletor" Masters of the Universe figure for $9.96.. Pre-orders are supposed to go up as part of Walmart's "collector con," but this gold-enhanced figure was already on shelves Saturday. And cheap. The body seems to be the new movie buck, and the price is dirt cheap.
Articulation is very similar to the past few years of figures, but they dropped the ankle joints. Given he's half the price of an Origins figure, even though he's a hair shorter, I think it's worth the trade. I had no intention of paying $20 for another Skeletor, but $10? I can do $10.

Newish! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Deluxe Windcharger Action Figure is cartoony and excellent. Not only does his head rotate, but his face can look down or up. The magnetic energy effects are a nice touch too, and as we're fond of saying everywhere "this is the last one of this guy you'll ever need." And then Hasbro will make an even better one in five years, or one with a 1984-specific toy-style head rather than a cartoon one. Read on!

Kolchak Book Action Figures Kickstarter

  Via Kickstarter: Kolchak: The Night Stalker 1/12 Scale Collectible Figures are already funded. Wandering Planet Toys is making a few figures based on the book, plus a lunch box based on the graphic novel. (That's why he doesn't quite look like Darren McGavin.) If you've never seen the show, or movies, or books, it's sort of like what you'd expect from The X-Files in the 1970s. A reporter is the hero. There are monsters. Conspiracy theories weren't really a thing. It's entertaining stuff and, of course, based on a book.
One 6-inch figure is $38, which seems pretty decent when you put it in context of a similarly sized mass-market figure hitting $25-$30. They're making Carl Kolchak, plus a two pack of Skorzeny and a bloodied Kolchak, plus also variant cardbacks. You can spend some money here, if you're so inclined. I assume TV versions and maybe some day Columbo could happen somewhere, but 50 years on it's feeling like it's taking too long.

Star Wars Review: Han Solo (1995 Classic Edition 4-Pack)

 Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Han Solo (1995 Classic Edition 4-Pack). A semi-infamous collection of figures due to their smaller stature and altered colors from the 1970s and 1980s originals, these figures are an interesting curiosity today. This Toys "R" Us exclusive Han has a "Kenner blue" blaster, only it's a different blue... and the original Han never had a blue blaster. Despite predating scanning technology, Han retains a surprising amount of detail that we saw lost in the 2019 The Retro Collection reissue. This figure also aged incredibly well, at 31 years old I feel no oily residues or squeaky joints. Further, the 4-pack is still somewhat cheap if you're in the market for some oddball variations like these guys. I should have given them a look earlier, but I have to admit they're far more interesting in 2026 given the thousands of figures that have come since his debut.

Unpainted! Blokees Transformers Defender Version 06 Brutal Fang BW-Megatron-T. rex Action Figure is molded in color, and a fun chunky little dinosaur. You don't have enough tiny dinosaur kits in your life, so this Beast Wars toy is a pretty solid pull if you can find these blind boxes. He has a little fire piece too, which isn't really necessary but I'm not complaining. Read on, and come back Monday for more!

Walmart: Digital Price Tags Coming

  Via CNBC: Walmart digital price labels are coming to every store shelf in U.S. by end of 2026. We have had these in some stores since last year, and I find them to be a mixed bag. If products are shelved properly, and the tags are functioning? They're great. They show new clearance prices, sales, and other handy information.
I have also seen a lot of non-functioning tags, as well as items with no price tag in site. For example, the Collector Island pilot program from last year seems to have ended. The remaining products were just strewn around stores in Phoenix and Scottsdale, so it's not obvious if they're on clearance or what they cost. I've also seen batteries labeled as canned vegetables and other similar errors in entire departments.
I assume you can buy thousands of paper tags for the price of a handful of digital ones, and I'm not sure if pricing will change on a whim when it comes time for another tariff adjustment or other "market price" situations. I'd really love to see a return of scanners, because the web site doesn't reflect clearance prices or managerial markdowns. (Fun fact: clearance cake is a thing.)

Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Galvatron

Old! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Galvatron came out last year, and is one of several versions of this mold as this character. Dirty purple, regular purple, reformatting purple, toy gray, and of course a Straxus retool, just to name a few, may already be yours. This might be the best one for people aiming for cartoon deco, though, so give it a look. Or be happy with what you h ave. Check this one out. Read on!

Starfleet Academy Ending after Season 2

  Via Variety: 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' to End With Season 2 (EXCLUSIVE). Presumably the show is only getting a season two because it had been shot while season one was airing. I'd like to see the show keep going - the characters were fun, the actors were fantastic, and the stories were all pretty great. I'd make a crack about Caleb looking 30ish and trying to find his mom who looked 40ish, but still, it was a good show and you should check it out. It's got a lot more good Tig Notaro moments than a Discovery season, and each episode was considerably longer than most Trek at about 60 minutes per (not including ads.)
Fan backlash before the show aired was, well, it's what franchise fans do when most things get a new entry. As someone who actually watched the whole thing, I am generally unable to find much to bemoan other than the very short length of the season, and I guess now the series too. I don't think any show is going to have a crack at building a fanbase with 1-3 seasons of 10 episodes each, and I hope the studios consider giving people a chance to make the show a regular part of their lives rather than a thing they can binge in a single weekend. Also Sam is great, we love Sam here.
With Starfleet Academy ending after season 2 and Strange New Worlds ending after a truncated season 5, there are no other shows known to be in development. It's possible Star Trek might go to movies or just go away again.

Takara-Tomy Doing Transformers G2 Menasor Set?

New product coming soon! Exciting.
While only a silhouette, it appears to be Generation 2 Menasor made out of the Legends molds. So far, Hasbro has made and released Shadowstrip - notably painted differently than Drag Strip ever was - as well as Dead End and Breakdown. Dead End's deco and decals appear slightly different in Takara-Tomy's teaser image. As Hasbro hasn't yet made a Wildrider or Motormaster, this set could be pretty compelling.
What will it cost? No idea. The "New Legends" glowing Lio Convoy was around $60, which is expensive for a single Voyager. On the other hand, the Dramatic Capture Series redeco toys have generally been in line with Hasbro's American toys, if not sometimes slightly cheaper. I'll be watching with great interest.

Blue! Playmobil "Fi?ures" Figures Mermaid has blue hair and a clam friend for some reason. The articulation is pretty good, with a bonus tail joint, and decent bubble deco in case the sea had no actual bubbles around. It's colorful, and was a blind bag pull from about five years ago.   Via CNBC: 'U.S. Postal Service seeks 8% fuel surcharge for package deliveries as Iran war raises oil prices. The USPS fleet was preparing to convert to electric vehicles. That didn't happen, so now USPS will punish America with an 8% surcharge on priority mail and parcel delivery offerings.
This might impact quite a bit. Some freight and raw materials, and many deliveries to the end user, could wind up eating into any "what if the tariffs go away?" savings real fast in the mail order spaces.

 Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: General Veers (AT-AT Driver, The Vintage Collection). The Imperial Officer buck from a few years ago is retooled with one of the best original trilogy human likenesses we've ever had. The helmet is removable. There's no chin strap or micorphone. The armor is fused to the chest. But it looks amazing, so you probably want to upgrade your 2006 Veers or your 2010 generic AT-AT Driver.

Ship happens! Blokees Transformers Defender Version 05 Traitor to Tyranny Jetfire Vehicle comes in cartoon colors, so as to not anger the anime overlords. Bat Boy Found in Kickstarter Update

  Via the Kickstarter for The Cryptoids: The Legend Lives! Bat Boy Has Entered The Battle! Arguably a very "you had to be there" part of the 1990s was its interest in the supernatural via call-in radio and supermarket tabloids. You may know somebody - or be somebody - who listened to Art Bell, or read The Weekly World News, or saw The X-Files as a documentary. Bat Boy was a fixture in 1990s supermarket checklane newspapers, and also made many appearances in corners of the weird and fun part of the punk rock scene of that time. He even has a Wikipedia page, which mentions a musical which I did not know about. Well, now there's an action figure.
I'm not saying this is some required purchase or anything, but it's a remarkably odd bit of kitsch that I never expected to see as an action figure. Good on all parties involved for working something out.
