50 Facts About Me

My dd Rachel from Young Homemakers tagged me again. We are supposed to come up with 50 things about ourselves. Some of the things you might already know about me, but hopefully you will learn some new ones too! =;)

Here are the rules: Try to come up with 50 facts about yourself. If you're tagged you must try to do it! Its o.k. if you don't make it all the way to 50. You may use things from previous tags. Just have fun!

1. I don't eat eggs by themselves like scrambled eggs, poached eggs, egg salad or omelets but I will eat them in and on things like french toast, pancakes, meatloaf, etc.

2. I love to scrapbook.

3. I love to read.

4. I love to play board games.

5. I love everything about studying History - I love planning our units, reading Historical Fiction to the boys, seeing God's hand directing all of History.

6. I love all things Little House on the Prairie. I have the books in hard back and paper back, the Unit Study - Prairie Primer - here is a link to Amazon in case you want to check it out. I have many books about her life too, like:

Laura Ingalls Wilder Country: The People and Places in Laura Ingalls Wilder life and books. by William Anderson
The Little House Cookbook by Barbara M. Walker
Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography (Little House) by William Anderson

16. I never knew either of my grandfathers, they died before I was old enough to even remember them and it was the same with my kids (my dh's father died before we got married) ... I really feel like we all missed out on that one... granpa's, papaw's, pop pop's would have been fun to have. I will blog more about that some day soon. I got my BS in Elementary Education.

In the mean time check these out if you want.

25. I also minored in Geology.

26. In 1981 I took a "field trip" to Hawaii with my Geology class at college... Trip of a Lifetime!!!

27. I place a lot of blame and guilt on myself, even for things that are not my fault.

28. My dh and I dated for 13 days, then he asked me to marry him and I said yes... see this post: About Me and My Dear Hubbie and our Dating Days

29. I do not recommend #28 to my dd's... LOL dating for less that two weeks and then getting engaged that is... actually I don't recommend dating at all. I recommend Courtship.

30. My favorite flower is Hyacinth, I guess that should be favorite plant, for cut flowers I like roses.

31. I am a people person. I am an Extrovert. I talk to people everywhere, even in line at a store. LOL

32. Many times I struggle with caring to much what others think about me ... yes, I struggle with selfishness.

34. My favorite Ice Cream Flavor is Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup.

35. My favorite Ice Cream store is Cold Stone Creamery.

36. I was Vice President of our Homeschool Support Group for two years 2002-2003 and 2003 - 2004 and in 2004 Rachel graduated from our homeschool... I must have been crazy... I was crazy busy at least. They offered me the Presidency but I am not crazy enough to take that position. My best friend took the position. It was fun, and a lot of work, to do with a friend.

37. I hated History until I got a great professor in College - Dr. Vos. His class made me love History for the first time.

38. I was the Elementary School Book Librarian for two years in College, we had a separate small library only for Elem. Ed. Students, I organized the books, re-shelved them, checked the books out for students, set the library hours , I did it all.

39. I love ballet, and opera, classical music concerts and art museums but never get to go. My love for them started in college. We were all required to take a Fine Arts course and since we were so close to N.Y. city, only 20-30 min. depending on traffic, we were afforded the opportunity to see all kinds of performances. We had to choose 10 different kinds of genre to explore. I got to see the Opera Carmen in NYC. I also saw a ballet, but I don't remember which one. Also my friend Becky from High School and her parents used to go to free concerts and in Philadelphia at the
The Mann Center for the Performing Arts. It is the only outdoor cultural arts venue in the Philadelphia region and one of the largest of its kind in the nation. We sat way, way, way back from the stage, sitting on a hill outside, and you needed binoculars to see the stage at all but the sound was GREAT.

40.
I saw Baryshnikov in a ballet at the Mann Center one year too. That was a thrill.

41. I love to cross stitch.

42. I have been homeschooling for 18 years since fall 1991. I have 6 years to go... then I hope to start helping with grandchildren... I hope I at least have a grandchild by then... I will not have a school age grandchild by then because that would mean my dd would have to be pregnant now and she is not even courting yet... LOL

43. I taught First and Second Grade for 1 year in a Christian School in Salisbury, Md. That is the church I was attending when I met, fell in love with and married my dh.

44. Since my dh was divorced.. long story... not going their now... neither the Pastor of the church we were going to at the time nor the Pastor of the church I grew up in would marry us. Nor could we use those church buildings sooooo... we got married by my High School Science Teacher who also had a Bible degree and was qualified by the state to preform marriages. Since we could not use the churches we decided to get married outside in the yard next to my sisters house. The majority of the yard actually belonged to an Odd Fellows Lodge that was using an old church as it's meeting place, and we got permission to use part of their lawn which is attached to my sisters lawn. I will post pictures and more details about that closer to our 25 anniversary on July 14 of this year. I was 23 yrs. old when we got married.

45. I try to read at least one new homeschool book each summer and reread several older ones.

46. I always have multiple books I am reading. To the boys, to my dh, to the family as a whole, for History, and for personal reading I usually have at least 3 books I am reading for personal reading: a fiction (or 2 or 3), a homeschool book, and a marriage or parenting book. See my Shelfari on the sidebar for my current reads.

47. My favorite fruit is Pineapple and second is Clementine Oranges.

48. Favorite desserts: Cheese Cake, my husband's Heath Cake, my dd's cakes, cookies of all kinds, Crispy Cream Donuts (there is not one near us any more so Dunkin Donuts is second best), Entenmann's Desserts ( we have a thrift store near us - desserts for $1 and $1.50 a box... dangerous!!!) Ice Cream (see #34 and 35).

49. Favorite Homeschool/Book resources, not in any particular order except the first four are tops then the rest are the about the same amount of favoriteness (a new word???):

Bethlehem Books - Great Historical Fiction
Vision Forum - Great History Resources and lots of hands on stuff for boys (boys stuff is harder to find) and girls
Lamplighter Publishing- Great Fiction and Historical Fiction
Barb Shelton's site - Homeschool Oasis - she has the best book for planning your child's High School Homeschool Adventure - Senior High - A Home-Designed Form+U+La and this is the part of the website with lots of High School Helps scan down the High School Helps page to find the Home-Designed Form+U+La book.

Mantle Ministries - Home of Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler - History... definitely History
Geography Matters - ummm Geography maybe??? LOL
Farm Country General Store - sounds like a good place to get penny candy doesn't it??? but they have all kinds of homeschool resources
R.O.C.K. Solid -
they have all kinds of homeschool resources

50. I am the "Link Queen" as you can see from numerous link in the above post. I cannot do a post without at least one link. I love to search for and share great homeschool links/resources with local and online friends. I hope some of these help someone out there...

51. I LOVE comments so leave me one!!!

I am on a roll now and may not stop... LOL

52. I Love Lapbooking and Notebooking and Copywork... I started my own copywork binder to keep important quotes in.

53. My favorite subject in school was math... and science is it ok to have two. In Middle School I like Home-Ec we had a classroom with ovens and counters and sinks for cooking then we did sewing, I made a pair of pants and by the time I got them done they did not fit me...LOL and they were purple!!! ROFLOL In High School my favorite subject was Science, specifically Geology and Paleontology.

54. I wore a lot of polyester knit dresses and outfits when I was young becuase my aunt worked at a store that sole polyester knits. I once even had a polyester knit dress that was purple with skottie dogs on it. I will have to see if I can dig up that picture for the next {Sincerely 'Fro Me To You} can you imagine wearing that??? if you grew up in the 60's and early 70's you can!!!

Ok.. I am done.. not because I cannot think of anything else to write.. because if I sit here long enough I can.. but because I started this last at 7:00 this morning and it is now 2:15. I have done other things inbetween like lunch and check on the boys doing school but it is time to move on.

17. A verb: Discover

Since you may or may not be familiar with the song in answer #16 here are the words
  1. Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
    • Refrain:
Oh, yes, He cares, I know He cares,
      His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
      I know my Savior cares.
  2. Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?
  3. Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed
    To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief there is no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long?
  4. Does Jesus care when I’ve said “goodbye”
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks—
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?
and here is a link if you want to hear the song Does Jesus Care

My Memories from 2008

My DD Jessica tagged me but probably only because she posted first so check out both Rachel and Jessica's posts here The Young Homemaker

The rules:
1. Fill in your memories of 2008
2. Link my blog to yours
3. Tag others and comment on their blogs so they know they've been tagged

My memories from 2008

A good book I read

Do I have to pick just one??? LOL
I narrowed it down to just two...
Twice Freed by Patricia St. John - a story about Philemon and Onesimus from the Bible
and
Men of Iron by Howard Pyle - a good book full of morals, about a boy who becomes a knight and wins back the honor of his father.
A Review from Amazon
that sums it up better than I could. "Master storyteller Howard Pyle at his best, incorporating fascinating historical information about life in a medieval castle, knighthood, and chivalry into the fast-moving and entertaining story of young Myles Falworth's fight to restore his family's rights and good name. This classic story remains a great favorite not only among young readers but also among educators because of the author's effortless way of teaching great virtues such as courage, loyalty, steadfastness, and generosity."

A great film/movie I watched
Fireproof

A new place I visited

The only place new I have been to in the past year that I know of, like my dd Rachel, is a new library by our house, Garfield Library.

An inspiring verse or quote I read
Charlotte Mason Companion Chapter 9 The Happiness of Habit"
"New thoughts and new actions are not done out of habit. They are in formation. We must give them lots of attention and care if we wish them to become habits" pg 69
""...working daily to create habits - whether intellectual habits of ones of etiquette - depended on the energy of the students as much as the teacher. ... children need a regular sprinkling (or sparking) of inspiring ideas of righteousness to evoke their cooperation." pg 70
"In our rising up, our sitting down, and in any other wayside moments of the day. Children pick up knowledge from our lips, our attitudes, our examples - not just during those few sacred scheduled hours." pg 70

A discovery I made

This is a hard one... hmmmm... mold growing in the bathroom, mold growing in the refrigerator, mold growing in the box of potatoes in the Laundry/Storage room. Remember all these discoveries were over the course of a year.... LOL don't think I never clean my house... LOL does that count???

A new skill I acquired

Blogging and I love it - memes, posts, links, slide shows, pictures, and Shelfari among other things

A lesson I learned

That God is there when the trial seems endless. In the beginning of 2008 we were 3 1/2 years into our trial from my husbands injured back... I never thought it would last as long as it did, and thanks to the economy and the fact that his pay is 1/2 what it was before his work injury we are still struggling.

A moment I will always remember
When I found my blog link on the first page of a Google search (actually my ds found if first) ... it was my first post about doing our Olympic Lapbooks!! I was so excited... I was the third link on the first page. I thought I was really something that day... of course you had to be searching for the right thing to find that page... LOL

Who do I tag??? anyone that wants to do this... it was pretty fun... and challenging... just leave me a comment so I can check out your post.

Meme - I've been tagged

I have been tagged for this Meme from my friend at http://daybydayinourworld.blogspot.com/

These are the rules: Pass this on to 5 blogging friends. Open the closest book to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56. Write the 5th sentence, as well as two to five sentences following that.

Since I am sitting at my computer desk I have numerous books available and at equal distance to my reach. These include: Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+La, All Through the Ages, The Complete Home Learning Sourcebook, A BUNCH of Homeschool Magazines, Homeschooling at the Speed of Light, Books Children Love, Little House in the Big Woods, Building Blocks for a Building Marriage, and Inspirational Christmas Crafts.

But the book I choose to do my tagging on. Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens by Paul David Tripp. Page 56 the 5th sentence says " The Bible presents God as someone who is near and active in our lives." The sentences follow with," The psalmist says that he is an "an ever-present help in trouble"(Ps. 46:1). There is no divine 911 telephone line because God is already here and already active. There is never a moment in which God is absent or inactive. There is never a situation, location, or relationship that he does not rule."

I am tagging:
Rachel and Jessica (my dd's) at Young Homemakers
Chasity at Seasons of a Godly Woman

Leslie at Journey to Simplicity
Michele at Ramblings
Heidi Jo at Bahama Homeschooler
