Pod Temida, Poland

Pod Temida offers a step back in time to communist-era Poland - this is one of Krakow's enduring 'milk bars,' which once served as popular public cafeterias that offered cheap but nourishing fare. Expect authentic, no-nonsense Polish grub, like steamed potato dumplings and buckwheat groats in hearty, working-class portions, on platters that cost barely RM10 each.

Barbakan, Warsaw, Poland

Time-honoured recipes seize centre stage at Barbakan: Polish-style steak tartare, zurek soup with sausage and hard-boiled eggs in a sour rye bread bowl, as well as Warsaw's omnipresent rustic staple of pierogi dumplings stuffed with minced pork and crowned with crackling, washed down with hot wine.

Busy Krakowiaks flock for lunch to self-service eateries like the nearly 120-year-old Polakowski, a purveyor of familiar Polish staples such as beetroot soup with sour cream, hard-boiled eggs and potatoes, and the city's speciality of breaded pork chop fried on lard.
