AEGEAN STRIKE - Part One

On the weekend of Friday 16th September to Sunday 18th September the Cold War Commanders gathered at the home of the Deeside Defenders Wargames Club in Broughton to play out another of our massive Cold War Commander (CWC) games.

Now into its fifth year the game was set in 1985 and focused on a Soviet attack in the Aegean and along the Black Sea coast. Forces for Aegean Strike included Russian, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Turkish and US. More on some of the forces involved in future posts.

Unfortunately our numbers were down on what was originally planned due to illness and we wish Alan and Rodge speedy recoveries and we hope to see you both at future events. Also a couple of late withdrawals meant a bit of player shuffling and table reorganisation from the original four table layout to a two table layout. Thanks to Andy C and Mark J for swapping sides after such short notice.

Table One (12' x 6') was set on the Black Sea coast with Warsaw Pact forces commanded by Nick G and Keith T where assaulting the beaches defended by a mixed force of Turkish and Portuguese commanded by Andy T and Ian S respectively.

Table Two (20' x 6') was split into 3 distinct areas to reflect elements of the original four table layout each with a terrain obstacle stopping forces travelling from one section to another section. First up was a clash between Warsaw Pact forces commanded by Mark J and Greek forces commanded by Mark F set near the Greek border. This was a return match as Mark J's Warsaw Pact forces had come up against Mark F's Dutch at the 2016 event. The central area of Table Two set near the Aegean coast saw a mixed NATO force of Italians commanded by Neil M and Spanish Marines commanded by Richard C trying to break out of a small bridgehead against superior Warsaw Pact forces in the shape of Steve B's Russians and Simon W's superb Bulgarians. Simon had done some superb little conversions and created BMP-23's and BMP-30's.

The final table section featured an area of Thrace and saw a strong Warsaw Pact force commanded by Andy C assisted by Mike Y from the Deeside Defenders come into contact with a Spanish force commanded by Mike A.

The line of industrial buildings marked the boundary of the table section

Great buildings by Timecast painted by Alan M who unfortunately couldn't make it as he is recovering from a stroke. Everyone at the Cold War Commanders wish him a speedy recovery and we all hope to see him back asap

So the scene was set for a great couple of days gaming. In Part Two I will detail some of the more unusual units that fought in Aegean Strike. Thanks for looking :-)

JOY OF SIX - Part One

I haven't posted much on here recently mainly due to work commitments. Today I headed off to Sheffield to join five other Cold War Commanders, Richard Crawley, Steve Graham, Andy Canham, Ian Shaw and Jamie Crawley to put on our first ever Demonstration Game at the Joy of Six show held at the Heartspace, Sheffield Hallam University. Wasn't sure what to expect as this was the first time I had attended this show. So after a very wet drive over the Peak District I arrived at the venue nice and early and was greeted by the guys from Wargames Emporium who were most helpful in directing me in where I needed to go. Thanks Chaps! After a bit of table rearranging, I was ready for the arrival of the rest of the chaps to set up before the doors opened at 10.00am.

Heartspace, Sheffield Hallam University

Once we had all arrived we got busy setting up the Battle of Bjerkvik 1985, a continuation of our 2013 Megagame, Arctic Strike.

Busy setting up

Richard, Jamie and Steve setting up

Scenario Outline
Bjerkvik, August 1985

Warsaw Pact airborne and amphibious forces have landed on the coast of Herjangsfjord north of Narvik. They have captured the town of Bjerkvik and the outlying villages of Medby and Haugen. They now seek to expand their bridgehead north through Dalberg and east along the shore of Lake Hartvik towards the Swedish border.

At the southern end of the bridgehead, Soviet DVD troops are coming under pressure from NATO troops attacking up the road from Narvik. In addition, a US Marine force, isolated by the original landings, launches a desperate local counter-attack.

Table layout nearly complete just a few more trees.

Richard Crawleys superb scratchbuilt Bjerkvik village

Dalberg, soon to be the scene of heavy fighting

The table nearly finished.

So as soon as the table was finished and Andy and Ian had arrived we were ready to deploy just in time to grab a well deserved bacon bap and a cup of coffee before the doors opened to the public.

That ship again!

Got a few more photos that I will post tomorrow.

Big thank you to Richard, Steve, Andy, Ian and Jamie for today and also to the guys from Baccus and Wargames Emporium for there organisation and support of this event. We shall definitely be back again next year! Exciting times ahead for 6mm gaming and the Cold War Commanders. Andy and Ian at H&R have some really exciting plans for future releases. Timecast, Leven and Total Battle are producing some superb new buildings and new companies like Perfect 6 are producing some excellent additions to make our troops, vehicles and tables look even better.

As always thanks for looking....

Project 12322 - ZUBR Class LCAC - PART TWO

The Zubr has arrived! Not much done to it yet but I have taken a few photos.

The complete kit, the hull and air cushion sections are clean, just some of the smaller pieces need cleaning up before construction can commence.

Size comparison with a Scotia AIST (Rear) and a Scotia Lebed (Front)

Another view showing the difference in size. Forgot to put a 1/300th tank in the photo for comparison will take another photo later.
