Note
(rest day)

Pretty beat up after yesterday's adventure. Had a couple of hard falls - no long term damage but some bruises and muscle soreness. No cramping until about 9:45 and I was pretty much able to walk through it.

Fools Rogaine put on by NYARA. Ten hour event with each control worth one point. Six maps with 113 check points, marked with orange ribbons. The six areas had narrow connection corridors between them (to avoid crossing private property). We were also provided with some maps with blown up detail and a couple of overview maps. Total of 15 pages, so lots of clerical detail. Plus we had to record a two digit code at each check point. Map scales varied and were non-round numbers to fit various size areas on letter size paper. Weather was just about perfect - below freezing at the 8am start but sunny with the temperature rising to the low 50s.

I got to 84 checkpoints, getting all of the points on 4 of the maps and half on the fifth map. Navigation was fairly straightforward with lots of trails (if you could see them), lakes, and contour features. Lots of interesting features used for control sites - old mining pits, caves, scenic vistas, large rock features. One big tactical error when I visited an out-of-the way control, only to go right by it later. Spent some time at a few locations just finding the ribbons (sometimes they were very visible, other times they weren't). Long hike back to the finish and I was 10 minutes over the 10-hour limit. Fortunately there was no overtime penalty (and there were many who finished after I did).
