IX Panel: From the Ground Up: World-building to Publication - Sunday 10/24

IX is next week! Since this is my first event since February 2020, and it will be the debut of the full Grand Bazaar experience I have been planning and preparing for weeks. I believe I am ready, save for loading everything into a trailer, getting it all to Reading, PA, and then setting it up. But at this point, all that seems like a tiny bit of work compared to everything I have done recently. While IX will be the best five days of imaginative realism art, it will also be full of lectures, demonstrations, and panels. As it would happen, I am hosting one of those panels.

From the Ground Up: World-building to Publication

Join me along with Allen Panakal, Jon Sideriadis, and David Thorn Wenzel as we discuss our various methods for world-building and storytelling. We will also discuss and share the different options we used to see our works published. The ups and downs, what worked and what didn't, and everything in between relating to the creation of worlds and getting them printed will be covered. There will also be plenty of time for questions from the audience.

I am genuinely looking forward to this panel to talk and share our experiences in creating and publishing our worlds. I hope to see you there with plenty of questions ready for the Q&A.

I will be back here on the blog after IX with pictures, stories, and more!

That is all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here after IX. Until then...

AradaniCon Wrap Up

This past Friday and Saturday, I was able to take part in AradaniCon, a free online convention hosted by the good folks at Aradani Studios. There were panel, demos, cosplay, artist hangouts, gaming, and a late-night digital dance party. While I could not attend as much as I would have liked (computer failures and unexpected real-world issues), I took part in the artist hang out and Sam Flegal's panel, How to Find Your Voice as an Artist. It was Sam, Allen Panakal, and me talking about art, making art, inspiration, and more. We took questions from those watching live, and I had a blast. It is available in its entirety on YouTube.

How to Find Your Voice as an Artist

For the time being, I think this may be the way of things, and I see more of this happening in general in the future. It was fun, easy, costs only time, and was a way to connect with people all around the country and world nearly seamlessly. A HUGE thanks to all the Bielaczycs and all of their work done to get things up and working, inviting me to take part, and making it all happen. Really good times!

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Pensacon Next Week! ...and MORE.

One week from today, I will be returning to Pensacon for the best three days at a convention that Florida has to offer. Pensacon is always a ton of fun, and this year should be no different. I will have my remaining client-related stock marked down as I continue to clear out my inventory in advance of the Grand Bazaar. But don't worry, I will be talking at length about the Grand Bazaar while at Pensacon.

Come see me at Pensacon 2020!

As previously mentioned here on the blog, I will be taking part in three panels at Pensacon. Two of them are on Friday, and one is on Saturday and should offer up some great information regarding art, games, and working as an artist. If you are attending and have questions regarding making monsters and art, you should really stop by these panels.

Pensacon panels for all your Pensacon panels needs.

And the elephant in the room... We are just over one week from the launch of the Kickstarter for my book, The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! I should clarify because it is actually THREE books that will be part of the Kickstarter. ALL THREE ARE 100% DONE and ARE ALREADY AT THE PRINTERS! There is also a super awesome crest of Ethra enamel pin too! Read more about all of these here. It's finally here. All I need now is your help. Let's make the Grand Bazaar a reality!

Coming to Kickstarter 02/29/2020 @ 10am EST

That is all for another exciting week on the blog, see you back here on Monday! Until then...

Pensacon 2020 Panel Schedule

We are just over two weeks away from Pensacon and the launch of The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia Kickstarter (Feb 29!!!!). The Pensacon app and website have been updated with the panel and event schedules. I will be on three panels this year, and I am already looking forward to them. All of the information can be found over on the Pensacon website, or right here for your convenience.

Be sure to check out my panel schedule, as well as the rest of the guests, planned events!

I will be talking about something I know a few things about on Friday from 4-4:45pm... MONSTERS! This is a great lineup, and there should be a lot of information to be shared during this panel.

From 5:15-6pm on Friday, I will be sharing the stage with a fellow RPG artist that I have done several panels with before, Brian LeBlanc. We will be answering your questions and talking about working in the industry.

Lastly, on Saturday from 11-11:45am, I will be part of a great line up of artists talking about illustration. This should be an excellent opportunity to get questions answered from a group of artist that work on a diverse range of projects.

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Making Monsters Workshop at Illuxcon 2019!

The circle is now complete. In 2009 I attended my first IX in Altoona, PA, and it blew my mind. I took my first step into a larger world, I meet working artists, saw for the first time traditionally created imaginative realism art, and realized what it would take to succeed in the gaming industry. Since then, I have only missed attended one year. Each year has been a little different and offered up new revelations and insights into being an artist. Now, in 2019, I find myself returning to the Main Show for the second time, and for the first time, I am hosting a workshop on making and drawing monsters!

Some see me in Studio 411 bright and early at 10am till 1pm for a talk and demo of making monsters!

During the three hour block that I have for the workshop, I will be talking about the process I go about designing and creating monsters, the process and techniques or drawing them, and will answering any and all questions about my work, process, and working in the industry. I am hoping it will be a lot of fun, and I hope to share some of the experience I have gained over the last twenty years of making monsters.

Studio 411 is on the fourth floor of the GoogleWorks building.
There will be plenty of signage or look for the troll with the pencils.

You can check out all of the other workshops, panels, and presentations going on in the IX program, which is now available online. There is a lot of great events planned this year, and if you are attending, there should be plenty to fill your days and your mind. But don't forget to visit all the artists in the Main Show and the Showcase.

While this is my first workshop at IX, I would be remiss to mention the fantastic panel I was a part of in 2012 with Jon Schindehette when we talked about getting serious in regards to making art and having a career in the gaming industry. At some point we should host a follow up panel and reflect of what we talked about then and where our careers have progressed.

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Pensacon 2019 Recap

Another amazing Pensacon has come and gone. I can not say enough good things about the convention, those that run it, work it, and attend it. Three days of super fun times and really great people. This year was by far my best Pensacon to date, both financially and as a convention. The area of Pensacola that surrounds the Bay Center is getting to feel familiar, and we are taking part in a lot more events outside of the convention. Our con family is expanding, and the fun level has significantly increased. Pensacon 2020 has been announced, and I can not wait to return!

A HUGE thanks goes out to Mike Ensley, Steve Wise, and all of the AMAZING staff and volunteers for bringing me back and making it such a wonderful experience. And thanks to all those that stopped by my table to talk about art, monsters, and more. You are all responsible for making my time at Pensacon so much fun and memorable!

Here are some images and thoughts from Pensacon 2019...

Once again it somehow all fit into my car.

 Getting ready for set up.

The vendors are hard at work getting everything ready.

My Pensacon 2019 booth set up. I tried something different this time around, I left my original paintings at home and brought canvas prints of my most popular paintings. It was more successful than expected!

My favorite drawing from the Thursday night drink and draw. Drawings will be auctioned off for charity.

The vendor floor is ready for the first day of Pensacon!

My con neighbor is Sam Flegal! This is the first time we have ever been set up side by side, and it was a great time. We are both ready for the first day of Pensacon!

I started the first day with a panel on working on game art, usage, and collecting. It was a great panel, and I think we actually talked about relevant topics and answered questions.

On the panel was me, Brain Stillman, Sam Flegal, and Seth Polansky. I would do another panel with these guys in a second.

These are the droids I am looking for.

Pictures will never do it justice, the vendor floor was packed all weekend. On Saturday there was little to no room to move down there.

The top highlight of the Pensacon for me was meeting Alan Harris. He was the actor that performed Bossk, who is the character that most directly influenced my journey as an artist. I got a couple figures signed. I had an absolutely lovely conversation with him, and he told me about his time on set performing Bossk. Good times. I mostly kept my cool...

Here is a set of four Festering Mummy artist proofs with one big sketch on the back. RAWR!

Speaking of artist proofs with sketches, here are some more.

And, here are even more. I forgot to get images of them all. Artist proofs were huge for me this year at Pensacon.

The screening of the Eye of the Beholder was GREAT. There was a good turn out, and the Q&A afterward was fun and informative. There were many great questions about making art for D&D and playing D&D.

Another highlight of Pensacon 2019 was seeing the Cybertronic Spree play on Saturday night.

The show was beyond AMAZING and if you ever have a chance to see them perform you must go.

With the help of Dear Wife, I was able to get to the front of the stage, and there was much rocking out.

By Sunday I was running low on energy, as with most cons, but there was still a lot of fun, excitement, and attendees to meet.

I was able to finally cross paths with Jeffery Combs at Pensacon. He and I both worked on All Souls Day fifteen years ago, but I never had a chance to talk to him on set. I adore his Star Trek work, and it was great to finally have a moment to talk. I, of course, got my DVD of All Souls Day signed.

Sunday was busier than expected, and I caught a second wind to see Pensacon over the finish line.

Beginning last year, we instituted a recovery and rest day after Pensacon on Pensacola Beach.

After three (four with set up) on the convention, it is good to have some downtime with friends to rest and ease out of the convention experience.

There are worse ways to end a convention. Thank you Pensacon! It is, as always, a WONDERFUL time!

Be sure to check out the Pensacon website to see who will be coming in 2020 and to follow them on social media to get the newest announcements. I hope to see you all there next year!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog, see you back here on Monday! Until then...

Pensacon 2018 Recap

Another amazing Pensacon has come and gone. I can not say enough good things about the convention, those that run and work it, and the attendees. Three days of super fun times and really great people. Penscon 2018 outdid itself with everything feeling more fun, more busy, and more exciting. We were able to explore a bit further from the convention center this year and take in a bit more of what Pensacola had to offer. Pensacola has a lot of tasty food and drink to offer! We are getting to know more regular guests and friends from outside Pensacon are starting to take part in the con as well which makes for even more fun. Pensacon 2019 is already lining up to be even better with already a stellar group of guests lined up. I hope I once again find myself returning to Pensacon as a guest, I would hate to miss out on all the fun!

A HUGE thanks goes out to Mike Ensley for having me out and to all the AMAZING staff and volunteers at Pensacon 2018. Thank you so much for making my time at the con so much fun and very very memorable!

Here are some images and thoughts from Penascon 2018...

Once again, somehow all our stuff barely fit into the car. Thankfully it was easier to get everything back in after the con, since there was less of it!

The mighty Face of Boe welcomes you at the convention hotel. I did not see it in use, it does have beer taps running along the sides behind the head.

The vendor floor was a buzz of activity Thursday afternoon. Pensacon's set up is different from any other convention that I have done and I love it for just that. Though Pensacon has long since outgrown its venue.

A look around from my view point for the next three days. This year I was against the wall and faced out into the ring. It was nice having something besides a wall to stare at!

My booth came together quickly and allowed for plenty of down time and fun time before things began Friday afternoon. I always feel my setup looks a little better at Pensacon.

The view from our hotel room this year. Yes, those are lines of people already forming on Thursday.

John Barrowman made a dramatic arrival at the hotel Thursday night! There were some quick photo opportunities and he vanished as quickly as he appeared.

The vendor floor Friday morning before the doors open. All set up and ready to go!

My copy of GI Joe #2 that I got signed by the amazing Larry Hama!

K-9 was hanging out at the hotel waiting for the Doctor to return.

Screen used props on display at the Fish House. They had three different themed sections, a Harry Potter area, a Star Trek area, and a Star Wars area. Super fun times were had by many here over the weekend.

Han had one too many Warp Core Breaches to drink at the Fish House.

The lines were already super long by the time I arrived at the convention center on Saturday morning. Two ramps leading up to the entrances were already full and the lines continued into the parking lot.

The calm before the storm...

Saturday was crazy busy and super packed with people!

It was hard to move around on Saturday, but that did not hold people back from checking everything out and picking up one art from their favorite artists.

Sketchbook sketch on Saturday of a Gorax. RAWR!

A Cyberman stopped by the booth to make friends.

Finally got down to the vendor floor on Sunday before the door opened. Got to see all the neat things for sale and think about a different time when there was more time for video games and less time for art.

The 501st was once again in attendance and had a great display.

R2 and Chopper were hanging out and playing nice... this time...

A couple images (cut together) of the special effects panel I was a part of on Sunday. I took part in two panels this year at Pensacon. Both were SUPER fun! It felt like there were a lot more people in attendance, the moderators did an AMAZING job in both, and the other folks on the panels were super fun and we all had a great time talking about our craft and experiences. Can not ask for more. If you are attending Pensacon and not going to the panels, you are missing out!

I took home this piece by Roland Paris finally. I have had my eye on it for a couple years now and it is really great to finally have a page he inked.

Some of the Empire's finest stopped by the booth on Sunday.

BT-1 was hanging out helping with security just hoping for someone to step out of line.

Those around me were back to pack up much quicker than I, but it allowed me a bit more room to organize and get everything packed up right.

Tear down goes so much quicker than set up... but it is a lot more sad since it is now all over.

We unexpectedly stayed a extra day in Pensacola and went out to the beach to spend the night and hang out with friends. A well made decision!

The very large and very weird (from this angle) Pensacola Beach water tower.

Be sure to check out the Pensacon website to see who will be coming in 2019 and to follow them on social media to get the newest announcements. I hope to see you all there next year!

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...
