Summer Learning Fun

We have 2 more days of school left. :-) We don't do any formal school during summer, but I still want to do some fun projects.

Last summer, we participated in Unplug Your Kids and I plan on doing it as often as possible this summer. Each week, there is a theme and you create some kind of project based on that theme. For example, this week's theme is: HOMEMADE. It's supposed to be a "surprise" but I'm thinking about making homemade noodles like my mom makes. Or, some kind of homemade food that we've never tried before.

I also plan on doing Barb's Outdoor Hour Challenges like we used to do. This week's challenge is to study woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches or towhees. We see the first two in our yard fairly often, so we'll pick one of those.

And, we'd like to start doing the Think! challenges again, also. We were enjoying these, but we just got too busy I guess. I think the "new" challenge will be up in a day or 2 and I'll wait for it.

So, those are 3 weekly activities we will do when we aren't on the road. I think we're going to have a great summer!

Oh, and if you know of any other weekly challenges, let me know! I'd really like one about cooking with kids - something like a weekly recipe to try.

Think!ing over the holidays

While visiting family during Christmastime, I decided to do some Think! challenges.

This "Christmas Tree Challenge" was completed by my mom (left), myself (middle) and Alexandra (right). You were given a list of supplies and were supposed to make a tree. The tree was supposed to hold as many ornaments (or birds) as possible. We used beans for our ornaments. You couldn't even use glue - our ornaments are being held in place by gum!!! And, you had to have the tree stand up and include a trunk, branches, and leaves. This was a hard, but fun, challenge!

On another day, I proposed the "marshmallow arch challenge" to my sister, niece, and daughter. I think this challenge would have been a LOT simpler with the large marshmallows. But, we only had small marshmallows, so we built our arches with those!

my niece's arch - sister made one, too, but her photo came out even worse! :-)

Think! Club - Windmill

Alexandra and I had our Think! club yesterday. Unfortunately, neither of the other 2 girls could attend. This week we made windmills out of the following: 2 pieces of paper, 2 straws, 1 button, 6 inches of thread (we cheated and made this piece longer, but after sewing it was probably 6 inches or less) and a button. This was a lot of fun and took quite a bit of "think"ing!

Think! Club - Apple Carving

Our Think! Club had fun again on Monday doing a challenge from the Think! blog. This challenge was to carve apples into something recognizable using only toothpicks and your teeth. We had 3 girls and 2 moms and we all enjoyed our carving time!

Think! club

I started a "Think! Club" based on the Think! blog. We only had one other mom and daughter this week, but I think we might have several more girls this coming week.

We did 2 of the challenges. One was to use paper clips and build something recognizable. I ended up buying paper clips at the last minute and they were shaped differently and kept breaking - but we still had fun.

The 2nd challenge we did was to make a boat of tin foil and straws and see how many pennies it would hold before it sank. Mine held 285! It was fun and we're looking forward to our club this coming week. If you haven't checked out this blog with her weekly challenges, check it out! It's fun!!!
