Witches in the Workplace

While paranormal and fantasy stories seem to be all magic and whimsy, one of the aspects I love the most about the genre is how it can be blended with reality. In my latest Philadelphia Coven Chronicles book, Rising for Autumn, I tackled a lot of the real-world difficulties facing the boss of a big organization, enhanced a thousandfold by the fact that they’re all witches. With all the crazy situations the characters get into like blossoming romance interrupted by growling wights or battling fae on every street corner, it’d be easy to lose touch with the human side of things.

Best way to connect the readers to the characters? Give them human problems, real-life issues apart from the magic-induced ones. So while witches, hunters, fae, and necromancers are fighting throughout the city, the leader of the Coven is also dealing with the weight of being a boss. Instead of a regular office of employees, Alanna Carrington has an entire building of witches in her employ, the sort of crazy that equates to herding cats.

What makes Alanna’s situation even more relatable is the personal issues she has to shove aside due to her responsibilities. Even though her brother died the year before, she hasn’t been able to lean on anyone since she’s the leader of the Coven, and during the span of the book, that stress of that burden weighs on her more and more. Sure, she might be dealing with necromancers raising the dead and falling for a djinn who hates her guts, but despite the supernatural aspects, she’s as human as they come.

So if you’re tackling the realm of urban fantasy and having trouble grounding your characters, don’t forget their real life details. What frustrates them at their jobs? What do they like to geek out over? In my latest novel, Alanna might seem like an ice queen, but her stoic appearance hides a plethora of problems and a secret obsession with horror movies.  As much as the worldbuilding aspect of any magic-related universe can sometimes take over the story, your protagonists are what make the story come alive.

Rising for Autumn
Philadelphia Coven Chronicles #3
By Katherine McIntyre

Crisis and danger have become second nature for Alanna Carrington. After all, as the boss of the Philadelphia Coven, she’s responsible for upholding the laws amongst the supernatural. Which means when the Order of the Serpent rears its ugly head, this time with the most powerful necromancer this city’s ever seen, she’s the one person who can keep Philly safe. Ex-Order djinn and now ally, Samuel Karim, happens to be the best-suited guy to help. Except he’s also the first man who’s stoked her interest in far too long, and ever since she commandeered the lamp he’s tethered to for safekeeping, he also hates her guts.

As the Order gathers the necromancers of her city and sparks a dangerous alliance, she finds herself working with Samuel Karim more and more. Hatred turns to passion, and when he exhibits a strength and compassion that breaks through her ironclad defenses, she finds herself falling deeper despite the complications between them. Yet with her city under siege and their lives on the line, the sharp desire between them erupts into the temptation to break their own rules, before the Order of the Serpent robs them of the chance permanently.

Cover Reveal + Giveaway: The Secret Lives of Rockstars By Suzanne Lazear

Title: The Secret Lives of Rockstars: Book One
Author: Suzanne Lazear
Publisher: Leap Books
Genre: New Adult Elf Punk, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: September 26, 2016

Blurb: Saving the world, one tour stop at a time.

Eighteen-year-old Bitsy Butler has never quite fit in, not with the dragons who raised her, the druid who took her in, or even with the non-human members of the cirque noir punk band she thinks of as family. Her chance to prove she can make it on her own comes with her band's first big solo tour. It’s all going according to plan when an angel walks into a bar and demands help with his demon problem.

If she doesn't step up, a magical war will break out, threatening Arizona and all those who call it home. With the help of a human, a sexy dragon, and the members of her band, Bitsy must stop an angry mob of chaos demons before the band leaves for their next tour stop.

It’s nice to be needed, but Bitsy has no idea how to defeat the demons and she just might get herself killed trying. But then, at least one problem would be solved...

Fitting in doesn’t matter if you’re dead.

Excerpt from The Secret Lives of Rockstars:

“I’m Jake, Jake Messenger. I’d like to speak with you alone, if you please.”
My blood ran cold and everything around us ceased to exist. “Why?”
But I knew. There was only one reason why one of the Grigori would seek me
out. Somehow celestials just knew when someone could work gates properly,
especially the angels who walked the Earth. Anyone could make gates, but it took a
linewalker to work them without it being suicide. Linewalker wasn’t a race, but an
inherent ability. One I had.
Also, if the celestials – the angels, demons, and the like – needed help from outsiders, things were very bad. The kind which ended in running, screaming, and death.
I so didn’t need this right now.

Spotlight: Phoenix by Addison Kline

Phoenix
By Addison Kline
Book 1 of the Phoenix Saga - The Phoenix

“Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Or so the book of Corinthians tells us.

Alanna Anderson does not agree with this sentiment. At the tender age of thirteen, Alanna believes that she has learned all she needs to know about love. Love is fleeting. Love is callous. Love is a lie. Growing up in the rough streets of South End, Pennsylvania, Alanna Anderson knows a thing or two about guarding her heart. Although there is a boy that vies for her attention, Alanna has no interest. She surrounds herself with the people she loves best, and immerses herself in her music and her love of literature. But one winter day, two boys forever changed Alanna’s life. One cemented Alanna’s belief that love was cruel. Another sought to prove her wrong.

Cris Serrano is new to town. Moving to the United States from Portugal, he is stepping into a world he in unfamiliar with. He is not fearful, though. Stepping forth with confidence, Cris is excited for what this new experience will hold, leaving behind a past he’d rather forget. Upon his first day at Henshaw Elementary, Cris meets Alanna Anderson and sparks fly. Their connection is one that will forever rewrite the map of their destinies – two supernovas colliding amidst a darkened sky. Not everyone believes that Alanna and Cris belong together, though.

Damien Foley has loved Alanna Anderson from the day he first set eyes upon her. Though she ignores his advances, Damien has hope that Alanna will open her heart to him. But when Cris Serrano comes to town, everything changes. Alanna gazes at Cris the way Damien wishes she would look at him. Watching her fall in love in Cris was more than Damien’s mind could take. As Alanna and Cris are enveloped in the joy of young love, a storm is brewing. With Damien’s attraction to Alanna only intensifying with each unrequited sentiment, an obsession was born.

Young love does not come easy in this gritty, romantic suspense novel. In the Phoenix Saga, they love hard, they fight hard, and the stakes are high as teens struggle to step over the echelon of adulthood.

Summer Love

With all of the books in my Philadelphia Coven Chronicles, the seasons factor into the books in a major way. So when I was sitting down to work on Scrying for Summer, I knew I had to tackle a love story that represented the season. However, summer love has been tackled in so many romance novels to the point it’s become a trope. After all, so many people have stories about summer love, especially during their earlier years, like high school and college.
So of course, I had to add my own contribution to the plethora of summer love tales, yet try to put my own spin on it. This isn’t some beachside romance—after all, we’re dealing with fae and all manner of beastie, so we see the grislier side of Philadelphia’s supernatural life. So instead, I chose to focus on relating the elements of the relationship to what summer comes to symbolize. Hot, flaring passion, intensity, and sizzling tempers. Since Jev and Liam clash from the get-go, their headspace was easy to sink into, and the hot summer weather just added fuel to their frustration.

Other seasons might take on different overtones—maybe hope and rebirth with spring, melting down of cold temperaments with the winter, but with the heat and passion that summer inspires, it’s unsurprising that it’s a popular time of year for love. Aspects like weather and time of year play such a unique role in stories that it’s worth exploring what they can do for you when you’re writing, and if you’re sitting down and reading a book, take note of what’s happening in the background. You just might discover deeper dimensions to the story than you initially realized.

Either way, romances during the hot days of summer don’t seem to be vanishing any time soon. If anything, they’re picking up steam.

Scrying For Summer
By Katherine McIntyre

Jev was looking for an adventure, however she wanted the usual variety of stomping out nasty fae in the city as an enforcer of the Philly Coven. Instead, handsome as sin Liam O'Reilly shows up on her doorstep dropping news of the worst organization of fae they'd dealt with on the rise again. Except, he's a traitor, an asshole, and the absolute last person she wants to work with.

However, the longer they work together, the more the fire between them burns, turning from rage and irritation into something primal. And as she gets to know the real Liam O'Reilly behind the charming smiles and sexy lines, he becomes so much deadlier. Because the protective, self-sacrificing man underneath his facade is just the sort she could fall for.

A modern day Renaissance-woman, Katherine McIntyre has learned soapmaking, beer brewing, tea blending, and most recently roasting coffee. Most of which make sure she’s hydrated and bathed while she spends the rest of her time writing. With a desire to travel and more imagination than she knows what to do with, all the stories jumping around in her head led to the logical route of jotting them down on paper. She writes novels with snarky women, ragtag crews, and guys with bad attitudes. High chances for a passionate speech thrown into the mix.

Excerpt
Liam stepped away from her desk and crossed his arms as he waited for Jev to respond, the silence setting his nerves aflame. The entire Coven building gave him the jitters—too much magic brewing in this place, and as he strode through he’d garnered more than a couple nasty gazes. Not like he hadn’t earned them. Anyone who knew his past discretions already juried him as a screwup. He couldn’t help but notice the steel in her gaze as the girl with the brilliant mind weighed her options. Since he’d last seen her, she’d changed her hair to a lush cerulean that even in the yellowed light of the library shone like a jewel.

Jev hissed out a breath, and her fingertips curled around the edge of the large book she clutched. Her full lips pursed as she met his gaze, a resigned and more than a little irritated look in her own.

“Fine, consider me baited.” She glared at him before using the desk to push herself up. “Spill.”

Liam shook his head, casting a glance around the spacious room. Jev had earned his trust through the blood of battle even if she hated his guts. However, the entire Coven of witches didn’t need to overhear the information he had to discuss. “Not here.”

Her brow quirked up. “Yeah, because I’m going to just follow you to a dark alley where you can kidnap and murder me?”

The comment hit him like a blow to the gut, but he didn’t let it show. After all, he’d had years of experience playing a part, and the cruel and unaffected act had become a specialty. “Pick a public place, and we’ll go.” Even here in the library, where the books far outnumbered the witches present, the press of gazes made him uneasy. He spent years with no allies, watching his every move and every phrase until paranoia had sunk into his veins.

“Diner up the street. The owner’s a friend of mine, so if you decide to pull any hinky shit, not only will I kick your ass, but he will too.” She bent down to loop her messenger bag around her shoulder before tapping a finger on the desk. “No time like the present.”

Liam blinked in surprise at her quick-as-a-breeze pace, but rather than commenting, he jammed his hands into his pockets and gave her a nod. As they strode up the steps of the library, their footsteps echoing throughout the cavernous place, he cast a glance her way. “You know, if I was planning on ‘pulling hinky shit,’ I’d hope I was intelligent enough to nab you outside your home or something rather than escorting you out of your workplace with hundreds of dangerous witnesses.”

Jev let out a snort. “The jury’s still out on your level of intellect. After all, you signed up with Evil Incorporated in the first place.”

EXCERPT
It was my haste that made me stumble halfway down the stairs. Only a wild, wrenching grasp at the carved wooden rail saved me from a broken neck. Alas, the heavy fall of my feet echoed up the staircase and drew my father from his rooms.

“Patsy?” he called, peering over the bannister.

I froze, breathless, my belly roiling with shock and anger and revulsion. I ought to have pretended that I didn’t hear him say my name. I ought to have hurried on, leaving him with only the sight of my back. I ought never to have looked up at him over my shoulder.

But I did look up.

There on the landing my father loomed tall, a tendril of his ginger hair having come loose from its ribbon, his shirt worn without its neck cloth, the stark white linen setting off more vividly the red flush that crept up his throat. Was it shame for his behavior with Sally or . . . ardor?

On the heels of giving witness to his behavior, the thought was so excruciatingly horrifying that heat swept over me, leaving me to wish I’d burn away to dust.

“Are you hurt?” Papa asked, hoarsely.

I couldn’t reply, my mouth too filled with the bitter taste of bile. Finally, I forced a shake of my head.

He glanced back to the door, then back at me, his hand half-covering his mouth. “Were—were you at my door just now?”

“No,” I whispered, as much as I could manage under my suffocating breathlessness. And how dare he ask if I’d been at his door when neither of us could bear the honest answer? Even if Papa didn’t know what I’d seen, he knew what he’d done.

He ought to have been downstairs with us, reacquainting himself with the little daughter who still didn’t remember him. He ought to have been sipping cider with the young man who fancied me, giving his permission to court. He ought to have been doing a hundred other things. Instead, he was preying upon my dead mother’s enslaved half-sister—and the wrongness of it filled my voice with a defiant rage.

“No, I wasn’t at your door.” I held his gaze, letting him see what he would.

My father paused on the precipice, clearing his throat, absently smearing the corner of his lips with one thumb. “Well—well. . .did you need something?” As if my needs were at the forefront of his thoughts.

My fingers curled into fists as a lie came to me suddenly, and sullenly. “I was coming up to fetch my prayer book.” Surely he knew it was a lie, but I didn’t care. If he challenged me, I’d lie again, without even the decency of dropping my eyes. I’d lie because between a father and a daughter, what I’d witnessed was unspeakable. And I’d learned from the man who responded with silence to my letters about politics or adultery or the liberation of slaves. . . .

Papa never spoke on any subject he didn’t want to.

Neither would I.

“Are you certain you weren’t hurt,” Papa finally murmured, “ . . . on the stairs?”

Rage burned inside me so hotly I thought it possible that my handprint might be seared upon the railing. I bobbed my head, grasped my skirt, and took two steps down before my father called to me again.

“Patsy?”

I couldn’t face him, so I merely stopped, my chest heaving with the effort to restrain myself from taking flight. “What?

A heavy silence descended. One filled with pregnant emotion. I feared he might be so unwise as to attempt to explain himself, to justify or confess his villainous lapse in judgment, but when he finally spoke, it was only to ask, “What of your prayer book?”

Swallowing hard, I forced words out despite the pain. “I’ve reconsidered my need of it. I’m not as apt as some people to forget what it says.”

Excerpt
As we worked our way from front to back, the two-seater revealed itself to be a masterpiece of restoration. The sweeping curves, the gleaming wire wheels…simply stunning. When we finished, Ben put the folded canvas in the back of the Land Rover. “I normally keep the Jag in the garage at home when it rains,” he explained, “but that storm the other day caught me by surprise.” I didn’t even try to hide my admiration. Ben beamed. “Would you like to sit inside?” I must not have heard him correctly. “What?” “Sit. In the car.” He pointed at the right-hand seat where the steering wheel was located, British-style. “Driver’s side, of course.” “Really?” As many car shows as I’d been to, no one had ever offered to let me get inside. “Really.” He walked around and opened the door for me. “Go ahead.” “Okay.” Tentatively, I slid onto the seat. Ben shut the door behind me, then walked around and got into the passenger seat. All at once, I recognized the combination of scents that I’d noticed the first time I’d met Ben: old leather, cotton, and wool. Now the leather part made sense. Ben seemed to be enjoying my reactions. I let myself relax a little. My hand hovered tentatively over the steering wheel. “May I…?” “Of course.” I rested one hand on the wheel and ran the other along the side of my seat, which was tan and as soft as butter. I practically moaned, “My god, this leather…” “Yeah, that took some work.” “What do you mean?” Ben stroked the dashboard. “When I found this car, she was on blocks in a barn outside of Lancaster, covered with nothing but a tarp and a bunch of hay bales.” He shook his head. “The body was in bad shape, but the chrome was savable.” My eyes widened. “You mean you restored it?” He nodded. “Not by myself, of course. I put the word out online that I needed parts, and about fifty Marines sourced them for me from around the globe.” He pointed to the speedometer. “That’s from Melbourne. The wheels came from four different countries.” As Ben continued giving me the inventory of various car parts and their origins, his whole demeanor changed. His expression brightened and he relaxed, managerial stiffness giving way to boyish enthusiasm. I felt my own spirits lifting as I got caught up in his animated description of the invisible web of people who had worked to save the neglected Jaguar. As he spoke, Ben rested his hand next to mine on the steering wheel, close enough that I could feel the heat of his skin. I inhaled deeply as the whispering warmth of attraction was once again ignited, tickling my hand and flowing up my arm….I cursed inwardly. So it hadn’t been a tai chi anomaly after all. It’s okay, I reassured myself, you can handle this. Just back away slowly. I slid my hand off of the steering wheel and sank back into my seat.

Guest Blog & Series Relaunch: Lucani Lovers by Stephanie Julian

Who wouldn’t want to be a shifter?
I mean, seriously, the ability to change your body into a completely animal? Coolest ability ever, right?
Wolves are the most common shifters in paranormal romance and there’s a good reason for that. They’re sleek, stealthy and smart. The perfect predators. And they make the perfect alpha heroes (and heroines).
In the Lucani Lovers series, my wolves were given the ability to shift centuries ago by the Etruscan Moon Goddess. In ancient Rome, they were the special ops forces of the Roman Legion.
In today’s world, they’ve adapted. They’ve gotten good at hiding in plain sight.
But what happens when the outside world begins to encroach and trouble arrives at their door?
          Then these wolves get deadly.
The Lucani Lovers series is part of my Etruscan Magic world, which also includes the Darkly Enchanted, Magical Seduction and Forgotten Goddesses series. They’re all based on the premise that there’s still magic in our world. Fairies, elves, satyrs, shifters and witches.
Each of the books have a unique twist on what you think you know about these myths and tales. And all have a steamy romance at their core.
There are six stories in the Lucani Lovers series: Kiss of Moonlight, Moonlight Ménage, Edge of Moonlight, Moonlight Temptation, Grace in Moonlight and Shades of Moonlight.
Each has a stand-alone love story with one or two hot heroes.
These stories were previously released but I’ve re-edited and revised and, in the case of Kiss of Moonlight and Moonlight Ménage, have rewritten the endings and expanded the story.
I can’t wait for readers to discover (or rediscover) my wolves. I’ve loved revisiting and reacquainting myself with them.
And I’m anxious to get back to my Etruscan Magic world with new stories. But more on that later…

Kiss of Moonlight, Second Chapter Excerpt

Even though twilight had fallen, she could still see him plainly in the light of the full moon. Moonlight suited him. It softened his hard edges. She wanted to run her hands along that shadowed jaw and across that broad chest, sink her fingers into his hair.
Still standing by his chair on the other side of the table, he walked around to her, holding out his hand.
Without thought, she reached for him, watching his lips curl into a devastating smile as he drew her to her feet. Only inches separated them, inches she wanted to close.
They stood like that for what had to be a full minute, staring into each other’s eyes like they were starring in a Lifetime TV movie.
It should’ve embarrassed her. Or at the very least, made her self-conscious. At worst, she should be running in fear in the opposite direction.
It emboldened her to know she wasn’t scared at all.
Instead, she leaned a little closer, drawn by the warmth of his eyes, the heat of his body.
Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me kept chanting through her brain.
As if he’d heard her thoughts, his smile faded and desire turned to sharp, biting hunger in her gut.
Then he blinked and began to pull back, shaking his head. “Tam…”
          No, no, no.
Fevered compulsion made her curve her hand around the back of his neck as she rose on her tiptoes. She shouldn’t have been able to reach his mouth, the top of her head barely reached his shoulder. But he met her halfway, his short groan cut off when their lips met. He pressed hard, his lips firm and hot on hers, his arms wrapping around her back and plastering her to his body.
She moaned, wanting more, but he immediately eased his hold, ratcheted back some of the passion she sensed in his kiss and let her take the lead. Let her press against him. As if he was afraid of scaring her.
But that wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted him to kiss her. Really kiss her until she lost herself in him. Buried old, horrible memories under an avalanche of lust.
So she forced him closer, wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him harder.
Letting her tongue lick at the seam of his lips, she teased until he opened his mouth. She would’ve thrust inside but he beat her to it, finally starting to loosen his hold on his leashed desire.
His hands flattened on her back, each finger a hot brand through her thin t-shirt. The tips pressed into her back for several seconds before easing up to rest there lightly.
Don’t stop. More.
